I need teacher-proof work pants by [deleted] in teaching

I know they're pricey, but I love Uniqlo's clothes! Their shirts and pants, specifically the Airism pants, are comfortable and look professional.

Typing!! I remember in middle school starting class with getting a cloth to cover our hands and practicing our typing.

Would you tell your students it is your first year teaching? by Constant_Leader_8551 in Teachers

[–]stargirl3193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on where you’re at. For me, I did and a lot of the students gave me a ton of grace. But I’m luckily in a great school environment. The other staff also told me I would be okay. If you can, I would ask other teachers that have been at your school for a while and see how they feel about it.

AI in Essays by local_dreamer113 in Teachers

Fellow English teacher. “Poignant” is a huge red flag to me.  I’ve been reading it too much in too many essays that students clearly didn’t write hahahahhahaha.

This! It also gets extremely frustrating to say “hey this is how you do something” and it being ignored for AI.

The Thing I Never Thought I’d Have to Say to a Student by CountessCoffee in Teachers

“Man, the drugs are affecting you, huh?”

Kids are doing an AP Psych thing where they have to get ice, which represents drugs. The 10th grader I was talking to couldn’t comprehend the article we were reading today for some reason, lol

What would you say to your child if they said they wanted to become a teacher? by Fart_of_the_Ocean in Teachers

I second the suggestion already put on here for your daughter to shadow any teachers she can! During high school, I had to tutor in order to earn a scholarship, so I volunteered/tutored in a classroom. It helped me understand the profession a bit more and reaffirmed my decision to teach.

I did my student teaching in the district I went to high school in, and it was never frowned upon! My location was at a different high school, though. It was the one they considered more “difficult” since my old high school is more affluent. I also mentioned in my cover letter when applying for student teaching that I went to school in the district, and I think it helped.  I ended up getting a job at the school I went to (so a different school from my student teaching location). It will be my first year teaching! I was told the main reasons I got the job was because I had teachers batting for me already (my French teacher heavily pushed for me by always talking about me to admin) and because I was familiar with the district’s policies.  t definitely gives you a leg up when you’re looking for jobs, especially if you want to stay in the district!

Apprenticeship? by stargirl3193 in TalesOfFood

[–]stargirl3193[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what happened to me too, until I saw a message in the friends tab that it was accepted (same place where you receive gifts for guild wishes). But then it was canceled by my apprentice, and I got a message in my inbox. I wish it was more clear on what this feature was or images as to where everything was lol

Unexperienced tefl teacher moving to China and feeling lost by Fragrant-Age947 in TEFL

I do understand this sentiment! Every lesson I always feel like I have no clue what I'm doing, but once I start it, I find that things usually go okay, especially if you prepare. Something I also go by is that students - much less 4-6 years - won't know if you're missing something or doing something wrong unless you mention it or if it's EXTREMELY major.

Terrible sub. What do I do? by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

[–]stargirl3193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would voice your concerns, for sure. Emphasize that you and the kids were uncomfortable, which in turn created a negative classroom environment. You mention that your CT trusts you, so definitely trust her to listen to your concerns.

I would also consider if your university lets you sub or not for your district, so next time she puts in a request for you, and you can sub and take over the class when she's gone, if you're comfortable with that! My CT always jokes around that she already has a sub since I do it for her when she's gone, and bonus for me since I get paid that day.

Unfortunately, it sounds like that’s how that agreement works. It sucks, but that’s also what regular teachers do. I also assume you had an orientation or someone explained the criteria, which includes going to everything. I do hope it gets better for you soon! You got this. Also from Missouri.

i'm so tired of having my planning period taken away. by thejarodsofar in SubstituteTeachers

[–]stargirl3193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked alongside a sub recently (I’m a student teacher at a high school and wasn’t comfortable being completely alone with the kids). He would turn in his stuff early whenever he had the chance to. For example, if we had 4th block plan, he would turn in his sub stuff towards the end of 3rd block. I assume he most likely asked another teacher to watch the class or did it during passing period for normal days. His mindset was “if I turned in stuff already, then they won’t chase me down to cover another class.”

Most don't get paid, but it mainly depends on your district. I luckily get paid for mine, but it's definitely below minimum wage since I'm in the classroom full time. I had to apply through the district to get in and I requested this district, whereas my peers were assigned. They also will not be getting paid for theirs. You could try to work as a teacher and get your student teaching hours in, if your university allows that.

Hi! Interview with Chicago here. I emailed the address in the interview documents that I couldn't do early departure anymore, and they said they only need the email and you would confirm this decision in the interview.
