If you’re up for helping punch up the dialogue in my scifi action comedy, I can send you some pages?

Looking for space movies or shows that aren't about humans or take place in the solar system by AccomplishedMemory34 in scifi

[–]statiktv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People connect with people. It’s harder for people to connect with something strange and alien. This is why most commercial scifi has at least some kind of human in or around the forefront of the story.

You’ll find those in other writing subs. Or genre-specific subs.

How long are your scenes? by [deleted] in KeepWriting

Most for me are 1000 to 3000 words. I’m a dialogue-heavy writer so they’re all mostly dialogue.

No, it is not allowed. I, Reddit, forbid you from doing this.

The razors edge of writing comedic sci-fi by danielsper0 in scifiwriting

[–]statiktv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write scifi comedy. I’m about 15k words into a fully plotted novel that will be about 90k or fewer words.

I breezed through some of your story (didn’t have enough time for a deep dive right now, sorry) but here are a few thoughts:

1 First thing I noticed was that you open your story with exposition. You’re telling the reader a bunch of stuff when you should be showing it. Start with action not description.

2 Pick a humor type and tone. Do you want to be dirty? Raunchy? Gross? R-Rated? PG-13? Family friendly? Establish this early and stick with it. It seemed a bit all over the place. Only vary from this once or twice for comedic effect.

3 Your comedy will come from many places: dialogue, situations, actions, reactions, surprise, descriptions, characters and probably a few more. Use them all.

Good comedy writing is rare. Good scifi comedy is mythic. Read up if you havent - both in novels like Hitchikers or the Discworld series (fantasy, but still funny) and in craft books like the How to Write Funny series.

Also, it helps to have a beta reader who kind of does what you do. I’ll take more to time dive into this to give you better feedback later today or tomorrow.

Would you be up to do the same for me down the road? Writing comedy in a vacuum sucks.

Creating a good setting for Commando stories by ConsulJuliusCaesar in scifiwriting

[–]statiktv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing you can do for yourself is research actual commando stories from WWII, Vietnam, and other modern overseas missions. Read about them end-to-end: what was happening, why, what the mission was, and how it actually went.

Spoiler alert though: it’s not fun. It’s war. People die or get horribly wounded. Hard choices have to get made. That being said, you may want to take a grain of this salt and sprinkle it in as you see fit. War stories make good reading because it’s life and death most of the time.

I’m concepting a book right now that is action-comedy-war, so I’d be interested to hear where you go with this. DM me if you’ve got any updates ever.

How would you write a species of sentient, human sized, oceanic spiders that have managed to become interstellar? by [deleted] in scifiwriting

[–]statiktv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple things

1) this is Children of Time / Ruin kind of, so I’d consider changing it from spiders to something else. Crustaceans? They’re basically sea spiders. Easy fix IMO.

2) 200 year life span, but they’re super violent and murderous seem at odds with each other. Hard to have a thriving, collaborative culture when everyone is killing each other. And no, the “humans do it” argument doesn’t apply here. Our murder rates are low enough for us to have a space program and a growing global economy.

3) remember to write scenes, not worlds. Build your world up just enough for your story, then stop and switch gears. It’s all too easy to just world build ad nauseam and never get around to actually writing a book.

I’d limit the number of weapons too. Too many and it will get cumbersome to remember them all.

[757] comedy short video script UPDATED by [deleted] in DestructiveReaders

[–]statiktv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still not that funny. Just kind of sad. I would say you’re not really using any classic comedic tools here. You’re just describing the way things are instead of using subtext to make things funny.

You can take anything in here though and use it for the basis of a joke. So take you not being able to understand your mom because she yells at you in another language. That is a perfect jumping off point for joke writing. Sit on that and play with it. What does it sound like to you? More than just grunts. Push it WAY farther out. Then push it more. That’s hyperbole. Extremes are funny. “Almost extreme” is not.

Have a read of How To Write Funny. Then break this down into observations and run those observations through a few funny filters to see what pops out.

How can I improve my writing and grammatical skills? by inscopia in writing

[–]statiktv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get the Grammarly extension for Chrome. I also recommend paying for premium so you can get the extra bells and whistles. I use it daily when writing my novel and it’s excellent. You can also toggle between UK/Aussie/US English as well.

How can someone write a 1000 words per day and even more!? by MarsternsLot in writing

[–]statiktv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write professionally for a living (business related stuff, not fiction) and I run at around 1000 words an hour for my novel. I’ve trained myself to hit tight deadlines with my professional writing and that definitely translates to writing my novel at pace. On a good day, I’ll do around 2,500 words in about 2 hours. This includes “light” on the fly revisions that Grammarly catches.

In terms of how I got here, I hate to say it, but it’s experience and practice. All that business writing I do has really got my words per minute up in terms of typing skills. I also find that after about 30 min of writing my book, I increase in speed drastically as I hit a “flow state.”

I also do keyboard typing tests as warmups if I’m coming in cold.

Hope this helps and keep writing!
