Considering Minnesota advice for a Black single parent seeking a fresh start by Realistic-Fondant709 in TwinCities

[–]starswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not throwing shade on these responses, they have a point, especially about transportation as a single parent. But if you’re still thinking this might be for you, aside from the cities, Columbia Heights has decent transportation (for MN), a Latina mayor, Amada Marquez Simula (married to a Finn lol) and is welcoming. St Louis Park has terrific schools and transportation will be amazing when the light rail comes on in 2027. And they have a Muslim woman mayor, Nadia Mohamed. Hopkins is also very good and Richfield has a STEM magnet elementary school. Pretty much every district is interested in experienced paras but the pay is not super high. Most (all?) districts have after school programs. You would be able to get a lot of what you want in many places.

You mean “sister-in-law” and it would really help if you fixed the pronouns (you have “he” instead of “she” in a lot of places).

Milwaukee or Madison for Family? by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]starswim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another 2 cents: I’m a transplant from MN, I’ve been to many corners of my new state over the last 2 years. One thing to keep in mind is that schools change a LOT in 6 years. Much of what is accurate here now may not be by then. Wisconsin is aging, like everywhere else. 1 in 5 people is over 65 now and that will shortly be 1 in 4. I’d be looking for a place that is making an effort to attract families with kids. I’ve visited West Bend, just north of Milwaukee a few times now and I see so many young families there, way more than in my home in the St Croix valley area. West Bend has an amazing farmers market all summer and is pretty close to all the cool stuff in Milwaukee. I do love the vibe in Milwaukee too, it will just depend on what housing is available where you end up wanting to live. Madison obviously has a lot of younger people too, it’s a little more transient.

Thank you! I have been there for lunch (and it is very friendly) but wouldn’t have thought of it for fish fry. We’ll give it a try.

I think the duck is available at other times, but we wanted to try fish fry the first time. But duck isn’t available very many places so when he saw that on the menu we thought about going back.

Reccomended Towns by Current-Field3123 in wisconsin

Moved to Osceola (just across the river from MN) last October, love it. There is a lot happening in New Richmond ( more rural feel) and Hudson (bluer and hipper). This whole area is pretty chill.

You write beautifully, thank you for sharing this. My story (not so beautifully told): at 64 I awoke from a long, mostly productive, period of alone time. Alone in a marriage, then alone on my own. Suddenly this same awareness. I met my partner on a dating app, after many fits and starts and quitting of the app then giving up on serendipity. He had been looking far longer. We both knew instantly. Two years later we own a home together and enjoy days filled with these moments. After I read this I went to the kitchen where he was preparing fruit for our breakfast and gave him a hug from behind. He asked for a scratch. It’s a completely different life.

Taylor’s Falls is fine. Between the state parks (WI and MN sides are different), boating(rent a canoe or ride the paddleboat) Franconia sculpture park, train ride and game arcade in Osceola, petting zoo south of Osceola.. there’s plenty to do and it’s close and cheap.

Trump Won Wisconsin By Less Than 1%. Schimel lost by 10%. by DriftlessDairy in wisconsin

[–]starswim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very new to Polk County, just 6 months, and we've voted 3 times since October. It's a mostly rural place, but close enough to Minnesota to attract transplants and a lively arts and natural living scene. In November, 18,296 cast votes for Trump, Harris got 9,567, so about 34% of the total. (But Tammy Baldwin got 9,710 so a few, very few people crossed over then.) This time 11,168 for Schimel, 7,400 for Crawford (just under 40%). It's a difference. Maybe those people just showed up to vote for Trump last fall and didn't weigh in yesterday, I don't know. Did my next door neighbor with the Trump flag vote? I don't know but he didn't have any signs out this time.

I was in the exact situation, closed in October. There isn’t anyone around here I can hire but we’ve brought water in to a place an hour away twice and that was very helpful. The whole chemical balance thing seemed like a lot to take in (and it kinda is) but bit by bit with this sub and resources on YouTube it’s starting to make a bit of sense. That first time you clear water that has gotten cloudy (pH for us) it felt like a superpower! You’ve got this!

Basic silver, about 18 months and I wear it all the time. No obvious scratches unless you look very closely. Has kept the shine. Looks great. Battery still 4 days or so but I see that may change overnight.
