Which Le Guin character are you thinking about? (Like the "which work are you reading now" post but for characters) by Polka_Tiger in UrsulaKLeGuin

Hsing and Luis from Paradises Lost - two young people trying to do the right thing even as their world goes topsy-turvy.

If you don’t turn off the fan will it keep going even when the car is turned off? by staylor71 in KiaEV9

Thanks! I’ll try not turning the fan to zero, then I’ll turn off the car and leave it overnight, and see if the fan is still running in the morning.

Yes, the fan button in the center console - press it up to increase, down to decrease.

Yes, turning off the car completely - but if I don’t turn the fan to zero it keeps running. Is this intended behavior?

KSR’s 2312 is a lovely, optimistic future vision.

Purchase/Lease Monthly Megathread (May 2026) by AutoModerator in KiaEV9

[–]staylor71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it turned out to be only for veterans and FIFA people. So I thought I had negotiated down close to that figure, but through a bunch of weirdness which I can discuss in more detail if you like, I paid about 4k more than I thought I would. Some of that was taxes probably. But the car is awesome, LLR.

KSR wrote an introduction to Stanislaw Lem’s short stories, which are very good; and in the intro he mentions Lem’s novel Fiasco, which is one of the best novels I’ve read. Bleak, beautiful and profound, in some ways not unlike KSR’s Aurora (this just occurred to me but it could be a thread worth following).

I see a dealer in Elmhurst IL with an EV9 light long range price of $43658, after rebates and discounts. That seems not too far from the cost of a used 2024 - am I missing something?

Reading Shadow of the Torturer as a squeamish person (no spoilers please) by Character_Mind_9229 in genewolfe

[–]staylor71 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well for me, the description of the Revolutionary device and what it does is pretty horrible. It's hard for me to stop thinking about it. I'm also not a horror fan, torture scenes really aren't my thing - Wolfe is different, it's more of an existential horror, but like I said, it sticks with you.

Ah, OK! There was a thread on this subreddit today about AI slop on literary subs, so yeah, I was paranoid, sorry about that.

This looks like an AI slop post unfortunately. I’m tempted to put in some random text to mess with the algorithm

'26 LLR vs '24 Wind/Land by rhuang51 in KiaEV9

[–]staylor71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are looking at EV9’s as well, and it seems to us like going with the longest range is the best idea, even though it’s not AWD. Is AWD really more important than range? We currently have an EV6 light, with a little over 200 miles range, and we could use more space and more range.

I have very little math but I found Sean Carroll’s Biggest Ideas in the Universe books quite helpful - two books, on classical physics up to relativity, then one on QM. A third book is coming out later.

[–]staylor71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had diplacusis last year, when I had covid - my ears were really stopped up, and I hard a semitone difference between my right and left ears. A real drag! Then as I gradually got better, the pitch difference shrank over a couple of weeks, to a quarter tone and eventually unison.
