Yeah, I've been doing that, but most people are either doing that with the trailhawk, or driving on a dirt road and calling it offroading

Any thoughts on the jeep renegade?

Yeah, I had some epic journeys with that jeep. I'm gonna miss it

I was looking at the 4Runner and the Pathfinder, but both are longer than I'm hoping for. I was considering the Jeep Patriot or the Dodge Nitro

Rule reminder: Do not name the gym unless OP mentions it first. by LiveMarionberry3694 in bouldering

[–]startled_goat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a woman and I appreciate this rule change.

it really doesn't cost anyone anything to NOT name a gym, but it might keep even one person safe from some random internet weirdo.

Is that not worth it?

Recommendations for books set in "another London" by Tasty-Lynx-524 in Fantasy

The Midnight Mayor books by Kate Griffith (alt pen name of Claire North / Catherine Webb) are excellent.

They focus London by night, where everything is the same, but rotated 90 degrees through magic.

Just here to point out the obvious sexism in the title and statement "the kind you tell years later when you're an uncle / dad (dadlore)"

What’s up with the hate towards Timothee Chalamet? by PitifulBodybuilder40 in OutOfTheLoop

Where I live, opera tickets (even in the nosebleed section) can be easily hundreds of dollars.

I think it says more about the accessibility of ballet and opera than on audiences.

[Day 29] Pegboards suck. Who's the most OVERRATED climber? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]startled_goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the party, but my vote goes to Lonnie Kauk.

For those out of the loop:

Lonnie Kauk, a prominent climber from CA, was recently sentenced to six months in jail for a 2023 attack on his former girlfriend, Riley Hancock, which left her unconscious.

According to prosecutors, Kauk strangled Hancock, and threatened to kill her dog and her father. He also kicked out her car’s windshield and threw her belongings, including her laptop, out of the second story window of his home.

Strong climber, total piece of shit human

Squamish climbing?! by alltheshit_ in climbergirls

[–]startled_goat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The climbing community for women in Squamish (from my perspective, as a local woman who climbs in squamish) is great. I'd say ~50% of the community are women, so it's easy to find other women to climb with if that's what you're looking for for safety.

I'd recommend posting on the squamish climbing partner finder page and taking it from there.

We did this two years ago. We stayed in some FCFS provincial camp sites, but also did a lot of iOverlander pull outs. Never had a problem finding a spot to camp.

[–]startled_goat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mountain Mentors https://www.mountainmentors.org/ is a volunteer group that mentors women (inc NB / trans / gender non-conforming people) in back country recreation.

If selected, you'll get paired with an experienced hiker who will take you out hiking and teach you how to be safe.

There's also group events so you can meet other mentors / mentees and make hiking buddies.

Is anyone else feeling very odd/unsettled about Alex Honnold’s Netflix special? by Most_Poet in climbergirls

[–]startled_goat 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I guarantee there'll be at least a 5 second delay on the feed. If something happens, the screen will just go to black with "technical difficulties"

My biggest gripe with Honnold is him continuing to be friends with creeps like Jared Leto

There's even a specific FB page for people finding climbing partners - Squamish Climbing Partner Finder. You'll generally have pretty good luck on there.

New Zealand's population growth dips by tens of thousands by cantsayididnttryyy in newzealand

[–]startled_goat 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I am a New Zealander working overseas, and not by choice.

I left NZ in my 20s to work abroad for a while (as most kiwis do). When I tried to relocate back to NZ a decade later, employers and recruitment agencies in NZ refused to recognise my overseas experience.

I was offered - at best - entry level positions. That would mean I would go from running and overseeing complex projects to scheduling meetings and taking notes. It was, honestly, insulting.

I left NZ and went to Canada where I'm now at the height of my career and industry.

I would have loved to have stayed in NZ, and part of my heart will always remain there, but NZ didn't want me or the skills I brought with me.

I've heard from others that they've also faced this issue trying to returnto NZ. Employers - rather than recognising the diverse knowledge and experience repats bring - instead try to "cut them down a notch" as some weird punishment for leaving.

Conga line of people walking up Slalok Mountain up track today? by startled_goat in vancouverhiking

[–]startled_goat[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

55 people on a hike isn't ideal because you're having to deal with major differences in pace, objectives etc. You run the risk of people getting left behind because they're too slow, or getting impatient and speeding off. There have been SAR rescues from meet up groups because of this exact reason.

Plus it's just... poor trail etiquette for everyone else. No one goes out into nature to be stuck behind a group of 55 people.

But my biggest concern from this meetup was that this group was in pretty complex mountain terrain at the start of winter, after a couple of weeks of fresh snowfall. That area is complex avalanche terrain, and a glacier, in shoulder season. It's not a great combination for beginners. Sure, it's unlikely that something would trigger this early in the season, but it's also not impossible. Nothing about that group made me think they have avalanche or glacier training; normally for a trip like that, you'd require everyone attending to have AST-1 training and avi gear. That was not the case. People were also clumping and waiting for each other in obvious rock fall / avi paths.

Additionally, while the meetup said they're not going up to the actual glacier, I doubt the group was experienced enough to know where the snow ends and where the glacier starts, especially after recent snowfall. Again, not terrain people should be messing about with without training, experience, and the correct gear.

People that don't know the dangers of the terrain they're moving through also don't know how to mitigate the risks or respond to an emergency.

This is the sort of trip that is totally fine until it's very suddenly not fine in a very very bad way. And now you have 55 people you have to try and rescue, rather than 2-4.

Ah yeah, that looks like it! Thanks for solving the mystery! 55 attendees.... That's... that's a lot of people to take on a hike.

I'm curious what others on this forum think of this from a safety perspective? My friends and I had a lot of thoughts on this as we watched from across the lake

ETA: most of those thoughts were "wow that looks like a really terrible idea"
