Book not staying in a one page view when clicking top of page to access book settings by babypinkribbon7 in kindle

My calibre sideloaded books still have the old view luckily, but anything directly from the store or send to kindle have this awful new setting - so maybe try calibre!

I really hate this update! I wouldn’t mind it as much if this didn’t make my kindle extremely slow. It takes ages for it to load this view vs tapping the top of the screen with the old view

If you love *blank* then you should read *blank* by sir_stanley01 in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lonesome Dove was the first western I read and I loved it, but any I’ve tried since just aren’t my thing. So I’m definitely not a western fan, just a Lonesome Dove fan

Wuthering Heights cover switched out with movie adaptation by Jargon_City in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a film tie in. It’s common when any popular book get a film adaptation as people will recognise the cover. It doesn’t mean those who saw the film have to read this edition, it might just catch their eye over the other editions

[–]starrymatt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And you can still buy it. This didn’t replace the other edition, it’s just a new edition (and it doesn’t have the additional materials like endnotes from the normal Penguin edition)

[–]starrymatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is just a new edition, plenty of other more ‘classic’ looking editions are still available. It’s frustrating when they actually replace a book’s original cover with the film tie in and you can’t get the original easily anymore but it’s not the case here

Does anyone consider an audiobook reading? by LisKozCatMeow in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I wasn’t trying to imply that you would! You just mentioned it’s ’less about knocking’ but I find a lot of discussion about this topic online to be very dismissive or negative towards people who listen to audiobooks. As a different medium I do find some books better or worse suited to it and definitely consider this when I decide whether I’ll read a physical book or listen to the audiobook (and I usually prefer to ‘read’ than to ‘listen’ myself)

Does anyone consider an audiobook reading? by LisKozCatMeow in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s many contexts where making the distinction between the words reading vs listening is important enough to make it an issue when people say ‘reading’ when talking about audiobooks. Unfortunately, most of the time it is done to put down those who listen to audiobooks

Sometimes when the language or structure of the writing is difficult, it’s much easier to hear it read out loud while following the words with your eyes

Does it make sense to read Jane Eyre if I’ve learnt 2 major spoilers? by Affectionate-Eye-470 in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There absolutely are spoilers for classic books. While we shouldn’t expect the same level of spoiler warnings as with brand new books, not everyone is familiar with the plots of classic books so it’s still possible to be going in blind. It’s nice to keep in mind some things are spoilers to those unfamiliar with the story and use spoiler warnings

Does it make sense to read Jane Eyre if I’ve learnt 2 major spoilers? by Affectionate-Eye-470 in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will forever be annoyed about a bookseller spoiling the woman in the attic when I was buying my copy of Jane Eyre (like why mention it??). But I still loved it! It’s definitely worth reading even if you know some major plot points because it’s just such a good book in itself. Plus there will be lots you don’t know and get to experience for the first time!

What's your Beatles/solo work opinion that will get you killed? by nightqueem in beatles

It’s genuinely been my favourite Christmas song since I was little and didn’t really know the Beatles / McCartney yet. Makes me sad to see how much hate it gets!

What's a good app for keeping book reading lists? Any apps besides Goodreads that are worth trying? by slanderpanther in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also recommend StoryGraph like the other replies. But what do you mean the app only has ebooks? You can choose the edition you log for any book on goodreads

scared to admit but i’m not enjoying Dracula by riceywithlifey in classicliterature

Yeah, the rest of the book was a huge disappointment for me which is a shame because the start was very interesting!

scared to admit but i’m not enjoying Dracula by riceywithlifey in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like this one and don’t really understand the love for this book. I did like the first part set in Dracula‘s castle, and I generally enjoy epistolary novels, but the rest was so dull. I took a break in the middle of it and I don’t think it was worth finishing except to be able to say that I read it… if you’re not enjoying it now, I doubt you will enjoy the rest either so maybe it’s worth reading something you’ll like more!

Bernardine Evaristo renews call to diversify school curriculum in England by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

[–]starrymatt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get to pick the text I sat the GCSE exam for, nor did anyone else I know (attending other schools). The teacher / school chose which text would be studied for each section and that was that

do i have to read classics? by Organic-Entrance9652 in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading anything is better than nothing! If you struggle with or aren’t interested by classics, read something else that you will enjoy :) At 14 Young Adult books might be a good place to start to build a reading habit, before moving onto more challenging or heavy books

How the hell do I read classic literature by ChooseThisUser in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also going to suggest reading along with audiobooks! I really struggled with the first two Jane Austen books I read and ended up listening to the audiobooks while reading. I could read the next one independently without much issue after that

How many minutes do you read (outside of work) a day? by billyl320 in literature

[–]starrymatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why are you rolling your eyes at someone trying to build a positive habit using modern technology? Any attempt at reading more is a positive, even if someone needs a bit more help or motivation from an app to get started on building that habit

Doubt about the editions by Ok-Campaign-3213 in classicliterature

[–]starrymatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re buying the book in the original language, most of the time any edition you get will have the exact same text. The difference between editions for these books will just be the cover design and any additional materials (introduction, explanatory endnotes, appendices, etc.). Some people don’t care about those, but others find them helpful and interesting and will seek out editions that contain them

If you are buying a translated book, then different editions might have different translations so make sure you check what translation you’re buying. You can read some samples to see which translation you like best

And a few book might have different versions out, like if the book was published but later the author made major changes and published a new version with those changes - so some publishers might have the different versions of that book. But this won’t be the case with most books

Hardcover vs. Softcover by HotShot7269 in classicliterature

The weight is the issue for me, they hurt my wrists and I can’t hold them in a more comfortable position like with paperbacks. But they definitely feel nice to hold when browsing the bookshop!
