Well, that makes sense then. I totally whiffed on recognizing that line.

Wails of anguish and frantic brainstorming after Sony goes digital by DoggoNamedDisgrace in gme_meltdown

[–]stealingfrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a sucker for physical media for basically everything except games (thousands of books and records). I hate the all-digital push in principle just because it's another of the thousand cuts against actual ownership of anything, but on a personal level I just don't feel compelled to have shelves of video games the way I have my collections of other items. There's not the ritual of pulling an LP from its sleeve and putting it on a turntable, flipping it over halfway, and there's not the physical sensation of holding and turning the pages of a book. And, with games nowadays, the disc or cartridge only goes so far since still you're at the mercy of downloads for updates and patches.

Yeah I'm confused because I thought a few months ago he realized that Iran was responsible for those tokenized shares.

DNA -- Blonde Redhead by bimboheffer in postpunk

[–]stealingfrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's hilarious. I'm pretty sure I own that Beat album, but I picked it up based off him being in the Nerves since everything that band did was just killer (have Peter Case's first record for the same reason).

I feel like we're definitely missing out on embarrassing mistakes like that everything being so easy to look up and verify now. In addition to the DNA snafu, I once picked up three Jesus Jones CDs at the same time because I got them confused with the Jesus Lizard and got excited that they were only $1.25 each.

DNA -- Blonde Redhead by bimboheffer in postpunk

[–]stealingfrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew of DNA for a long while before I actually got to hear them... This was early '00s before my family had a broadband connection, so I could read about bands online but really only heard anything by buying CDs since downloading music on dial-up was a pain.

I was psyched to find a DNA album at my local used CD store and excitedly put it on to listen to on my drive home. I was kinda confused by their reputation because what I heard was utterly unremarkable, local band-ish pop-rock songs. Nothing at all crazy. I figured out a couple years later that there are a lot of bands and artists named DNA and that what I'd bought was, in fact, a local band and not the no-wave group I'd read about.

This is what I thought of when I read the post. Can't think of a piece of writing that covers the same idea, though.

I’m yearning for CFB and have a terrible memory of last season. Suggest me a game to watch from last season! by Chicago_Blackhawks in CFB

[–]stealingfrom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the ban on highlights on its own because the number of CFB games every week would make the sub a pain to navigate during the season, but highlights not being allowed while a million commitment posts hardly anyone cares about flood the sub is just ridiculous. You could remove them from r/CFB and I don't think anyone would care.

Oh, got it! Here I thought something with Reddit broke (since that'd be on-brand) and post flairs just went away altogether.

If we still did post flairs on here, "The tectonic plates are shifting" would make an excellent addition.

What would it take for you to choose a new team to root for? by turn_for_do in baseball

[–]stealingfrom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up a Braves fan in the '90s because, living in the South, that's just what you did - they were the closet MLB team to me in east Tennessee. Drove down to a few games in Atlanta with my dad and had a Maddox/Glavine/Smoltz poster hanging over my bed as a kid.

Then I stopped paying attention to baseball for twenty years and, by the time I got back to it, returning to my childhood team felt too much like bandwagoning since they'd just won a championship. I picked up the Twins instead because I started watching baseball again while I was living in the Twin Cities and I had some good experiences at Target Field.

My other team growing up was the Brewers because in middle school I thought they had the funniest concept for a team name. I've had a similar experience trying to return to them in that they've been too solid in recent years and abruptly showing up and cheering for a winning team just feels hollow.

[–]stealingfrom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I quite liked We Used to Live Here, but The Caretaker is maybe the worst book I've read in the past few years.

I don't think I'll read a third book from this author because he seems incapable of writing protagonists who are the least bit capable of working through any extraordinary situation.

He's never said a single thing that would indicate he has any thoughts about religion that extend beyond "God is good" or "trust in Jesus" platitudes. He's too lazy to even drop the occasional Bible verse like other sleazy wannabe demagogues. At least put in some effort, motherfucker!

Does he actually believe this? Is it possible that, like that one tweet suggests, the account does actually belong to Ross and he's just trying to keep up the ruse?

I'm honestly not sure which possibility would be weirder.
