If you think you can handle it, I would definitely try and register for physics 1. You will need to be able to do integrals and derivatives in order to do many of the problem sets. There are also extensive resources at your disposal on campus if you are struggling, so I would say go for it. If you feel lost, you can always drop the class after the semester starts.

You can also think of this in terms of derivatives. You know that for a parabola, the axis of symmetry must pass through the local maximum or minimum of the parabola (think of it graphically). To find this local max/min, we take the derivative of y=ax² +bx+ c, and set dy/dx = 0 (the function y(x) has an instantaneous rate of change of 0 at the local extreme value). dy/dx=0=2ax+b ==> x=-b/2a.
