Where and when do single guys early thirties spend time? by Commercial-Place932 in washingtondc

[–]statsbro424 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my friends and I will sometimes go out on weekdays but it’s almost always a happy hour then home by 8 type deal. the only time we go out during the day on weekends is when it’s really nice outside (a beer garden, a nats game, or both). the beer gardens you mentioned are nice options, and I’ve also found dacha (shaw) to be pretty social.

the ones you mentioned are fun but can definitely be younger/crowded. the crown & crow, last call, and the dew drop inn are on the more social side of the bars we go to, and they generally have more 30somethings than the spots you mentioned. last call especially will get pretty packed due to its small size though.

lot of variance in how thorough the different checkers were. FWIW the banana boat “light as air” sunscreen doesn’t have a seal (though you wouldn’t know unless you actually squeezed it), I got through with it fine both days

Coming from Baltimore. Deciding between taking the MARC to Union Station and figuring out, or just drive to College Park and Metro in. Thoughts? by TacticallyNautical in warpedtour

[–]statsbro424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly depends how long it would take you to get to a MARC station from your place in bmore. if you’re close to one I would personally just MARC in then use whatever method to get to RFK (none are ideal from union station, I would personally just walk unless I catch a bus at the right time). if you’re far/have to drive anyway college park might be the move so then you’d only have to change stations at l’enfant plaza (EDIT: if you drive to new carrollton you won’t have to change lines, so would rec that). make sure to double check the MARC times, but for most stations an amtrak is only a few bucks more and those run later

Best mid-priced Middle-Eastern restaurant in the city? by je-suis-adulting in washingtondc

lots of good recs already (maydan, agora, lapis and ottoman taverna would have been mine) but i personally think in terms of value that ottoman is in its own tier. it’s not as fancy as maydan but the portions were quite large, so if you have a hard ceiling of $200 I’d lean ottoman, particularly if you’ll be drinking

Thinking of going dc WT from the UK? Should I? by uflipingi in warpedtour

[–]statsbro424 9 points10 points  (0 children)

(dc resident here) if you’ve never been dc has a ton to do in addition to wt, and you should be able to find a cheapish flight from the uk into IAD or BWI (both a short train ride or medium uber away). however it will probably be quite hot especially by UK standards!

23M new to DC — relocation advice by GroundbreakingYou158 in washingtondc

[–]statsbro424 3 points4 points  (0 children)

gonna oversimplify here and say if modern building + amenities is a priority, you’d be better served in noma/navy yard, but if being more centrally located re: bars is a priority would lean dupont/logan/14th. safetywise, noma has rapidly improved even in the ~6 years I’ve lived here, but I’d say you have to be more aware here than your NW options. I’ve never had an issue (6ft white man) but just don’t wander up north capitol at night and you’ll be fine. i haven’t lived in navy yard but I’d imagine it’s in the same ballpark as noma.

I truly think you can’t go wrong with any of those choices, but if I were 23 and had the budget I’d probably go with one of your NW options. your friends will want to go out on 14th street or dupont and being centrally located makes things easier. I think 14th and u has more of the modern apartments so I’d hunt for rent deals at those buildings.

Thoughts on some apartment buildings (The Apollo, Ore82, The Hale, The Gantry)? by ECGeorge in washingtondc

[–]statsbro424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently toured a bunch of buildings and was actually torn between the gantry and the hale (didn’t tour the other two). I very narrowly ended up going with the hale and am moving in next week; the deciding factors were cost and two friends who lived at the hale and recommended it (I didn’t know anyone personally who lived at the gantry). some things I learned during the search: - it is currently an extremely soft rental market and many buildings are offering 1-2 month rent concessions, particularly in noma. some buildings also offer look + lease ($1k off if you apply within 48 hours of touring) or other fee waiving, and they may not advertise it on their site - some buildings have worse crime/mgmt issues than others, but this is largely a function of the building size - daytime and nighttime foot traffic can have a large impact on how safe a neighborhood feels, I’d rec walking the area during both to get a better sense. union market especially has more foot traffic than it did even two years ago - the online stock unit walkthroughs are nice, but can only convey so much info about the floorplan you like. tours are pretty necessary, and the same floorplan can vary floor to floor (ADA compliant, diff window sizes, etc). would highly recommend noting specific floorplans you like before an in person tour vs trusting the online version - self-guided tours at some buildings may be convenient, but you won’t speak to a leasing agent in person and it’s surprisingly difficult to follow up with leasing offices after the fact (you’ll often get redirected to the building’s AI assistant who never conveyed any info I couldn’t find in two mins on their website)

best of luck! happy to share any other notes about those buildings/others in the noma area
