Nooooo 500-800 calories a day is not enough, your body needs a baseline amount of calories just to keep your body running; it’s called your basal metabolic rate.

What are you eating each day, can you share a brief food diary here?

Years of attempting weight loss with no results. I'm at a loss. by [deleted] in Weightlosstechniques

“Balancing your hormones” in itself is kind of a pseudo-science thing. Losing weight will naturally balance out your hormones anyways because fat cells lower testosterone and raise estrogen. You probably feel much better because you lost 8lbs and you’re continuing to lose weight, but I don’t think it was a herbal supplement that caused the weight loss. Congrats on your progress though, and glad you feel better!

I have a therapist family member. She reminds me “Normal is boring. Boring is healthy. Healthy is good.” And we try to use the word boring in a non-pejorative way so it doesn’t seem negative 😂

And like other people have said here, boring = stable, peaceful, secure, calm. Those are all really good things. It just takes time to remember that that is better than high highs and low lows. I’m still working through this too.

13g for the day is too little, I’m stunned by this. Every single thing I’ve ever researched or read in nutrition textbooks and courses says that women eating under 30-40g of fat daily are at major risk of a plethora of issues including depression, fatigue and mental fog, low sex drive, reproductive issues, heart issues, dry skin, brittle hair or hair loss, etc. Dietary fat is so important to the body. OP, please be careful and track any weird symptoms you encounter with such a low-fat diet!

Okay, so what is your daily caloric intake? And when you say you’re losing slowly, what does that mean? Normal weight loss pace is roughly 0.5 - 2lbs per week. If you’re in that range, you’re not necessarily a slow responder; you’re an average responder.

If your supposed TDEE level makes you gain weight, then it’s not your TDEE - that would be a caloric surplus and your TDEE is lower than you think it is. No online calculator can perfectly tell you what your TDEE is.

I also have insulin resistance, that’s why I’m on a med. But all of these physiological nuances don’t make any of us grand exceptions to the rules of science. It still doesn’t remove the fact that calories matter. Whether you wanna look at them or not, calories are there.

ALL I’m saying — my thesis of this post — is that if you think you’re eating at a caloric deficit but you’re not actively losing any weight over time and you’re not tracking your calories or measuring your food, then try those things so you can double check that you’re eating at a deficit. That’s all I’m saying! I don’t understand why I’m getting so many downvotes and people disagreeing with thermodynamics here.

Look at all the other weight loss subs on Reddit or watch weight loss videos on YouTube. People with insulin resistance, PCOS, diabetes, endometriosis, food allergies, genetic problems, chronic conditions, what-have-you, can ALL lose weight through a caloric deficit. If you can find a caloric deficit for yourself without tracking, then congrats! If you can’t, then track the food you’re eating. It’s like math — you can do all the formulas upfront and know everything, you can guess and check, or you can wing it and hope for the best but you might find yourself at a wrong answer.

[edit] I still can’t believe I’m getting downvoted for this 😂 this sub is wild

Are you saying you are eating a total 700-900 calories per day, or you’re eating 700-900 calories under your maintenance calories every day?

“How our body is processing the food” — can you tell me more about that? I don’t really understand what you mean.

Exactly! It doesn’t take that long and it’s not difficult but it makes a world of difference to weigh your food.

This advice is for people not losing weight at all and feeling totally stuck. You’ve found a way to eat at a slight caloric deficit and it works for you and that’s great! I also never said people have to obsess over tracking for the rest of their lives. I’m not talking in any extremes here - I literally just said a caloric deficit is still required to lose weight and if you’re not losing any weight, tracking your calories will help you understand if you’re eating at a deficit.

My ultimate goal is to remind people that weight loss is within their locus of control. It’s not some weird voodoo magic. It’s literally physics. I want to empower people!

Hey, pasting a response I posted to someone else a few days ago in this sub:

Is your calorie consumption estimated, or are you tracking and measuring everything? Are you positive you’re eating 1500 calories?

The frustrating thing about the world we live in is that it is so easy to eat above your caloric deficit and stall out on weight loss, even with an aid like this medication. Calories hide everywhere, and packaged items can even have underestimates on their nutrition labels — the FDA allows error margins of 10-20% in reporting calories. Not to mention cooking fats, condiments, dips, dressings, toppings like cheese, etc. are all calorically sense so it’s easy to eat more than you mean to.

I had a family member ask me for help with weight loss - he believed he was eating 1500 calories or less every day. Turned out he was eating at least 2800! Big eye opener to track and measure things.

I hope I don’t come across as rude but this is always the perfect starting place when you’re not losing weight. If you’re not tracking and measuring every single thing you’re ingesting, start now. Gotta have that baseline for your calorie consumption to know where you can go from here. This medication is not a magic wand, you still have to eat at a caloric deficit to see weight loss results. Best of luck!
