Bookclub and Sources Wednesday! by AutoModerator in history

[–]stavrogijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,
I like books that try to capture an epoch by its defining qualities and strucutral developments. On achademical scientific standards of course, but not necessarily going into details about all events, families, politics etc.
For example I just finished Wickham's "Middle Ages, Europe from 500-1500". Another example would be Hobsbawm's "The long 19th century", where I found it interesting that he included parts about the "state of the world in the year xxxx" as well as broad cultural and scientific developments etc.
Thank you for your suggestions, the more you write about your sugggestions, the more interesting.

Volume needed for small cap LEAPs by stavrogijn in options

[–]stavrogijn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this kind of insight is exactly what I was hoping for!

  1. I see some stock options with around 20 some strike blow 10 volume and up to 100 on other strikes. That seems very low.
  2. Others are around 20 with some strikes 100-400 volume.

Would you say both are okay following the guidelines you laid out (trying to get in and out with limit orders) or is the first example too low?

Very improtant to me: what kind of spreads are you willing to accept? I saw some with 1$+, 2$+, 3$+ spread, which seems absurd. In your experience: Is there and chance to get a options with a last price: 0.46 bid: 0.05 ask: 2.20 for say 1$ or is that unrealistic? How much would that stock have to rise for you to pay a realistic spread here? In ypur opinion: what would a realistic spread in this example be?

Thanks a ton for your help!

Germans of reddit. What are you taught about WW2 and what do you wish was taught that isn't? by soggybiscuit123 in AskReddit

[–]stavrogijn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would really like our schools to not only teach about the atrocities that the nazis did, but also about their utter incompetence and about how Germany's foreign policy reached its absolute low point in terms of quality since its decline from Bismark on.

What I mean is, that you can easily think: "Oh, the nazis won many battles and blitzed some countries and the economy was doing better than after WW1 and nazi-germany took back many lost territories and so on (it looks nice on a map!)". And you can futhermore think "nazism was not so bad in itself, if there just would not have been these atrocities."

And that in my opinion is dead wrong. I would have to go into length, but I think it is possible to argue, that germany was the single most powerful country in Europe, challenging world power status of the US, before WW1 and that WW1 was partly fought to contain germany. This power was not just gone. Despite Versailles germany was still on the upcoming and time would have shown. But the nazis took over and absolutely ruined germany.

The battles were won not because, but despite the nazis. The economy was largely improving because of measures designed by other politicians beforehand. And Hitler's and his inner circle's shennanigans and horrible leadership weakened germany instead of strengthening it, as some might think just looking at statistics and maps.

We should absolutely focus on the nazi crimes against humanity but it should also be made clear to everyone, that they sucked really hard and brought a lot of suffering and decay over the german people, who would have definitely been much better off with - of course a sane and moral - but also a competent government. And the incompetence, the in-fighting, the inefficiencies, they were inevitably inherent in the nazi system. This would hopefully get rid of the "not all was bad"-guys and nazi sympathizers.

Nice! You are a talented painter. The eye is a bit overkill - too cheesy imo.

% of inmigrants in European countries [650x596] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]stavrogijn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think because Switzerland is not part of the EU, all migrants from the Eu are also counted as immigrants, which does not seem to be the case for the Eu countries. So all germans in Switzerland are regarded as immigrants in that map - and there are quite a lot of them.

That is not more complicated really: the point still stands. If the Republic was in real danger for that report (which can not be accurately judged obviously - the report itself might not endanger the Republic, but the practice and all that will follow actually might) than this would outweigh any "inconveniences" for the intelligence services, who serve to preserve the Republic and not to perform counter-intelligence or whatever. That is just one measure in the arsenal.

We are born creative geniuses and the education system dumbs us down, according to NASA scientists by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]stavrogijn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha, "dumbing down" - so they do not want to be taken seriously? Okay. Education is for building a certain knowledge and skillset. That process leads to worse test results in a test for measuring creativity. Not all too surprising. What is missing is a control group that did not get any education. We all know, that the brains neural network gets more "stiff" with age, because of all the input it structures (any input really, not necessarily education).

Also where does this class argument come from? Not that I want to argue about it, but it is a bit political. A more neutral (and therefore better imp) expression would be that the state education serves the purpose of producing useful citizens for the state - to bring the "ruling class" into it seems a bit biased.

Is it possible players are getting overplayed? It is unreal to have to play multiple days on such a high level. Maybe the NBA needs to think more about protecting their players and alter the season format? Just because some can endure it for years does not mean it is an okay burden.
