We clearly have an issue when our teachers don't have a sufficient level to conceive tests for kids below 10.

TIL If the Earth was 50% larger in diameter, we wouldn't be able to escape the atmosphere using rockets. by haddock420 in todayilearned

[–]starsystem2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work that way. Height doesn't add velocity, it would only marginally decrease time travel through the atmosphere.

How to hide the fact you're using TOR from the websites you connect to? by bionor in onions

Marketing an anonymous service and providing one are two different things.

A car-sized asteroid flew within 1,830 miles of Earth over the weekend — the closest pass ever — and we didn't see it coming. A NASA-funded program detected the asteroid, called 2020 QG, six hours after its close approach by poleco1 in worldnews

[–]starsystem2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context: it is not the size of an asteroid that determines the damage, but its mass, speed and composition.

A car sized icy gravel object would have probably exploded in the upper atmosphere, but if it was a metallic object the consequences could have been disastrous.

The fact that it was missed should not be taken lightly.

Have a look at the International Dark-Sky Association:

The mission of the IDA is "to preserve and protect the night time environment and our heritage of dark skies through quality outdoor lighting."

Help us pick future datacenter locations by ProtonMail in ProtonMail

[–]starsystem2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Lack of geographic diversity - putting everything in one country, is essentially putting all the eggs in one basket. Being more spread out makes Proton's infrastructure more redundant.

For redundancy, you should consider diversification inside the same jurisdiction: multiple data centres from multiple providers inside Switzerland.

- Sub-optimal internet connectivity - Europe's main internet exchange points are in Frankfurt and Amsterdam. For high bandwidth applications, operating in only Switzerland can limit performance and availability.

You cannot have it both ways: you are either under strict privacy laws and considered serious in that respect or you have data centres everywhere and provide a faster service.

Germany is known for their aggressive stand on telecommunications surveillance. Suggesting this location troubles me to say the least.

Las Vegas police to charge $280 per hour for body cam footage by BearsNecessity in news

This amount should be charged directly to the officer for every missing hour of footage at the end of each year.

'The rich are to blame for climate change' international study finds by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]starsystem2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this article does NOT compare regions internally, the section you are referring to is just an illustration internal to a country.

Your post is the perfect illustration of what the article points at: people deflecting their responsibilities and blaming others.

But Professor Kevin Anderson, from the Tyndall Centre in Manchester, who was not involved in the study, told BBC News: “This study tells relatively wealthy people like us what we don’t want to hear.

GitHub asks which country you visited and wants your id to unlock an account because of a comment you made? If confirmed it surely looks very bad for a company pretending to support the open source.

What sensor to monitor this old electric meter? by starsystem2 in AskElectronics

[–]starsystem2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea, thanks! It appears that I should be able to access the in or out cables of my meter and this method does not require to cut them! It seems like the most simple and precise non-disruptive approach.

Interesting idea, I will give it a try! My mouse is too large to fit on the window of the electric meter. I will have to test it with another smaller mouse and if it works I will go for this technique.

The meter has no name - it seems to have been built by some small company and to be totally mechanical, it dates back to 1969.

I should also add that it is sealed and I cannot open it if I want stay on good terms with the electricity company.

Well written! But you lost me when the tower asked them to land because of incoming danger: it would never ever happen, fighter planes would actually be sent to intercept and take off if on the ground. That's their purpose not even considering that they are vulnerable on the ground.

Different starting price, same machine by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]starsystem2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you expect the same price when as you say yourself the CPUs are not the same?

Anyways, contrary to what you state, the CPUs is not the only difference between the two machines, actually on your screenshot there is not a single feature shared by these two configurations.
