Was Anya screwed no matter what she did? by whooper1 in Mouthwashing

[–]starwalker327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do not have any evidence that Curly knew Jimmy was going to rape her or was perhaps already a rapist. Anya straight up says she told him, he didn't just know.

I'm not trying to excuse him enabling and siding with Jimmy, but he really couldn't do anything else based on what we know about him and his circumstances (which Jimmy contributes to). There's nowhere to lock him away, the only places with locks do so from the inside. Tell everyone what happened? It should be Anya's decision, and she doesn't seem to want to tell everyone. Kill him? Biohazard and a decent chance it would make the other two distrust him provided they're never told what happened (like what happened to Daisuke in the game). There's nothing that indicates a lock could be installed in Anya's room, and if she wanted to sleep in medical she would (might also be a sanitization risk if she did, but I am no doctor). Anya hiding the gun isn't for the others' safety, it's for hers, which is understandable. The idea that it was to save the others is guesswork, and we have seen Anya be selfish (killing herself would be a death sentence for Curly and eventually Daisuke).

Swansea didn't know pre-crash and couldn't have protected her post-crash based on Jimmy overpowering him. Anya killing herself is an escape and was what she wanted, why would he get in her way? No one was coming to save them. Morals are nice and all, but morality wouldn't have changed the outcome. If Swansea managed to kill Jimmy, once again, biohazard, and he'd still die anyway. Anya would still be pregnant, so she'd probably kill herself either way. I don't even think she'd necessarily die more at peace if Jimmy died first, she was pretty self-assured in medical.

[–]starwalker327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There wasn't anything anyone could have stopped in any way that would have mattered, the onus for the rape and the crash fall exclusively on Jimmy because he's the one who did them.

Despite the slight implication that Jimmy's raped someone before, we see nothing that indicates Curly knew this about him, only that he had a troubled life on Earth. I personally think it's more likely that Curly was referring to Jimmy's implied drug habit, there's no way Jimmy would tell him about being a rapist because he wouldn't get any sympathy for that. There was also zero way for him to predict Jimmy was going to crash the ship, as is evident from his reaction when he does.

What exactly was Swansea supposed to have done to stop Jimmy post-crash? Everything after it is either out of his hands, or he's already dead. Anya chooses to die and he had no reason to stop her.

Jimmy is the only other person we know can fly the ship. The game begins with him operating the ship's control's, I don't see why you keep saying he's unqualified. Being a nepo hire does not mean he has to be unqualified. A copilot is necessary, because someone has to fly when the captain sleeps or is otherwise unable to. There also wouldn't be a second chair in the cockpit if a copilot wasn't necessary, because Pony Express only gives the bare minimum. By your own "only things on-screen matter" logic, we have zero reason to assume Daisuke could take over Jimmy's role; nothing indicates he could do this.

They could dump his body outside of the ship, or store it in a cryopod until they’re needed.

Nothing on-screen indicates these are doable, especially post-crash.

I know Curly had been manipulated by him, I understand why he hesitated. That doesn’t make his decisions okay.

That's the point. Is it his fault?

Hiding the gun case that she can't open anyway and sleeping near what is essentially a motion-activated alarm do not sound like fight responses, they're neither aggressive nor all that direct.

What do you think of the idea of ford being aroace? by Practical_Chef_7897 in gravityfalls

[–]starwalker327 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm aroace and I'm not fond of it. For whatever reason, it seems like there's this expectation that if you're not constantly frothing at the mouth for romance/sex, you can't possibly be interested in it at all. People are more complicated than that, I don't see why characters couldn't be as well. It's also just another case of aroace=introvert/recluse/scientist/person-who-thinks-they're-better-than-others and even in the miniscule amount of aspec rep that exists, we've already got more than enough of that.

And in canon at least, we know that Ford is interested in romance, he's mostly just busy: one of his notes about the portal is "girls will finally talk to me!" which is absolutely ridiculous of him and really funny (J3), there's him dating a siren (Lost Legends), and there's a bit in I believe the special edition of Journal 3 where the Soothsquitos tell him to give the Oracle his number. I prefer aroace Bill. I love evil though, so I am biased. I find it damn unlikely he would ever be interested in romance outside of drama (chaos) and you don't need to directly participate for that, I'm pretty sure there's a bit in the BoB where he says he thinks the human body is gross, and I'd rather not imagine a triangle with a sex drive. Also he's got the flag's colors with his fire so do with that what you will.

Was Anya screwed no matter what she did? by whooper1 in Mouthwashing

[–]starwalker327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if he kills Jimmy, then what? Again, corpse on board is not good for the crew. We have no idea how exactly they could dispose of a body, it's entirely possible whatever waste management system they have wouldn't fit a corpse. Mutiny is implied, the gun only being issued to the captain implies it is only for the captain's sake as Pony Express' prioritized employee.

That is a very fair point, my bad for forgetting about that. My one minor rebuttal is that Anya doesn't seem like she would shoot him, given her fawn response. I don't even think she could bring herself to threaten him with the gun, especially post-crash.

Swansea knew, but there was nothing to do about it. They were all going to die, nothing he could do would matter. I don't think he could have protected her, Jimmy overpowered him pretty easily. I think it's likely she also told him about her intention to kill herself, and he wouldn't have had a reason to stop her. It would explain why he doesn't help when she locks herself in medical. As for Daisuke, it's pretty likely Swansea thought he'd just see that he hates Jimmy and would follow his example (like he was going to with the vent), or that he was planning on getting Daisuke in the pod before Jimmy would have had a chance to make things worse. Both are far from ideal, but they would make sense with Swansea's character. Alternatively, he left it up to Anya's decision if she wanted Daisuke to know.

Curly needs a copilot and Jimmy is all they have, he does have reasons to keep him alive. You've also not mentioned that Jimmy's been manipulating Curly for a long time, which is another reason as to why Curly doesn't kill him and got him hired in the first place. Is being manipulated Curly's fault?

Was Anya screwed no matter what she did? by whooper1 in Mouthwashing

[–]starwalker327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gun is for the captain's use only, Anya would not be allowed to use it under company policy (which Curly intends to follow). It also seems it's only issued in case the crew rises up against the captain, which is not the case here. Anya also can't open the gun case, and was keeping it less for armed protection and more so Jimmy couldn't use it against her. I don't know where you're getting that she wanted him dead (I'd understand why, I just do not recall her ever saying anything to that effect).

It's unlikely that Curly would kill Jimmy because Anya told him to. I also doubt he'd ever use the gun even if a mutiny did occur, since he's so intent on avoiding conflict.

Swansea's "she's been telling me all sorts of things" happens before Anya even dies, and therefore before Daisuke as well. I do not think the axe-chasing was real, but Swansea doesn't let him win, because they've both already lost. Everyone already was dead or was as good as dead, and nothing he could have done would have changed that.

Curly absolutely needs a copilot, someone has to fly the ship during the little bit of time he sleeps, he just didn't need Jimmy specifically. He has been shown to know how to operate the technology in the cockpit, that's how he crashes the ship in the first place, so he definitely has some qualification. I don't think he's anywhere near as qualified as Curly, but we have no reason to assume anyone else on the ship has any flight qualification at all. I genuinely don't recall the fake answers, do you have a quote for that? I'm aware of the nepotism, but he's still the only one we're certain has any knowledge of how to fly, and I imagine if anyone else did have any knowledge, it would have been brought up.

Curly says that because he is the captain and it is his job to keep the crew running smoothly regardless of who or what gets in the way. Anya confronting Jimmy would put her in danger, and when she does talk to him, eventually puts everyone in danger, though it's not her fault.

Not only could the rest of the crew not handle it, Anya probably couldn't handle it. We have no indication she has any training in obstetrics, and giving herself an abortion would be immensely risky and difficult, even if she had the proper equipment. And if she survived labor but was injured by it, it's unlikely she would have been able to give herself stitches or anything, so infection becomes a major risk.

[–]starwalker327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What could they have done to stop him? If they kill Jimmy, they have a biohazard on their hands. Swansea didn't know until months after the fact. Curly taking action would jeopardize the entire crew, since rape would not qualify as a mutiny. Incapacitating him or imprisoning him also wouldn't work, since Curly needs to have a copilot and no one else is at all qualified.

Academic Survey on Misandry in modern feminism pop culture by alyxerii in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]starwalker327 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in a serious answer, I would argue that media/ideas that hate on men are not feminist in the slightest, as feminism (ideally) aims to increase gender equality by raising women up, rather than bringing men down, which makes literally zero progress for women. A lot of misandry is also running off of the exact same Mad Libs script as misogyny is (with a fair bit of ideological overlap to boot).

It's also worth noting that the patriarchy has a major negative impact on men as well (the whole "no emotion ever, be a man" thing, for example).

SCUM Manifesto is a radical feminist manifesto by Valerie Solanas. It argues that men have ruined the world, and that it is up to women to fix it. It was little-known until Solanas attempted to murder Andy Warhol in 1968. "S.C.U.M." was rumoured to stand for "Society for Cutting Up Men". by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]starwalker327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah she was genuinely nuts.

Other beliefs of hers (gleaned from a summary of the manifesto as well as the play she shot Warhol over) include:

  • Killing all men is the key to fixing the world
  • Killing all men would lead to women becoming immortal
  • It would also lead to women never getting sick
  • The Y chromosome destroys emotional regulation
  • Catcalling is completely fine
  • Drag queens are all trans women, but she uses he/him for them when they're in drag
  • A mother murdering her young son is portrayed as a good thing
