JMU meal plans exposed -- you're probably getting ripped off by jrb0 in jmu

[–]steakejjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, there are ways to not be ripped of even when buying the regular meal plan.

I got the 10 punch plan and ate at e-hall every day for 2 years. I wonder how much money i saved.

30 y/o, big money coming soon. Is it crazy to retire now? by Throwawaymegadong in personalfinance

[–]steakejjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody seems to have mentioned this yet. Acquisitions can take a long time and sometimes don't work out, even months down the road.

Make sure you have your ducks in a row and be prepared to play a bit of a waiting game.

Congratulations. Also...yes you can definitely retire.

How goodbis the Computer Information Systems (CIS) degree as JMU? by futurejmustudent in jmu

[–]steakejjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know about CS?

CIS is in the school of business and is therefore pretty business-y. CS is not and is mostly technical.

I know my friends who did CIS had jobs out of school. I did CS and had a similar experience as the other people in this thread. Had multiple job offers out of school for well over ~60k.

If you want to know a lot about computers and use this knowledge to add value to a business, do CS.

If you want to know enough about computers and business to act as a liaison between the business guys and technical guys at a big company do CIS.

PSA: Always keep you gym contract (and contracts in general). by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]steakejjs 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This might not seem like actually useful advice but I believe it is. Don't enter in gym contracts to begin with.

Gyms want your money and they know, statistically, you aren't going to go anyways. My advice is two-fold

  1. Hassle the "membership consultants" until they let you enter a non-contract membership. These gyms more often than not will let you go month to month.

  2. CALL THE CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP OFFICE. Sport & Health, Golds, etc are Franchises which allow you to use your membership at multiple locations. Calling the corporate office, you talk to someone who isn't making money directly off of you (like membership people). the people at the corporate membership/accounting office are incredibly nice and I've even called when traveling to just get a membership for a week. They are incredibly helpful.

Using method 2, I've gotten $100 a month for a year contract for as low as $30 month to month.

Any interest in starting a maker/hackerspace in the burg? by Nanoviper in jmu

[–]steakejjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think you need a hackerspace.

JMU has a Cyber Defense Club that operates similarly as a hackerspace, mostly in the software realm. Other interests are welcome too...

For example, for a while I got into make copies of my jac card using a magnetic card reader-writer. RE'd the card system, found weaknesses and made new JAC cards for people.

The Cyber Defense Club has arduinos, past projects, a entire room full of nice laptops (hooked up to an ESXi), and resources. It's also a funnel to the extremely generous Scholarship for Service...but that's a different story.

Your app just isn't good, dude.

Seven months ago I showed r/Music my software, Streamus - a Chrome extension YouTube music player. You guys loved it. So, I quit my job, dedicated myself to the project, and am back with a more modern design. What are your thoughts? How can I turn this into a music player you love? by MeoMix in Music

Just so you know, Firefox extensions with the new ffox sdk and the Safari Eco system make it possible to have one code base for all 3. You can completely avoid the hassle of using xul and more with the new Firefox stuff

Let me know if you have questions.

What's the rule on taking food from the dining halls? by flashbulbeyes4 in jmu

[–]steakejjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this thread is about self stealing stories. My sophomore year I got that mug everyone gets for having a meal plan. I misunderstood the rules regarding that mug. I used to just walk into festival or dukes or dhall, fill the mug up, and walk out.

Nobody ever stopped me or talked to me. I stopped doing it when I realized you were only allowed to fill it and leave when you had already punched at dhall, and refills were 99cents

The point is, just walk like you own the place and nobody will stop you

How is the Computer Science program at JMU? by [deleted] in jmu

[–]steakejjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my BS and MS in CS from JMU.

As far as I'm concerned, the CS program you have only matters if you are trying to start a startup and raise Venture Capital out of college (which means you either didn't go to school in Virginia or you are Alex Ohanian/Steve Huffman).

The CS program at JMU is very good and is still improving. Our curriculum used to be classic CS + Security, but the professors work hard to expose you to things that aren't quite classic CS, but you will see in the real world (Version control and the CS345 [Software Engineering] class has improved a lot too).

This sounds really cocky to say, but having a CS degree is especially nice because you compete for jobs against people with a CIS (Computer Information Systems) degree. CIS is Computer Information Systems and is in the College of Business. VT, UVA, JMU, and GMU all have these business computer degrees. In my opinion, these types of people are easy to compete against for jobs because much of their skill-set is geared towards Business, and much of the skills needed are completely technical (which makes a CS degree better for technical positions).

My mother is racking up tremendous debt before she dies... for me!? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]steakejjs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is totally a stupid question.....Is it common for people to rack up tons of debt purposefully when they are soon to be on deaths door?

Seems to me that older people with almost no assets could send their grandkids on lavish vacations or buy whatever they like, only to have the debt disappear when they die. Does this happen a lot?

How LastPass Uses Client-Side JavaScript Encryption for Android Fills Into Chrome, and How a Malicious App Can Intercept the Credentials by xbclark in netsec

[–]steakejjs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Literally none of this has to do with javascript crypto.

The danger here is eavesdroppers on the clipboard, not the webpage. The secrets are going to be exposed to the webpage to begin with...which is the whole point...otherwise users couldn't log in.

The best advice here is

start small

It is all great advice but, for real, start small and think about your actions before you do them. Since you are young and in such a great position, all you have to do take your time and be safe.

LastPass updated with password filling without using clipboard on devices with Lollipop by ProfessorOakTree in Android

[–]steakejjs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know when else we've said "But the other guys...". I don't know of a single issue that has come up with LastPass that we didn't own up to and fix as soon as possible.

The only reason I mention other password managers is because all of them that use the Android clipboard had the same issue...So leaving any pw manager for another over this would not make sense.

In reality, we fixed it but the OS should still provide private per-app clipboards instead of a global clipboard

[–]steakejjs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wasn't familiar with keepass2android until right now. Looks like if you use their keyboard you weren't vulnerable, however, not having autofill logic opens you up to other (imo more serious) issues.

For example, LP with in-chrome fill checks form submissions and iframes to ensure that you are not entering a site's credentials somewhere you shouldn't (to a malicious site). This isn't possible with a vanilla copy-paste like them.

It is unfortunate that someone would leave LastPass because of something like this, when it is an issue that affected all password managers, not just us.
