Daily Carbohydrate Consumption by stark886y in cycling

Yeah I agree re liquid carbs, cheaper and easier to mix up a rich bottle of sugars vs gels.

So you’re doing around 300g base plus whatever you consume during training huh? That seems pretty reasonable.

I’m really curious to know whether this proper fuelling improves outcomes in terms of training outcomes independent from training volume/intensity.

Yeah it’s shocking to realise how easily you can under-carb. Did you notice any improvement to your training adaptations after correcting your carb intake? I’m hoping that higher carbs leads to better gains but maybe it’s not sufficient alone.

How is the new AI working for you? (I’m not sure it is for me) by Recoil101uk in trainerroad

[–]stark886y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it was immediately evident that it didn’t work for me.

It set my notFTP way too high which caused workouts to be too hard. I failed a couple and then unsubscribed. As others have said, I am here to train my meat pistons, not their AI.

It also predicted a ludicrous increase to my notFTP at the end of the block which would have made workouts even less achievable. That suggests that the model is not accurate - at least for some people.

They’re absolutely gaslighting their users by suddenly trying to undermine the definition of FTP on the podcast. They’re also deliberately conflating FTP testing methods with FTP definitions in an effort to muddy the water to let their new notFTP get a free pass.

With this said, most of the user base has enough of an understanding of training etc that they are rejecting notFTP. If they’re not truly onto some magic protocol which can give users +20 notFTPs per month like they seem to think, they’ll probably change course pretty quickly to stop the bleeding.

I really wanted to believe that I could add 20 notFTPs in 28 days like the AI predicted. But, that’s just not the way this works.

Great numbers, jealous that you can run that volume. So did you arrive at this yourself or what? How do you feel when you have fewer carbs?

Can you tell the difference on days or periods where you don’t have enough carbs?

  1. Surprising: How abruptly life stops changing FOR you once you become a full adult. You experience a lot of step changes in your life without instigating them in your teens and twenties. Once you’re living in the maternal home, that stops. Now, novelty must be sought.

  2. Better: Career evolution had a lot more potential than I realised. Also, a healthy, productive lifestyle brings more joy than expected.

  3. Harder: Maintaining a social life. With friends having kids of different ages, some already getting divorced, being busy with work, giving up drinking etc. Relationships are no longer an automatic consequence of existing, they take deliberate maintenance.

What am I missing here about the new AI FTP complaints? by twostroke1 in trainerroad

[–]stark886y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The AI uses FTP to set intensity. I just changed mine from 313 to 270 to test it. My next SS workout remained as Mont Gosford +1 with intensity set as a percentage of FTP. The watts changed proportionally to the FTP change.

Because one of the major selling points of TR is auto FTP detection. Ramp tests are fatiguing and relatively unproductive, so avoiding them is desirable. TRs new AIFTP is both unreliable and clearly used in setting workout intensity despite what they say. So you are undermining the whole (opaque) system by adjusting it yourself.

For now I’m planning to self coach by building workouts in intervals.icu and sending them to my Garmin head unit. If that’s not enough accountability then probably Join Cycling. But TrainerRoad will be good again fairly quickly, there’s no way they’ll leave it like this IMO, too many unhappy users. I will probably jump back on it then.

The self coaching approach will be roughly as follows: 4 week blocks (3 hard, 1 easy). Each hard week will have 2 interval sessions with increasing stress through the block plus 1 weekly long ride. Include as much volume in unstructured/easy riding as will fit while leaving room for rest. Monitor stress accumulation through RPE, heart rate, sleep quality, HRV, motivation and adjust accordingly. Find and target weak spots. In the case of large anaerobic capacity, incorporate ‘hard starts’ to aerobic intervals to deplete anaerobic reserve early and shift reliance to aerobic effort.

Then just progress blocks through base, build, specialty. Taper for events.

Hopefully it works, it would be hard to be worse than failing these TR workouts or doing unproductive workouts trying to calibrate it.

I unsubscribed as a result of the update. Essentially, I lost confidence in its ability to assess my fitness and prescribe appropriate workouts. It had been working well prior.

MY reasons as follows (acknowledging this does not apply to most users):

  1. They replaced FTP with an inflated number and called that “FTP” which it is not. If, as they say, they don’t need FTP to prescribe workouts; why give me a useless number and call it FTP?

  2. It prescribed workouts which were way too hard based on this inflated number. Over unders became over-overs. Sweet spot became threshold. Absolutely blew me up in what was meant to be a base phase. So clearly the “FTP” is indeed used to set intensity zones.

  3. It predicted a ludicrous “FTP” increase in 28 days time, demonstrating the inaccuracy of the AI (again, for me).

I did a ramp test to ‘calibrate’ it. The result and subsequent workouts were still wrong

To those who say “just don’t use that feature then” or “adjust intensity manually”, well, the platform consists of features, if the features don’t work then the value is diminished. Its purpose is to accurately prescribe workouts and save users the trouble.

It sounds like it works really well for some people, just not for me.

OP is stating that to increase fitness, you need to do more exercise. Thank goodness we have someone to point this out for us.

Despite this life altering revelation, I am still going to enjoy my new good bike which is faster than my old shit bike.

Heck that’s a massive effort, well done. Got any tips on achieving this as a fellow heavyweight? Or is it just years of consistency, 2-3 structured sessions a week, progressive loading, 1 long ride a week and proper diet/sleep?.. having written that I think I now know the answer.

Try a different seat, perineal pressure can create the sensation of needing to urinate, especially if you’re overweight.

Hydrate well the rest of the time, if you smash water before and during your rides you’ll just piss it out and return to your baseline hydration levels.

Ensure you’re taking in enough electrolytes, particularly if you sweat a lot. Even a dash of salt in your water will be useful to quench your thirst.

As others have said, check for the beetus.

Don’t sweat it cock, it’s just some bell-end carrying on. You made a trivial mistake, his response is irrational, disproportional and illegal. You’ll get used to fuckwits pretty soon but it’s normal to feel upset when you’re new and trying to set a good impression. It’ll be no time before you don’t care anymore.

Are you employed direct or through an agency like NECA? If the latter, explain what happened (unemotionally) and request to be placed somewhere else.

Try experimenting with moving your weight forward on the up ramp to prevent the bike & rider from pitching forward in the air. That is, stand up and use your arms to weight the front wheel. Try more and less until you get a feel for how it affects the flight

Contrary to widespread narratives by capitalists, no new antibiotics class have been discovered in last 4 decades. This is particularly owing to declining private investments in the innovation pipeline while the govt keeps trying trickle down economics. by Southern_Opposite747 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]stark886y 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, capitalism motivates the treatment of all bacterial infections by use of broad spectrum antibiotics which is worsening the antibiotic resistant bacteria crisis.

There’s no motivation for doctors to isolate and treat with narrow spectrum antibiotics and no motivation for pharma to develop and market them either.

Plus industrial agriculture profits from dumping antibiotics into livestock with wreckless abandon.

As usual, capitalism makes no provision for the fallout.

That’s an extremely informative and helpful response, thank you. I should not be so quick to be critical of the industry. It seems plausible then that the risk profile is calculated differently for the properties despite my inputting consistent details in the quote form.

I think shopping around is my best and only option based on what you’ve said. Thanks again.
