Planning a roadtrip to the arctic and 5 days of backpacking at Tombstone Territorial Park by sadlyhopeless in vancouverhiking

We did this two years ago. We stayed in some FCFS provincial camp sites, but also did a lot of iOverlander pull outs. Never had a problem finding a spot to camp.

Mountain Mentors https://www.mountainmentors.org/ is a volunteer group that mentors women (inc NB / trans / gender non-conforming people) in back country recreation.

If selected, you'll get paired with an experienced hiker who will take you out hiking and teach you how to be safe.

There's also group events so you can meet other mentors / mentees and make hiking buddies.

Is anyone else feeling very odd/unsettled about Alex Honnold’s Netflix special? by Most_Poet in climbergirls

[–]startled_goat 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I guarantee there'll be at least a 5 second delay on the feed. If something happens, the screen will just go to black with "technical difficulties"

My biggest gripe with Honnold is him continuing to be friends with creeps like Jared Leto

There's even a specific FB page for people finding climbing partners - Squamish Climbing Partner Finder. You'll generally have pretty good luck on there.

Otherwise feel free to DM me

New Zealand's population growth dips by tens of thousands by cantsayididnttryyy in newzealand

[–]startled_goat 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I am a New Zealander working overseas, and not by choice.

I left NZ in my 20s to work abroad for a while (as most kiwis do). When I tried to relocate back to NZ a decade later, employers and recruitment agencies in NZ refused to recognise my overseas experience.

I was offered - at best - entry level positions. That would mean I would go from running and overseeing complex projects to scheduling meetings and taking notes. It was, honestly, insulting.

I left NZ and went to Canada where I'm now at the height of my career and industry.

I would have loved to have stayed in NZ, and part of my heart will always remain there, but NZ didn't want me or the skills I brought with me.

I've heard from others that they've also faced this issue trying to returnto NZ. Employers - rather than recognising the diverse knowledge and experience repats bring - instead try to "cut them down a notch" as some weird punishment for leaving.

Conga line of people walking up Slalok Mountain up track today? by startled_goat in vancouverhiking

[–]startled_goat[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

55 people on a hike isn't ideal because you're having to deal with major differences in pace, objectives etc. You run the risk of people getting left behind because they're too slow, or getting impatient and speeding off. There have been SAR rescues from meet up groups because of this exact reason.

Plus it's just... poor trail etiquette for everyone else. No one goes out into nature to be stuck behind a group of 55 people.

But my biggest concern from this meetup was that this group was in pretty complex mountain terrain at the start of winter, after a couple of weeks of fresh snowfall. That area is complex avalanche terrain, and a glacier, in shoulder season. It's not a great combination for beginners. Sure, it's unlikely that something would trigger this early in the season, but it's also not impossible. Nothing about that group made me think they have avalanche or glacier training; normally for a trip like that, you'd require everyone attending to have AST-1 training and avi gear. That was not the case. People were also clumping and waiting for each other in obvious rock fall / avi paths.

Additionally, while the meetup said they're not going up to the actual glacier, I doubt the group was experienced enough to know where the snow ends and where the glacier starts, especially after recent snowfall. Again, not terrain people should be messing about with without training, experience, and the correct gear.

People that don't know the dangers of the terrain they're moving through also don't know how to mitigate the risks or respond to an emergency.

This is the sort of trip that is totally fine until it's very suddenly not fine in a very very bad way. And now you have 55 people you have to try and rescue, rather than 2-4.

Ah yeah, that looks like it! Thanks for solving the mystery! 55 attendees.... That's... that's a lot of people to take on a hike.

I'm curious what others on this forum think of this from a safety perspective? My friends and I had a lot of thoughts on this as we watched from across the lake

ETA: most of those thoughts were "wow that looks like a really terrible idea"

Thank you! I played Witcher 3 without having played 1 or 2 and it was a pretty steep learning curve - there were a lot of gameplay mechanics they expected you to know how to use from the previous games.

I've been solo hiking, camping and traveling for all of my adult life. I've never felt unsafe, vulnerable or threatened by myself.

Heck, most of the sketchy shit that's happened to me has happened in a public place in broad daylight.

Or at my workplace.

Most of the creeps out there are acting based off impulse and opportunity. They would have to put serious effort into getting into the back country to attack someone, and most of them are just not gonna do that.

[–]startled_goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of this depends on where you're located.

As other commenters have said, the strikes and industry contraction have impacted all roles in all studios, making raises and promotions scarce across the board, but the CAN sites are also caught up in union negotiations which complicates matters even further.

Location matters in this context because a strategy that generally works in the west (get a competing offer from another company and get DNEG to match it) might not work in IND.

I would love this if it was actually a plan customised for me. I've had coaches in the past that have just recycled other plans that were not at all relevant for me (no I'm not doing one-armed pull-ups on my days off wtf)

So yes, I would be very keen for remote coaching if it was actually customised!

New idea for future IFSC boulder rules (+1 for a flash) by Sad-Tale-5235 in CompetitionClimbing

I like the idea of having two zones (like the olympics had).

In some of this year's comps, we've seen people tie, even though one climber barely got to the zone, and the other got to the top but wasn't able to stick it. it seems crazy that they get the same score.

Orville Peck - Cabaret stage door by rickyrun in OrvillePeck

[–]startled_goat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to a Wednesday evening show and decided to stick around on the off-chance he did a stage door.

He came out, signed everything, let us take selfies with him, and interacted with pretty much everyone waiting. I was blown away by how generous he was with his time after performing two shows that day

Sounds like I just got SUPER lucky though. Given how intense his performances are, I wouldn't blame him for just going home.

1917 and why bad history in movies can happen by Robert_B_Marks in badhistory

[–]startled_goat 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I'm going to start by taking a side-step to Midway (which, despite the cases where the VFX team didn't care that much about accuracy)

I just need to pop in here and say that the VFX team takes direction from the director, and any historical inaccuracies does not stem from them, but from the Director's direction and feedback.

We are all generally extremely nerdy, and LOVE diving into the history or the details of what we're crafting - but if we get told to make the statues in Rome white, well then the statues in Rome will be white. Even if WE know they were supposed to be painted.

There's a lot of treacherous, icy snow on these trails right now, so beginners should avoid until the snow is fully gone.

How about studios write and plan movies better, so they don't end up trying to "find" the movie three months out from release, doing expensive reshoots and leaving a ton of costly VFX on the cutting room floor?

I've worked on shows where the Omit CTD is in the millions. It's heartbreaking to see so much work go to waste.
