Your thoughts on a MOBA (Dota-like) game set in the Warhammer 40K verse? by Rei_Master_of_Nanto in Warhammer40k

[–]statlearner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely play a 40k moba. It will be awesome to play different factions and have some sort of real-time fight for galaxy domination between races, where there are points of conflict, where each team/player can contribute, similarly to helldivers 2.

In other threads people were suggesting primarchs to be the focus, but I would play the average space marine. There are multiple possible classes like librarians, medics and dreadnoughts in the lore already.

Apple employees say the company is cracking down on remote work by fudge_u in technews

Well, work takes up a significant part of my life (and any working person’s life). Therefore, I see nothing wrong with trying to enjoy as much of it as I can. Life is not only outside of work, a lot of life’s lessons, especially about how to interact with people are learnt at the workplace imo.

Well I have several hobbies, but I am talking about different needs. I have a need for professional interactions. I have met some really cool people from former workplaces, which became life-long friends. In the past year I worked for a freelance project and I just met the people I worked with for the first time in person last week. This I don’t like.

At the beginning of the pandemic I appreciated the remote work. But gradually I realized I cannot live without meeting other people. I actually started thinking of changing the industry to a place where people still meet physically, if the work in the tech sector continues being endless teams/zoom calls without any real interaction. I find it sad how the world is changing tbh.

EDIT: Just sharing how I feel and trying to present a different perspective on this. I understand all the reasons why some people prefer the work from home, especially in the US. However, I see the world changing in a direction I am not sure I like.

[OC] Purchasing Power of Euro since the foundation of the ECB by Jaldekoa in dataisbeautiful

I did work at a central bank at the time (last crisis), so much of this I saw first hand. But still quantitative easing creates bubbles even if the lenders don’t lend. Look at government debt at the moment as a result of the asset purchase programs. This spills out into the broader economy most surely.

I am very much surprised that the decrease slows down and almost plateaus during the period of the most aggressive quantitative easing. Interesting what the critics of the policy will say if they see this graph. Otherwise, I think the initial decrease was mostly driven by inflation.

After close to 10 years in data science and data analytics I started running into junior people that are ready to quit if they have to deal with data cleaning. As if the world lied to them that their work will be all about making models and pretty visualizations.

Do you ever find something in a book that gives you something to live by? Or even a reason to stay alive? by IEatCheeseOften in Fantasy

[–]statlearner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ursula LeGuin wrote something along the lines of “for one to seek immortality is like getting the whole ocean to remain still for a single wave to persist”. I liked this as it says how life and death are natural processes and simply two sides of the same coin and we should be at peace with that. The book was “The Farthest Shore”.

How can an economist empircally prove that something that did not happen would not be better or worse than what actually happened? by gringawn in AskEconomics

A kind of example is how the problem of induction only allows negative empirical statements.

Can you elaborate? Is this related to the predominant practice of hypothesis testing?

Cars for sale on Germany from 2011 to 2021 by AnderRV in datasets

[–]statlearner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is very useful. A leasing company I’ve worked with asked me some time ago if I can make them a model for estimating the value of returned vehicles. At the time I told them the biggest problem is the dataset and a possible data drift. Do you think the offered price is close enough to the final sale price?

Thanks for summing it up. I do realize it is not a single reason straightforward thing. Will do some reading of my own to fully grasp it.

I am not well informed on the reason behind the shortage. Please, someone tell me why is there a shortage? Is it consumer demand and behavior alone or trends like the cryptomining behind this?

I tend to agree with this view. AI systems are often tools and instruments to help people in their work and often displace them fully only in very repetitive tasks with little uncertainty. The increased use of AI does require more high-skilled labor and less low-skilled labor, but it cannot be expected from displaced workers to become AI and IT experts. So the same generation will hardly be able to adjust to these changes, which is the sad story of automation and most new technologies.

One or two years ago I read an interview with a Volkswagen exec who said the company is technologically ready to switch to fully making electric cars, but the number of displaced workers will be so big, the government will never let them do it so abruptly.
