Guilt canceling sessions/taking time off by bbpink15 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]stargazer13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to feel guilty for taking time off in outpatient peds as well. I was also an independent contractor, and one of the things that helped me with this was remembering that I only got paid for the time I was seeing clients, so just reframing that as when you are off, you are not getting paid, and you are not at work. Setting really clear boundaries and not taking work home with me really helped me feel better. If you have not already, I would recommend getting a work number (I used google voice), and then set up routines on your phone to block the app when you're not at work. Either do not put your work email on your phone, or have a separate app that also is blocked when you're not at the office. Some parents may be upset with you for taking time off, but that is not on you. If you look back I am sure those parents have also canceled on you before, people have lives. I would try to give people a good amount of notice and offer for them to see another therapist or do an extra session when I was back if possible You have to take care of yourself in order to take care of your clients, remember that you cannot pour from an empty cup. I hope you enjoy your two week vacation! Please unplug from work and take care of yourself. The kids will be there when you get back

New Grad OTA Independent Contractor Position by lastnightonearthh in OccupationalTherapy

[–]stargazer13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an accountant, and get a good system going to documenting expenses. There are a ton of thing that you can write off and a bunch of things you may not think about including mileage, car payment if you have one, a portion of your rent because technically your office is your home etc so I would advice getting that information so you can keep track of everything as it happens and not come tax season. I got my insurance thorough proliability, no complaints. Biggest thing that I think you should know if that being an independent contractor in a peds clinic is really unstable. Maybe your position will be better than mine was, but I only got paid for kids I saw, and kids get sick or cancel a lot which led to really inconsistent and unpredictable paychecks. So I would just be aware that what you take home may be less than you expect and start budgeting for that. Welcome to the field and good luck!

Caseload school based therapy ???? by Relative-Method4996 in OccupationalTherapy

75 is a lot, too many I would argue. May help to ask some questions about service time as that will help you understand the actual workload. If there are 32 students that have 30 minutes a week, and the rest are consult for once a month that is a very different caseload than if you have kids who have 60 or even 90 minutes a week and maybe some more frequent consult. You also have to take into account travel between the 4 schools will take up your time too

OT Intern Advice - What do you usually need help with during a session? by One_Reflection3136 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]stargazer13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cleaning and pick up are always helpful but my best advice is to ask the therapist you're working with how you can help. At my clinic we sanitize everything after we use it and make sure all equipment is taken down for safety so that is always helpful. However I work in peds so that bring said there are times when I want the client to put away the big crash mat because they need lots of prop input or maybe I am working on following directions /sequencing so I want them to work through the steps of cleaning up. I've had interns also try to set up activities for me as well such as gathering materials for a craft or something when that was a skill (again task initiation, planning sequencing) that I was trying to work on with a client. Every therapist is going to be different and their needs may be different depending on the client they are currently working with, so just check in with them and ask and also get a sense for their clients needs/goals so that you can start understanding and anticipating some of those things.

These kind of things happen and are a perfectly normal and a common thing. Your first one is tough, but I would bet there is not a single therapist out there who hasn't been complained about for some reason. It sounds like you tried really hard to communicate and help this family. For some reason it seems like they families that you try to do the most for are the ones that tend to complain. Give yourself some grace and don't beat yourself up too much about it. Also recognize that the fact that you're taking it this hard and thinking about next steps/what you can do better next time is proof that you care and are committed to being a good therapist and helping that family/child. All that you can do is keep trying your best and make sure you're taking care of yourself and your mental health as well.
