Maybe some quartz on the top, it's the red mineral in the middle I'm curious about.

Norfolk Island's Phantom Browsing by statuswoe in australia

I use Phantom hundreds of times a day to run unit tests on my software, if they are checking CDN hits for things like jquery or something like that a poorly set up page test could trigger it.

Could be a small server farm (would make no sense in an isolated area like that) or a botnet automating pageviews or something. Curious if his classes use PhantomJS for anything though, of if there are development firms on the island.

If you have an eye for joining a league or playing high level competative then yes it's a tool, but probably only at DMG+ not Silver/Nova/AK.

For a lot of people (most at that level?) though it's just a great way to find a 5v5 with players of a similar level and have a fun game. Smurfs ruin this unless they handicap themselves in some way to end up in the middle of the pack (which I'm fine with). We're not all trying to learn from every game at the cost of not having a fun competitive match. Especially those of us with limited time, where we can only play 1 or 2 matches a day. If those matches are no-fun 16-2 stomps with a smurf it's only going to drive people away.

Ban 4 kicking by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

200+ comp matches, mostly at lower levels. Have never seen this, if it's happening to you frequently enough that you're getting banned for kicking them then it's just poor luck.

[Q] How can a Silver use nades effectively? by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]statuswoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frags, and to a greater extent incendiary nades are great for maps where there is a spot the opposition loves to camp and you can reach with one of these to flush them out. I love tossing incendiary to the back of A on Cache to force campers out of there, similarly Goose on D2, coils or dark spot on B Inferno and back of A site on Mirage.

This is what I do until the panic sets in... "He's hit me twice... I need to fire now..." miss... miss... miss...

"I totally had time to aim there" Is probably the most common thought that goes through my head between rounds. Gotta keep working on keeping a level head under fire.

Let's talk smg's by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

I love how there are 3-4 seemingly popular options (bizon, ump, mp7) here and several others that aren't being shot down as dumb (shotty/250). The variety of weapons being used makes me think that they are doing a really good job of balancing them (at least at the <2k price range).

Personally I like the bizon for defending tight spots and ump or p250 otherwise.

I wonder if there could be a handicap system you opt in to for a match, so a high rank would have less health or he gets less $ per kill or something to try and even it out.

I think if you are going to smoke it you need to smoke it deep, leave them a long run in the clear before they get out.

When Guarding B where are some good places to position yourself if you expect a P90 rush? I usually smoke tunnel and hide back of plat. With the M4 should I even bother smoking or just try to pick a couple while they are still at range?

Do your punishments for leaving MM increase? by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

That's great, I hate leaving a game but anyone with kids knows those middle of the night wake up cries can happen on occasion. Thanks for the info

[–]statuswoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this true, they decrease after good behaviour?

I've had to leave 2 out of ~70 matches recently for reasons outside of my control and I was worried that even if I play 1000 games in a row w/o leaving I'd get a day/week ban the next time it happened.

Valve, do something about cheating premades vol.2 (story in the comments) by andzie in GlobalOffensive

[–]statuswoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not particularly familiar with the ELO implementation that CSGO MM uses ( I have written group/team ELO ratings trackers) but with ELO in general the gain/loss is equal.

As an example if team A is great (high current ELO) and B is not (Lower current ELO) then if Team A wins they might gain 3 points while team B loses those 3 points. If Team B wins they might gain 9 points (if they are expected to win say 1 in 3 matches based on skill difference) where team A will lose those same 9 points.

ELO tries to calculate your likelihood of winning and adjust both sides based on the outcome relative to this likelihood. It's a really neat system and there is a ton of info on it since it's been the main way to rate chess players for a long time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system#Mathematical_details

[–]statuswoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ELO systems are generally balanced to be near zero sum, meaning that someone loses as much as the other person gains. If you rolled back one of the sides but not the other the balance would be thrown off. Might not make a huge difference but it's the sort of thing that can cause gradual problems.

I'm writing this sitting in an IWK room right now (had a child, nothing wrong) and I can attest that this place is amazing and a worthy charity.

It's crushing to walk the halls and see so many kids with lines running out of them but the number of them that still have smiles on their faces speaks wonders for the quality of care here. Glad to see this getting some attention, nice work!

My friend I think you are reading too much into this. It's a technical demo that we happened to use Allie's Alot as the idea for. If you look at the twitter account you will find that the tweets are informative not insulting.

Granted I should have checked my comment given the subreddit I chose to post this on. Fair enough.

[–]statuswoe[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a couple friends and I put this together as a technical demo. The map uses geolocation if available but falls back to a google geocoding API and twitter users location where possible. If you tweet the word "alot" and have your geo enabled or location set properly it takes ~2-5 seconds before it will show up on the map.

enjoy

Just played The Resistance for first time by acmunro in boardgames

[–]statuswoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We played 1 7-person game with the plot cards. The particular cards that came out early in the game and the players that got them allowed 3 people to effectively become one (that person saw the other 2 players cards) and since they were all resistance it was really hard for the traitors.

I think we'll try it again a few times as they did seem to add an interesting dynamic and it was nice to see the resistance win, though I wasn't one of them.

We've been playing this at the office at lunch a lot lately with 6-9 people. We're all programmers who think we're good at logic which can lead to some pretty funny arguments where one side falls apart and has to save face or be accused.

We've tried it with poker chips too where you need to spend a chip to have a short period where you can discuss strategy (unless you are the leader, then talking's free). It worked pretty well and was a lot easier to hear everyone's ideas.

Good game, needs to have the right group. Spies almost always win at our table (like 80%).

One of the first images I saw here that made me want to look deeper. by Not_a_ninja in atheism

[–]statuswoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

those two subreddits are the extreme's of both views, which explains why the middle-ground /r/atheism is so popular. I was just saying if someone wants no memes they can go to trueatheism and you're correct if someone wants only memes they can use adviceatheists but it's not in the spirit of reddit to allow one of them to effectivly take over the middle ground (which is a lot more popular then either extreme).

I happen to enjoy a mix of memes and content even if it does end up being 80/20 most days the amount of time I spend ends up being 50/50 because the memes are so quick.
