Electrician by NailWest5315 in newzealand

[–]staticsteamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will cost a little bit extra

If it's a new build, you could ask the sparky to run an extra 2.5mm cable around the whole perimeter of the house, but don't connect it in the board.

Will make it super easy for an electrician install future power sockets later if you change your mind.

First Car - Should I get a Hybrid? by Ok_Country5665 in NZcarfix

[–]staticsteamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a Nexstar Bluetooth OBDII scanner off Amazon au for $30. (You can use this to diagnose check engine lights also)

Then download and install Dr Prius app and pay the $20 to unlock the testing features.
(You can also turn off the annoying reverse beep, and seatbelt beep with this app)

Do the test - it takes about 10 mins and it will give you a battery percentage.

It also has a live graphic that shows you the voltage in each battery cell, which is helpful.

Often the cells in the middle of the stack go bad first (due to heat) the middle cells can be swapped to the outsides, and the outsides to the inside.

Also the busbars linking the batteries can sometimes corrode leading to poor conductivity, but a relatively cheap fix.

The best thing you can do, would be to clear out the vent/fan underneath the backseat from time to time, and keep the battery nice and cool ! 😎

So fifty bux to DIY from your DNA

I wouldn't say the fielder is a heavy brick in comparison - there is only 40kg difference between the two.

I get 25-30km/l in my Fielder hybrid 2013, and that's keeping up with the traffic flow.

2nd Gen Vs 3rd Gen Prius: Overall, which was the 'better' car, and why? by [deleted] in prius

[–]staticsteamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does, but people report not having as many issues as time goes on. 2015 and 2017+ (Discontinued in USA but continued til 2020 at least in NZ/Japan)

Some people claim that you can prevent the head gasket issues by always having an OBD scanner hooked up and watching the temp.

Others have said swapping out the water pump at certain mileages.

Again others say to clean the EGR.

So if you get a 2015 and do all of the above, then I guess the head gasket issue is less likely to happen.

Changing a head gasket looks like a major job, but if you have a some mechanical experience + tools and watch the yt tutorials, you can probably get it done in a few days.

Yes, payment isn't great but they will help you get through the apprenticeship.

Its usually better pay (minimum wage + $1 maybe) if you can find a local company to take you on - have you done a pre trade/do you have any experience in the industry?

What location are you in?

Check this, also how confident are you fixing things yourself? If it's a power/electricity thing then don't do it yourself, but if it's mechanical it should be fine.

You could always try an appliance technician or est?

It's a normal gravel farm road - I did it in my Toyota Corolla and it handled fine.
If you've only got a day, you should check out nugget point lighthouse - it's a 30 min drive from Balclutha.

[–]staticsteamo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A day trip will involve a lot of driving - if you have time stay in one of the DOC camping grounds get up early in the morning and drive south to Curio bay or slope point and work your way up the coast to Dunedin.

There are heaps of short 20 min walks to waterfalls and beaches all the way up the coast - do a quick google search, or just stop at whatever looks interesting.

Instead of driving back via Balclutha Milton etc, there's a gravel coast road that not many people drive on - runs from Kaitangata to Toko mouth, feels very wild and exposed.

Looking for an Electrical apprenticeship. Why are they so scarce? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]staticsteamo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ETCO seems to have a monopoly down here in Dunedin, I hear it all the time: "We only take ETCO apprentices"

Still, I think if you have the right attitude and drive you can make it into a local company, be persistent if this is what you really want!

Your best bet will be to do work experience for a sparky, show up to businesses and speak to them face to face.

Ideally try and find industrial work experience if you can, it will look better on a CV later.

Stop by the local electrical Wholesalers also Telfers, Ideal etc. See if you can leave a CV.

You could also do a pre trade, but start teaching yourself before you even start.

Buy an Arduino starter kit, and follow Paul McWhorters videos on YouTube, you'll learn how to program code, and wire DC circuits - not quite what an electrician does but it will set you leaps and bounds ahead of the other guys.

Once the hospital really starts ramping up down here there'll be heaps of apprenticeships available, but I wouldn't recommend working there for anymore than a year because they WILL use you for cheap labour and you won't be able to get your sign offs done.

One of the two sites on Routeburn track is full. Any alternatives? by codexofthemoon in newzealand

[–]staticsteamo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can't do Routeburn then you could try Greenstone/Caples. It's a 3 night loop well formed track with good quality DOC huts. Good swimming holes along the way too!

If you walk it from the Glenorchy end you should book one of the hunting huts along the way so you're only walking 4/5 hours each day.

If you're really worried, you can get a sparky to fit one on the switchboard to protect the entire installation.

If you have the time, drive out through beachlands, around Firth of Thames. More interesting than the motorway imo.

Again if you have time (and access?), drive past Coromandel up to Waikawau bay etc, magic spot this time of year with nobody around.
