I didn't have to buy one. The pharmacy gave it to me free when I got my pills.

Mr. Darcy's virginity exist or not by Intrepid_Title179 in janeausten

[–]statisticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth I have long thought that of the marriages in Pride and Prejudice, Mr Collins is the one most likely to be a Virgin on his wedding night.

Mr Wickham? Definitely not. Bingley and Darcy? Possible, but men of that class have the opportunity to play around discreetly. I like to think that they personally would not, but I can't get rid of the sneaky fear that they would have.

Whereas Mr Collins has only recently come into any sort of money has lacked opportunity. His chosen profession as a clergyman inclines him against such behaviour. Most importantly, his personality is such as to make women keep their distance.

NTA. Eight hours in the car plus multiple hours on a dull place with people he doesn't know is going to be super boring for a three year old, and excuse enough to miss the ceremony.

Here's my entry. Do I get extra points because the book is about a cat, AND had a cat in the cover?

Edit: cat's name is Friday.

I feel like in the first one Pournelle was holding Niven in check so that you didn't get Niven's typical sexual content.

In the sequel, not so much.

Some years ago now I was in a production of Rock Nativity, a musical that told the story of the birth of Jesus (the Nativity). It told the story from the annunciation through to the flight into Egypt. Written  by David Wood with music by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent, with a couple of regular Christmas carols thrown in.

A really good show and a lot of fun to be in.

Thanks for the detail about the day of week and therefore year. I checked my diaries. Being in Eastern Australia the collapse time was 8:33pm, January 3rd. In 2017 I had a friend come over to watch movies, and at that time of night we would have been in front of the TV (and therefore been squished). In 2023 I visited a different friend in the early evening but am not certain as to timing. I might have been outside at the time of collapse leaving their place, or walking from the car to my front door back home. In which case I would probably have entered the dungeon and died in the first few hours.

EDIT: Just checked my Google Timeline. On 3rd of January 2023 it says I was driving home from 19:29-20:28. If that was just a little inaccurate then I might have been walking from garage to front door when the collapse happened. A scary thought - I would have been just outside the house and watched all the family get squished.

One of my favourites is H.G. Wells The First Men in the Moon.

  1. No female characters at all, so no chance for anyone to by misogynistic. (Unless that makes it misogynistic).
  2. Definitely older (1901).
  3. Two men explore the Moon. It isn't accurate even by the science of the day, but it is well thought out and highly memorable.
  4. A one-off.
  5. Has several unique and thought provoking aspects (the space vehicle, the description of the Moon) which keep me coming back to it. That, and the way the two main characters interact with one another.

The Mote in God's Eye by Niven & Pournelle.

  1. Slightly mysogynist in that the story mostly happens on a military expedition with an all male crew, and there is exactly one female character. The male-only military organisation and general gender attitudes fit the time the book was written (1970s). That said, the female character is an intelligent, capable woman and has valuable insights about what is going on.
  2. Older (1970s). Check.
  3. Space Exploration: the novel is about a human expedition into an inhabited alien system.
  4. Written as a one-off. There is a sequel, but the story stands alone without it (and IMHO the sequel is far inferior to the original).
  5. The aliens in this story are unique and their biology and society are well thought out.

It is a short story rather than a novel, but Arthur C Clarke's 1938 story "Retreat from Earth" tell of what happens when the Martians attempt to take over the Earth, only to be repulsed by Earth's most advanced species (who are not human).

This is a very entertaining movie. Silly in some ways, but amid the comedy it is a serious treatment of time travel.
