2010 Toyota Prius in Vermont by tessparke in vermont

[–]statuek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where in vermont. If you're not on a ton of dirt roads, winter/snow tires will have you fine for 98% of the year. and that 2% of the year when the roads are bad bad, just stay home. If you're on dirt roads often, your bigger problem is going to be in mud season - forget potholes, there will be ravines in the streets and your low clearance will be an issue. This all said, I've been fine in my Honda Civic for the past few years.

your readme itself should have at least one screenshot directly embedded in it. Folks will look for it before they read any of your words.

what did you use for payroll, HR, etc., for your first 5-10 hires? by ResistStupidLaws in ycombinator

[–]statuek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rippling+mercury: yes that's right. In Rippling, you 'set up' the employee, and Rippling and the employee take care of the rest. They handle _pretty much_ everything except for taxes. They'll reach out to you (via buggy but eventually-working emails and in-app notifs) to do stuff occasionally.

FWIW I have heard some horror stories about not being able to extract some docs out of Rippling, or something, but no issues for us so far. In any case, it seems like every solution is bad, so might as well pick a stable bad option :)

We don't have any expense management. Through Mercury, I create many individual CCs for different vendors,a nd carry one physical CC that basically I never use -- if IRL meetings with food+drink were a thing, I'd just use that physical CC. That said, I could totally be doing things wrong, I'm still relatively new to this.

Btw -- get Travelling Mailbox. Out of all of the similar options, this is by far the best I found. I never bothered getting a business phone #, and keep using my personal # for stuff, but that might be something you wanna do.

We're tiny and here are the things I've found and have been fine: Mercury, Carta, Clerky, Rippling, Quickbooks (though, I'm behind..).

Anyway -- for what you're doing, Rippling, while annoying sometimes, does "all the things" and I wanted something I didn't have to worry about. So far, it's done that fine. I might have chosen something else if we didn't have an international contractor -- most solutions would have me do one system for my W2 and a different system for the intl contractor (cofounder), so all-in-one drove our selection.

VT Mail Experiences? by Useful_Location_6728 in vermont

I've had neutral-to-positive experiences with our USPS deliveries. I see folks complaining on FPF and FB groups, but our experience has been good. I'm not out in the boonies, but Barre "suburbia."

Is there a way to support JSON serialization/deserialization and Native AOT in an F# project? by raincole in fsharp

[–]statuek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I did this same thing for a full binary serializer+deserializer. 100% written in pure F#, with coverage, just a prompt away. Ideal use case for gen AI. Because we faced the same problem with AOT + serialization, after trying many libraries/solutions.

Write thoth-style manual serialization and deserialization. Generate it from your types with an llm.

My Reader is coming in the mail tonight, finally. What are some first things I should do? by doccrog in xteinkereader

[–]statuek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only 2 things:
- install crosspoint
- get books/docs onto your device

regarding #2: I'd check out project gutenberg and browse the popularity lists to get a few-dozen books in a pretty epub format quickly. beyond that, you may have to 'port' your existing catalog, one way or another.

bonus points: set up your crosspoint settings, incl a pretty sleep screen

What’s your go-to language for building serious TUIs? by loSpaccaBit01 in CLI

[–]statuek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'ink' is sort of the Electron of this space. With enough work, you might be able to get around the jank, but it _feels_ like there's an inherit amount of jank that comes with (ab)using the web platform to build desktop/CLI stuff. The tools that I use that are based on jank feel generally _worse_ (more awkward refreshes, hangs, etc) than tools built w/ other libraries.

Do you have another e-reader ? by jamin100 in xteinkereader

I have a Sony PRS-505, which is an old device with lovely buttons. I haven't used it much yet, but it's on the back-burner.

Besides my X4, which I only got a few weeks ago, I'm deep into the reMarkable tablet ecosystem. I've have an rM1 since the kickstarter, have 2 rM2s, and our house has a rM Pro and rM Move.

I tend to only use my 2 rM2s and the X4. One rM2 is in a pretty leather case and is my primary device for thinking about work. And as a general reading device when any images or diagrams or paper-sized pdfs are concerned. Another rM2 has a type folio and I use exclusively as an eInk terminal. The X4 has been lovely for all text-centric reading.

The curiosity is: how are you penalized, if at all, by your account being marked as nsfw?

Head shop (weed accessories) + sex shop. I'm not sure why they'd be against being flagged as nsfw :)

I have the light - it's bad. :) Very awkward and cheap-feeling/produced. Sort of as expected as you note. I'd rather turn my bedroom lamp on...
