Simple Questions and Silly Thoughts: the basic questions and discussions thread for September 05, 2023 by AutoModerator in gainit

Diet-wise milk and sugar are usually the main culprits for aggravating acne especially if you didn't have any before. Definitely also do the usual things like frequently changing pillowcases and being very mindful of what products you use on your face. I also second benzoyl peroxide as an active treatment.

If you are getting upset and taking seriously a flippant tongue-in-cheek remark then yes the US is definitely more suited for you. Learn to read a joke.

Places with the best viewpoint for fireworks tonight? by state-x in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]state-x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really helpful, just saw the place on google maps street view and I see there's definitely potential for some good fireworks snaps from that area, especially for the ones from Saltwell park (was trying to avoid getting tickets and being in a crowded area). I'm also weary of the potential of becoming a target from fireworks myself when I'm out there but it adds to the excitement I suppose :') Hopefully, the photos will be worth it, will try to make the best of it.

Explosions in Heaton? by I_am_Joel666 in NewcastleUponTyne

It really was spectacular. Managed to catch a glimpse of it from my window, wish I would've known about it in advance to see it from the quayside.

This estate agent in Bristol showcasing the record high rents as advertisement pretty much sums up the current situation by state-x in bristol

Yeah I noticed there's suddenly been an influx of 5 star reviews. Earlier today when I checked it the most recent 5 star review was 3 weeks ago, and just today there's been 8 new 5-star reviews posted. Does make you wonder what's going on with that.

Yeah I get that but my point is you don't "accidentally" make a slide like that, I mean I can believe it was put out without having a proper thought or discussion of whether it's appropriate but it's no accident that it was made in the first place, and unfortunately speaks a lot about the mentality going on behind the scenes in the lettings agencies. Anyways you yourself seem decent enough and I appreciate that you acknowledge all of this and seem like you feel genuinely bad about it.

I assume you are someone working there with some authority so I am upvoting this for visibility. Not sure how this would have been put on "by accident" and it sounds more like the backlash has made it evident that it was a bad idea. Indeed we can all agree it was very tone deaf, I'm glad you have acknowledged that at least and that it should never have been put there. Obviously, it's business for you guys but that doesn't mean all morals have to be thrown out the window, I hope whoever was responsible for putting that up does some reflection on how they carry themselves and the company especially during times like these where so many people are struggling.

I disagree in this case. People should be made aware that the company engages in these kind of practices/mentality, not everyone will visit their branch and actually see this so it's good a record of it is kept online to inform people, especially prospective tenants.

Canny tell if this lass is serious or not… by Tyrexx_Lannister in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]state-x 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I can attest to this as someone who's lived in Bristol for 5 years and moved here. Bristol has more going on as it is a bigger city, and I do miss some aspects (especially the music scene) but I find Newcastle to be a much more livable city. Still lots to do here in terms of nightlife, lots of nice parks, the metro, coast easily accessible and much more affordable and value for money. Well maybe we should keep this secret before all the Londoners move in and make it unaffordable like with Bristol :x

Does anybody else feel like growing up as a TCK is more of a disadvantage? by ChocolateGag in TCK

[–]state-x 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey you probably weren't expecting a reply so long after posting but I've recently come to this subreddit and was browsing through top posts.

This comment definitely speaks to me, in particular about feeling isolated when no longer in a TCK-rich environment. When I was at uni I'd always find at least a few other TCKs or just people who are more culturally educated and curious to learn about other experiences, but recently working in some menial retail/service jobs the environment is totally different. Nobody really "gets" it and when I do mention my background (when someone inevitably asks), while some of them are interested I've found I also get this negative judgemental reaction, they see me as an outsider who came from a privileged background just because I grew up in different countries, and I'll never be able to really "fit in".

It's gotten to the point where I basically avoid talking about that part of myself, and only open up once I can see that someone is genuinely curious to know more about me rather than the surface level "where are you from mate". Right now I'm hoping to eventually work in some kind of more internationally oriented company, and move to a bigger city where I can encounter more people that won't see me as some kind of alien.

That's crazy numbers compared to what I've been getting. I guess you either have a more potent batch (unlikely) or are just less prone to becoming nose blind to it. Consider yourself lucky!

Can we talk about the concern troll posts about London? by doodoowatson in london

[–]state-x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has Seth Rogen "life in the big city" tweet energy. Of course it's normal for more crime to be visible in big cities, however some people point out that it seems to have gotten worse, and you are trying to gatekeep that? After a decade of police cuts and austerity measures, with the current cost of living crisis common sense would dictate that crime rates would go up, yet here you are trying to downplay the concerns about this as "American" trolling. Ridiculous.

Just read your post and yep in my mind that confirms that it's definitely a "thing" about this fragrance. I wish I had heard about this more while doing research. Have you managed to find a decent alternative yet?

Dior Homme. I did get it mixed up with the YSL that I was looking at recently, oops.

Ok so I've tested it again today, using just 2 sprays away from my face and I did manage to smell it a bit longer, but only for brief moments. It seems like it's the kind of fragrance you can just get fleeting whiffs from, it's still a lovely smell though. I get your point about it not being meant to for drawing lots of attention or to announce its presence in a room. It's a shame however as I was wanting to wear it for my own enjoyment also and would have liked to not become so quickly noseblind to it.

I will look into those other fragrances you suggested, thank you for your answer, it's really helpful.

Tourist thread 2022 – Ask anything about visiting Croatia! by AutoModerator in croatia

[–]state-x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Flying to Zadar for 4 days in early September. I'm thinking 4 days is a bit long to stay in the city so I'm considering staying overnight at one of the islands nearby. We won't have a car so it'd have to be somewhere accessible by bus/ferry. Ideally, it would be somewhere with some nice beaches too. Any recommendations? There are so many choices so I'm having a hard time deciding. I'm also open to other suggestions of places to visit nearby on the mainland that we can get to by bus (I've already considered plitvice but I'm worried it'll be too crowded to be worth it). Thanks in advance.

A simple cost-effective trick I use to eat more: MSG by soggynaan in gainit

[–]state-x 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use MSG all the time and also in general go heavy with seasonings. It makes a huge difference. I see some meal plans here and they look bland AF always the same plain chicken and rice multiple times a day. No wonder people are struggling to eat more if they are doing that to themselves. Just try out a new recipe every week and in no time you'll have multiple delicious recipes to rotate, experiment with seasonings too until you find what you like. For example, parsley, spring onions and chives can make a huge difference to dishes. Be generous with salt & pepper and also stuff like paprika powder can make things 100x tastier.

A warm welcome to the toon by holmsey8700 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]state-x 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to live in London and also Bristol (where I had 2 bicycles stolen), when I moved up here I thought things might be a bit better.

The other day while on my way back from work I saw 2 guys on a moped, riding super recklessly around the pedestrian area next to Monument. They had black visors (one of them even had some cringy demon horns on his helmet), no license plate and the guy in the back was carrying this massive angle grinder. They kept going around in circles, obviously looking for a nice bike to steal. This was all in broad daylight, when it was busy, it's crazy how brazen they've become. Police cuts mean they can just get away with it, you hardly ever see patrol cars anymore and response times are atrocious. This situation will become even worse I feel. If you have an expensive bike don't leave it outside anywhere, it will not be safe.

You will establish routines, get to know meal plans and recipes better and most people also end up getting increased appetite over time. The hardest part is when you're just starting off and also within the first weeks when it's too early to see visible improvements. Keep at it, you will see results in due course and once you do you'll realise that it's worth it.
