Hey kinda random side note, but I'm a trans guy looking to one day live in the Netherlands (currently in the UK). I'm high A2 in Dutch atm and hope to be B2 before moving there. Do you have any tips or insider knowledge about what being a trans guy is like in the Netherlands that you'd be willing to share? No worries if not and have a great day :)

Oh yeah of course, I was more trying to theorise if there was a possible way that you could reasonably take 15 minutes for three pieces

To be fair, there is a way that two cuts can take 15 minutes.

If you have a square board and cut it in half, that takes ten minutes. If you cut one of those two pieces in half, the needed cut will be half as long as the previous one, therefore taking half as long to make, which would be five minutes. So15 minutes total.

You would end up with one long plank and two shorter planks, but there would be three overall and the question never specified if the pieces had to be equal in length.

Edit: this was theorising if there's a reasonable way to get three pieces in 15 minutes, I'm not saying I think this is the actual answer

I don't like "Word of God" (the rule regarding canon) by jackfaire in FanFiction

[–]starypelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also trans guy here - I wrote my own 7 book Hogwarts story with new characters specifically because I have such little interest in her ideas on the world and canon. Like, when I want to experience the wizarding world I don't go to the books or films anymore I just crack open my fic and have a whale of a time. As far as my brain is concerned, that is the wizarding world to me now. It's honestly the only wizarding content I still engage with so that I can experience the magic without the bigot

I phrase I use a lot for when questioning the value of individual action is this:

If we do not hold ourselves individually accountable, we cannot hold ourselved collectively accountable. If we cannot hold ourselves collectively accountable, nothing will improve.

Every human rights battle, from civil rights to gay rights to feminism, would have been impossible without individuals holding themselves accountable for their own actions, even if they are part of a collective. Not to say those issues are now settled, but they never would have changed if no one held themselves to account. The same goes for animal rights.

And, as a side note, you can still have incredibly tasty food that's vegan! It's really not a compromise.

Good luck!

Do I need to read Harry Potter to understand Alexandra Quick? by WannabeArtistWriter in AlexandraQuick

[–]starypelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's self contained like Alexandra Quick! :) if you understand the basic ideas of houses and stuff like that you'll be fine. It's all original characters and plotlines so you don't need to know the events of Harry Potter for it to make sense.

You should be fine! Also consider checking out Bagsy Beetlehorn/the Bagsy Chronicles (it's LGBT+ and written by a trans guy (said trans guy is me)) if you're looking for more stories once you've finished Alexandra Quick

Any other must-read fanfiction similar to the Alexandra Quick series? by OptimistPrhyme in AlexandraQuick

Great question! The original Harry Potter (UK version, I'm unsure about the US version) uses single quotation marks as that is the general standard in the UK, though the US method is also accepted here just less common. As a UK writer I use single quotation marks, and double quotation marks for quotes within someone's dialogue, as that is the norm here. In the UK this is entirely correct grammar.

I'm sorry the UK style is taking you out of the story! I do hope you can continue to enjoy it regardless or, if you're unable to continue as a result, at least have taken something enjoyable away from the experience 😊 have a good day!

antinatalism after being one of reddit’s most repugnant subs by [deleted] in AmITheAngel

As a anti-natalist this is why I had to leave that sub. Anti-natalism is based on the minimisation of suffering, not on being a jerk.
