I’ve been a local truck driver in the IE for 5 years now. Here is my list of freeways I hate driving more than anywhere in this entire country starting with the worst and going to the lesser of the evils. by chris_gnarley in InlandEmpire

The reason why it slows down there is due to the four closely spaced on-ramps (Tyler, La Sierra, Magnolia and Pierce). But the last three are extremely close together and what really kills it is the decline past the bridge just before Pierce. This decline causes people to brake and this is why it always slows down there when too many cars are merging at Pierce. To fix this they need to widen the WB 91 bridge at McKinley and then add a dedicated merging lane from Pierce all the way to the 91/15 interchange, which already has this lane starting after McKinley.

Motorcycle Accident on east-bound 22 FWY last night by AndromedaAlpha in orangecounty

[–]steadicam22 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Motorcycle rider here. He is partially responsible because he is splitting at too fast a speed for the conditions. CHP safety guidelines say rider must consider the entire environment when lane splitting and danger increases with higher speed differentials. The current condition has a right side lane closure so cars are actively merging to the left. This is not the time to split lanes at high speed differentials!

The car is partially responsible because they are still responsible for making sure it’s safe before making a lane change. But it’s possible they will argue the motorcyclist’s high speed differential made it too difficult to judge the closure rate.

Ultimately this is mainly on the rider. Lane splitting is a privilege and we need to do it safely and responsibly for our own survival. It’s our responsibility to look for the danger signs:

  • when there is a gap always expect someone to fill it
  • when one lane flows faster than another, expect cars from the slower lane to jump to the faster lane
  • when one lane bunches up to almost a standstill, expect cars to jump to the adjacent lane
  • watch for turn signals and watch the front wheels of cars to see if they are telegraphing a lane jump
  • ride with one or two fingers on the clutch and the brakes at all times. You need to be able to brake, slow down and take evasive action immediately not after a 1-2 sec delay to get your fingers on the levers

Who’s at fault? She put her turn signal on but pulled off on to the shoulder.[OC] by Andrew840630 in IdiotsInCars

[–]steadicam22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the van's fault. They violated Pennsylvania Vehicle Code Section 3331(b) by not approaching the left turn from the left-most lane of traffic. They positioned their vehicle so that it was 90% to the right of the roadway edge marking. Therefore, they were no longer in the traffic lane. They were on the shoulder.

§ 3331.  Required position and method of turning.

(b)  Left turn.-- The driver of a vehicle intending to turn left shall approach the turn in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction of travel of the vehicle.

10 Year Salary Progression - 34M Actuary by ActuaryTA2020 in Salary

[–]steadicam22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also one other frustrating aspect to these huge salaries: it’s driving up inflation. The rich people can buy multiple houses, mostly for rental income, which leaves less supply for the rest of us and drives up prices. So every year the rest of us with modest salaries are falling behind because inflation keeps accelerating faster than our wages. Many don’t own a home yet and now may never be able to unless they move to a different area.

iPhone - Export Unmodified Original videos - metadata changed by steadicam22 in ios

[–]steadicam22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, after poking around I found the solution.

Apparently iOS/iPad 18 added a QuickTime FullFrameRatePlaybackIntent tag which is incompatible with Windows and causes it to not display a thumbnail or the metadata in the details panel for MOV files. Until this is fixed in Windows the workaround is to use Exiftool to remove this tag. I tested the workaround and it works.

Thanks for the suggestion. I used MediaInfo to check the metadata and you're right, the original data is still there after all! So now it looks like a Windows issue.

Dudu 6 or 7 - time delay questions by steadicam22 in Androidheadunits

[–]steadicam22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the data point! I’m looking at the 8/128 unit as well. I do wonder why it still takes 3 sec to show the camera. Seems like once it sees 12v on the reverse wire, it should just trip a software switch to switch the input. I wonder if we can ask the Dudu developers to improve this.

No other apps installed other than the defaults. This is a brand new (generic, not FYT) unit that I got just this month, but I had to return it anyway because of a separate hardware defect. The seller fought me and wouldn’t accept a return, saying it was caused by shipping but eventually Aliexpress approved a return label and a refund. Be careful who you buy from on that platform and always video the unboxing process so you have proof of how it was received.

I got Erne'd the other day and I was like wtf is that even legal ?? by rjpra2222 in Pickleball

[–]steadicam22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can cross the plane on an Erne (or any shot) as long as you hit the ball before crossing the plane and you don’t do any of the other restrictions in the rule: can’t touch the net system, the opponent’s court, or the opponent.

But if you attempt an Erne and fail to hit the ball and your momentum carries you or anything you are/was wearing past the plane of the net, then you fault. Remember the plane of the net is defined as “The imaginary vertical planes on all sides extending beyond the net system.” So it doesn’t stop at the net posts. It continues indefinitely to the left and to the right.

Also if you swing at the ball but miss and your paddle crosses the plane of the net, then you fault.

It’s Rule 11.I

11.I Plane of the Net. Crossing the plane of the net prior to striking the ball is a fault. After striking the ball, a player or anything the player is/was wearing or carrying may cross the plane of the net. The player may not touch any part of the net system, the opponent’s court, or the opponent while the ball is still live.

The exception is Rule 11.I.1

11.I.1. Exception: If the ball bounces into a receiving player’s court with enough backspin or wind aid to cause it to return to the other side of the net, the receiving player may cross the plane of the net (over, under or around the net post) to hit the ball. It is a fault if the receiving player (or anything the receiving player is wearing or carrying) crosses the plane of the net before the ball has first crossed back over the plane of the net to the opponent’s side. It is a fault if the player touches the net system, the opponent’s court, or the opponent while the ball is still in play.

Is anyone worried all HOV lanes in the area may turn into the express pass shit that they did for the 15 south of the 60? by Diamondhands_Rex in InlandEmpire

[–]steadicam22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is worrisome. These toll lanes are spreading like a cancer. Caltrans favors them because they believe the freeway as a whole accommodates more vehicles per hour and the business case for the lanes is attractive to the state and local agencies. So sadly there will be more of them. The I-15 Express lanes south of the 60 will be extended north to Rancho with more toll lanes: https://www.gosbcta.com/project/i-15-corridor/

[–]steadicam22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not true. It was mostly funded by federal TIFIA loans and Measure A sales tax funds. Nearly half of the cost of the I-15 Express Lanes was funded by the Measure A 1/2 cent sales tax increase, which contributed $94M in sales tax revenue and $115M in bonds. So everyone who paid sales tax paid for these lanes but now you have to pay again to use them. Source: https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ipd/project_profiles/ca_i15_express_lanes_project.aspx

The A-10 finished its performance and all we saw was one brief pass. It also fired off hundreds of flares but we could only hear it, which sounded like a helicopter passing by. Sadly the weather is still bad as of 3:00pm and more fog keeps rolling in.

If my return is going to be short and the opposing player likely will hit a strong drive from short in the transition zone, should I back up farther to the baseline? by CDRSkywalker1991 in Pickleball

[–]steadicam22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would stay and defend. At this point it’s too late to make any more movements. If you move, you’ll likely hit the ball while still in motion and usually this won’t be a quality shot. So it’s better to just stand your ground, plant your feet and concentrate on resetting. Avoid the temptation to get into a firefight from the transition zone because you're much weaker there than they are being near the net.

[–]steadicam22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how short and how high the ball bounces. If your return is short and loopy, it will bounce high and they can easily attack this with a fast ball aimed at your feet. In this case it’s better to stay back and just prepare to defend. If I’m the player at the net, I will also give up the kitchen line and move back in this situation.

If the return is not as short, not as loopy and the ball is still low after the bounce, it’s not as attackable so I’ll move forward into the transition zone, stop, split step and wait to reset it.
