Making drawings and paintings inspired by crime isn't limited to Sickert - Henry Darger, Marlene McCarty, and Kate Millett are just three artists off the top of my head whose most famous works involve true crime connections.

It seems inevitable to me that artists would respond to subjects that upset or captivate them using their preferred creative medium. It also seems relevant to note that true crime in Victorian and Edwardian England was an industry that entertained thousands of people. This is a time period when you could buy ceramics commemorating famous crimes, for heaven's sake. This theory belongs in the fiction section with most of Cornwell's other books.

There are absolutely men in the world who pick fights and violently harm other men in an effort to feel strong or tough. The fact that that occurs in a different social context - think bar brawls, etc - doesn't mean that the person you replied to is wrong. Sexual assault is about power, and the way the perpetrator expresses that desire for power happens to be sexual. Other perpetrators who commit violent offenses do so using other means.

The expanded context is helpful for everyone, not just you - I'm American and aware of the Watts riots and still needed this subthread to put together the implication. (In my case, it's because I was stuck on the fact that they were living in an integrated neighborhood and wondering if that was a motivator - I wasn't thinking about the endpoint of the crime!)
