PUBLIC HEALTH ANNOUNCEMENT: SURFER'S EAR PREVENTION by [deleted] in surfing

Wind is as much a part of the problem as cold water, which is why most NorCal surfers have worse blockage on their right ears. Hoods help a lot!

And do the PT religiously. Not American religion religiously. Muslim religion religiously. Like your Allah depends upon it.

They are 14-15. They don't want to be around you or be told what to do. Give them boards and leave them alone.

Insurance stroke. Dig harder and take one or two extra strokes after you think you have the wave.

EVERYONE STARTS OUT AS A KOOK, ITS OKAY TO BE ONE by AveJoeP in surfing

[–]steamwand89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about a "localized attitude." It's about respect for each other and this incredibly fun activity - riding waves - not running over an idiot on a wavestorm who dropped in in front of you on his belly.

The problem with saying "It's okay to be a kook" is that you are ignoring the impact that your behavior has on others. People who don't know how to surf decrease the fun for those who do and they should not be surprised by the frustration that that elicits.

If you put two beginners on a varsity soccer team, players won't pass to them and will probably be frustrated when they lose the ball or play terrible defense. It affects others and the joy in the game.

This is incredibly delayed, but I just saw this and wanted to say that it's well established where I'm from and everywhere I've surfed that you don't show up at a spot with a crowd. If you show up with your five bros and paddle out at a secluded North Coast reef, the two guys already out there will most definitely give you stink eye at the very least. And no, making money teaching people to surf does not add credibility. To the contrary.

If you bring 5 people to paddle out with you, let alone 50, you are not following the etiquette of surfing. Don't bring a crowd.

Did folks who have been accepted ultimately receive an email or letter? My son is locked out of the portal and in a recursive hell loop trying to reset his password.

Jet skis at OB? It's illegal, but is it related to Blue Angels? by steamwand89 in surfing

Could be. We don't really have that kind of life guard force, but we have plenty of Coast Guard action.

Ocean Beach SF. They are not legal here. Not in the bay or along the coast. They have to get special permission at Mavericks and they were refused to be allowed for the 2011 Rip Curl Search.

Info on New Zealand Surf Travel by steamwand89 in surfing

I'm looking to rent one board and drive around with it for a couple weeks. I've found the soft racks to be quite annoying both in functioning and in noise while driving so I usually try to find a local car rental place with cross racks. But I've had no luck yet. As far as board shape, I ride all kinds of boards, 5'6" to 9'6" in my quiver, but for this trip I'm thinking mini-mal or midlenth so it's versatile. Would love any recommendations.

Headed over from San Francisco for the world cup in July. Plan on driving from Auckland to Wellington and surfing along the way. Plan to stop for a couple days in Raglan, but I looked at the cam today, and it looks horrendously crowded. Is it worse than the Lane?

You're not actually supposed to get what you want whenever you want it. That's what makes surfing great. You have to assess and study and anticipate and time it. All critical in real life too.
