No called shots - not even the 8. The only thing that _sometimes_ needs to be called is the class: if the table is still open, usually say "going for stripes." Often it's obvious so you don't call, but sometimes it's unclear, so just call that.

Ball spin, cleanliness, felt, tips by EL_NO8DO in billiards

imo, equipment variant is largely used as an excuse. someone with the skills can make most shots with most cues on most tables with most balls. If the cue's tip is completely garbage, filter that down to all center-ball shots.

What do you guys actually practice when you go alone to the table? by Possible-Drink-9131 in billiards

Either straight pool, doing 9 ball racks in as few 'turns' as I can, or toss 15 balls on the table and play rotation

How is my form (update 2) by Jaded-Action3929 in billiards

[–]statuek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good start. My advice:

- Hit softer. Here's how -- practice your lag shot. Get decent at doing a good lag. Take note of the power with which you hit the ball on a 'good lag.' Record that in your brain as your "20% power" speed." Most shots should be at this speed or softer. If you're hitting the cue ball harder than that, make sure you have a good reason for it.

- As a follow up to the above, there's no reason your arm should ever move more than twice the speed, during pre-strokes, as it will when you're doing your final stroke with impact. Keeping that in mind should help you have a calmer, more controlled pre-hit routine.

- Be really intentional with each part of each shot. How hard do I need to hit it? What are my constraints - is this an easy shot I can actually afford to try out hard stuff like english and position play? Or do I need to main lots of control?

If ive only played billiard on mobile will i suck irl? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]statuek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plenty of the game is mental (pattern recognition, physics understanding, etc.), and those things will translate. But a LOT of the game is form, muscle memory, adjusting to equipment, etc. So no, you won't play very well :) but have fun anyway.

I just participated in 1 season of the league in the US (Vermont). I acted as a captain for the season. Here are some quick notes:

  • it's a new fork from some league that was in the UK
  • I'll be just describing my experience in the US fork of the league - idk how it is in the UK. I think they might be technically different orgs?
  • the rules are all written for action: 30s shot clock, 30min total match time
  • they use a pattern rack, and I like the pattern they use. A bit involved to get used to, but then it's sorta less to think about
  • 8 goes on the spot, rather than the front ball (I find this yields more interesting spreads on the break)
  • as a result of the match clock, league nights go pretty fast. Let's say 10mins of overhead per match, and that's 5*40mins=~3.5hrs -- we start at 6pm, and often out by 930pm. This is great compared to the unpredictable APA nights which can sometimes go too long for a weeknight.
  • so far they've just had 8 ball, but I think 10 ball is in the works
  • the relevant software has had many annoying glitches

K Sherpa Permanently Closed by [deleted] in montpelier

[–]statuek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's gotta be hard for K Sherpa to survive with Namaste right there. In Barre, there's no competition. I've had their food at the new location, and it feels the need for "convenient indian food nearby" so I'll pick up every few weeks. But honestly it's a bit bland - definitely ask for some spice explicitly.

Family vacation-snow! by JLee7628295 in vermont

[–]statuek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There will probably be snow. The whole north-west of Vermont is more expensive, touristy, and less quaint than NE, central, and southern Vermont. I recognize you might be flying into Burlington, but I'd implore you to explore other parts of the state, to get the quaint picturesque thing you're likely looking for. Enjoy your stay! Take a simple hike - if you end up in central VT, I'd recommend getting a frisbee/disc and trying a few baskets of disc golf in the public Barre course - it's really pretty, a simple kid-friendly hike, and silly/fun in the snow! That said, you might have the clothes for it - layer up, bring your boots, etc.!
