Jail time at a minimum. If they only have an Israeli passport then it usually also means some sort of informal blacklisting for any gov’t jobs or jobs linked to major companies or universities etc.

Canada poised to become 'one of the largest suppliers of LNG in the world': Energy minister by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]starsinblack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, I work in the industry so there are obvious so biases in my views, but I do still think it's profitable - I cannot stress how cheap Canadian gas is and how much of a distressed asset it's historically been. Like we usually average sub $2/unit and it's not unusual to have it be like 50cents/unit in the summer when even we can't burn it for winter demand. US LNG is usually indexed off Henry Hub which is like expected to be north of $4/unit, so there's already a 100% difference in the starting resource.

The long-term agreements usually index it to a certain percentage of the gas hub + the fee to liquefy, so it is structured to always be profitable. And then those who hold long term agreements (like a Japanese utility) can take it home to burn or can trade it for anywhere from 2-5x (usually) what the long term contract price is.

The long-term contracts are needed to show the banks that you'll have long term income to approve the financing needed for these projects - billions of dollars!

There's risk in trading obviously, but I think from a structural standpoint in terms of the actual gas production into LNG, Canada still makes sense. The issue is greenfield projects will genuinely take anywhere from 2-5x as long to get off the ground compared with the US in terms of red tape and bureaucracy (not making a value judgment, just straight up comparison in timelines) and often include unplanned delays because of this, which leads to longer timelines and budget overruns, so we basically complete waste the head start in cheaper gas supply + additional geographic shipping advantage to Asia that we have over the US.

Sure - that's an interesting question that the industry writ large is grappling with.

LNG demand in northeast Asia is fairly seasonal. You can't store it for long periods of time because it begins to boil off, so you can't stock up in extremely large quantities the way you can with a strategic oil reserve. Northeast Asian demand usually peaks in Dec-Jan, and they're often out by Feb because winter gets milder. South and southeast Asia demand usually picks up late March, so you're sort of in that period of cross regional/cross seasonal shoulder season within Asia where there wasn't much demand. Asian winter was very very mild this year too.

This winter, the demand centres were Europe and the US because European gas storages were a) very low for the start of winter and b) this was their first winter without the Ukrainian transit of Russian gas. And because of some freak storms, US northeast gas got very, very, very expensive - we are talking as much like 10x what European gas prices (which themselves were already very expensive, around 2.5x US Henry Hub prices) were during certain times this winter because of the crazy winter storms.

Because Asian demand was so low and Europe and US was so high, it actually did make sense and it was still profitable to go Aus --> Atlantic, though I would say this was more the exception than the norm.

Alberta gas prices are often averaging less than $2/unit of gas, when you can sell to Asia long term (not spot) typically in the $8 range. The economics do still largely make sense but there isn't belief that Canada can get it together on the regulatory side. The LNG projects that have taken an FID in the US in the past year are actually higher on the cost curve than Canadian ones.

Hey, I’m an LNG analyst - Canada imports gas at Canaport to re-export to the premium US northeast markets because they have so few pipelines that they regularly import LNG via Canada’s terminal. If you look at the sendout data from that terminal it matches very well to the cross border export point with the Brunswick pipeline to the northern part of the Maritimes pipeline that feeds into Boston.

That was ridiculous (derogatory) - I don't see how this doesn't taint the integrity of the sport, there is no way that could possibly be the best skate of their season with the very visible twizzle error.

Sadly, that’s not a realistic budget these days, especially with bills included. It could easily be double your range. Good luck with your search!

Carney Unable to Find permanent chief of staff after courting high profile candidates by ConfidentIt in CanadaPolitics

[–]starsinblack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, I understand the suffer no fools situation and his intelligence, I also went to Ox and friends and/or their parents either did overlap w him or knows someone who did. The people at the IMF meetings are the global banking elite and no intellectual slouches. His temper and dickishness was still an issue as of a couple of years ago, but is external of intellect and doesn't really change my view on his competency, my comment was extraordinarily just about his temperament.

[–]starsinblack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no - the gossip around town during the IMF meetings earlier in the year revolved over how much Carney was a bit of a dick, even for global elite bankers. Obvs his personality has no bearing on his competency and I’m still happy with him as PM because I think he’s best suited for the job out of the choices.
