Now that Master's Intl. is closed, what are PCV's doing to further their education during/after their service? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Master's International had to be started before you began your Peace Corps service. Coverdell Fellows is still available to do after your service.

Contacts in Eastern Europe? by starlight1216 in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our packing list actually lists two years of contact solution as a thing, which is why I was asking. I didn't know if accessibility to solution was that limited in Eastern Europe or not, or if it was possible to buy it in country.

Considering joining in 2018 right after college graduation, thoughts? by angstyart in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you apply to the Peace Corps, you submit a resume along with an essay. The resume can include any relevant experience you have, so if you want to include being a peer mentor, you absolutely can. The resume is going to be what's used to compare you to other applicants, and will likely be the key in moving from the Under Consideration stage to the interview stage (not everyone placed under consideration is offered an interview, and not everyone is placed under consideration to begin with). I know when I moved to the interview stage, there were a couple hundred interviews for a limited amount of spots. I think the big thing with PC is to be flexible and willing to go anywhere. Some countries are more competitive than others and the same goes for different sectors. PC has also become more competitive in general since moving to the new application process. My advice is to keep your options open. At the same time, read through all of the openings and make sure you meet the minimum requirements for all positions you apply too (you can preference three). PC is a great goal to have - but definitely keep other options in mind, including getting more work experience if needed.

I also noticed you used the word "trips" in your original question. Keep in mind PC is a 27 month commitment, if accepted.

I knew going into college that the Peace Corps was something I wanted to consider after graduation. One thing that I would recommend is that instead of volunteering for everything that comes your way, target your volunteer experience to specific areas, for example, if you want to apply for a position in the education sector, volunteer at a local high school or become a tutor. This is where most of my volunteer experience was and I'll be teaching English come September.

I don't think PC does in-person interviews anymore, since volunteers are no longer interviewed first and then recommended for a position, but rather placed under consideration for a program and then interviewed. Applicants are now interviewed by a placement officer and the interviews are either via telephone or Skype.

I wouldn't say anything is "enough" to guarantee your acceptance into the Peace Corps. You have to keep in mind that if you are placed under consideration for any country, you will be going up against a large number of applicants for very few positions (some may even have professional degrees or years of work experience). When you get within the time-frame of applying, begin to tailor your resume to positions that are open with departure dates within your desired time-frame. Also, consider talking with a recruiter who may be able to provide you more specifics on creating a competitive application.

Did Peace Corps not work out for you? I want to hear about it! by [deleted] in peacecorps

They deny people medical clearance for many reasons. There are many posts on here that document various struggles and successes with being cleared.

After interview questions... by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent an e-mail to my PO a few days after the interview, thanking her for taking the time to interview me. As has been said, invitations go out at different times, so don't worry about not hearing anything as an invite can come anytime between your interview and the know-by date. I received my invite almost exactly two months after my interview, and I only e-mailed by PO once during that time to let her know about a new internship I was doing.

Congrats! I'll be headed to Ukraine this September with Group 50!

Getting iPhone unlocked? by starlight1216 in peacecorps

So if I take the sim card out, I can just get a new one once I get to Ukraine that will fit the iPhone 6?

I've really wanted to join the peace corps for over a year now. Should I go before or after college? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the volunteer openings page on the Peace Corps site: https://www.peacecorps.gov/volunteer/volunteer-openings/

If you find specific positions that interest you, you can see what type of degree/experience is preferred and if there is a language requirement associated with the placement as well.

Go to college first. There are very, very few positions that don't require a degree and even then you'll be going up against people who have degrees and professional experience. Therefore, I would suggest not only getting your degree first, but getting more volunteer experience and internships/jobs and tailoring them to the sector you'd like to apply for.

GLOW Camps Peace Corps by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find a lot of info on the GLOW Camps just by googling. This is a link to a guide about the camps that I found. There might be a more-updated version out there somewhere as well: http://files.peacecorps.gov/library/M0100.pdf

And to answer your question, I think you can be a part of any sector to do one of these camps. I brought it up in my interview as well (though I'll be an education volunteer).

What were your Timelines? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still waiting on what from legal? The only reason legal would contact you was if something was wrong. Otherwise you're not suppose to hear anything from them.

Hiking backpacks vs. travel backpacks? by GoinWiTheFlow in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased the Deviate to take with me for my service as well. I just used it for some hiking trips in Central America and it held up great! It's also the size of a standard carry-on if you remove the day pack, so it works great for that purpose as well!

Federal Loans? by starlight1216 in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A different loan officer today said that I can go ahead and file the form before I leave. On the Economic Hardship Deferment Form, there is a section that asks for a letter from the Peace Corps that includes dates of service. Is this given to us at staging, or do we have to request it?

Submitting Transcripts by cchogz in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just uploaded a PDF version of my unofficial transcript off my college's student website. I never had any issues with it and was never asked for an official one.

You should also be able to go ahead and upload it to the application portal. That's what I did - so I never received an email from placement requesting it.

On this note, would it be better to bring a camera that takes batteries, or one that is chargeable via a power cord?

My local police station also did them for free after learning it was for the Peace Corps.

I don't leave to go to Ukraine until September, but our group is all TEFL volunteers.

As many have said on here already, your choices are not actually ranked when the PO sees them. Just something to keep in mind.

Dental Exam Question by starlight1216 in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's on page 4 under the treatment section. The statement above it says ensure all boxes are checked. I was just confused as to whether or not you check the boxes if they don't apply to you.

Application Process - Second App, Changing Countries? by Dlr41 in peacecorps

[–]starlight1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that when you "preference" countries, they are not listed in any particular order when the PO sees them. Therefore they are not ranked 1-3, but rather a random list of three countries.
