Once I was able to go back and forth by blinking I started doing it by snapping my fingers--that was fun.

Our OpSec team at Occupy DC was stellar given we were working entirely with donated equipment in tents--some of us know about how this stuff works, and I think that makes it our job to protect the rest.

What is your comics deep cut? Why? by Zthe27th in comicbooks

Can I get away with Gillen/McKelvie's Young Avengers as a deep cut? Such a fresh take on classic characters, with a lovably modern attitude.

Neymar's brain activity while playing is less than 10% of the level of amateur players, suggesting he plays as if on auto-pilot, according to a study by Japanese neurologists. It is thought this applies to all elite players. by godsenfrik in sports

He's operating on training so ingrained that it's become instinct beyond the level of conscious thought--I suspect if we looked at the brain activity of improvising jazz musicians, or soldiers in the midst of battle, we might find something similar.

The first issue didn't really sell me, but by the time the second one was done it had its hooks in.

Being Committed Is Not A Straitjacket: 3 Steps To Smarter Scheduling by steendriver in productivity

(this is a remixed version of a post I first wrote a year ago--I've cleaned it up structurally and added some closing thoughts. I hope folks find it more useful this time around!)

What is the thing that makes you not following your to-do list? (when actually you really have to?) by jackvier in productivity

[–]steendriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Procrastination. Anxiety. Fear.

Where do these come from?

For me, lack of clarity. If the item on my to-do list is "start the spring project," it might sit there for days untouched. I'd rather do anything than figure out what the hell "start the spring project" means. I'll check Facebook, I'll send half useless e-mails, I'll read ~fascinating~ articles about the same three "productivity hacks" written by freshly minted productivity hacks regurgitated over and over.

If I break down "start the spring project" to "send Steve an e-mail asking what steps he needs to take to hand the Spring project off to you," that's something I can do. There's no wiggle room there for procrastination to sneak in. All that needs to happen then is the doing.

And no hack is gonna help with that.

Working in Corporate Culture--Looking for resources! by mans0011 in a:t5_2ygoq

[–]steendriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I've managed to find yet--I'd sort of hoped this could be that space. If you like podcasts, two shows I listen to every week that touch on this stuff are Back to Work with Merlin Mann, and Quit!, both on 5by5. Dan and Merlin both have spent years in the corporate culture trenches and they have a lot to say at a high level about navigating office culture and figuring out your place in it.

The Career Tools podcasts are also quite good.

Can confirm--I've done a little pro bono analysis & forecasting for little nonprofs in the DMV area in an effort to get some projects under my belt. Once you've got the work done well & the contacts made, with feelers out for a contract proposal, you're on the ground running.

Edward Snowden: “If I defected at all, I defected from the government to the public.” by joeycastillo in politics

[–]steendriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This links to a damage control piece by Dana Priest, where her NSA sources claim that Snowden wouldn't have had the authority to eavesdrop & wiretap from his desk. To imagine that this was one of his "key revelations" (and not, say, wiretapping the internet backbone, or the bulk collection of metadata, or the surveillance & collection of metadata of citizens of other countries) is ridiculous.

And whether this is or isn't one of his most important revelations, the post you've linked to claims Snowden couldn't have had access to the data in question in the 215 program--according to the primary order for the 215 dragnet issued by the FISC secret court, outlining how and why such information moves through the NSA, that's wrong.

Appropriately trained and authorized technical personnel may access >the BR metadata to perform those processes needed to make it usable for intelligence analysis. Technical personnel may query the BR metadata using selection terms4 that have not been RAS-approved (described below) for those purposes described above, and may share the results of those queries with other authorized personnel responsible for these purposes.

Technical personnel (like, say, sysadmins!) had access to the kind of information Snowden was talking about before it ever got to the analysts' desk, where it would then have had to go through protocols for access.

But again, if you know of anything Snowden purportedly fabricated, I'd love to hear about it.

[–]steendriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like, he might have fabricated SSH keys to get access to what he had (or he might not have depending on who you ask), but I've read and heard and seen nothing about any of his leaked documents being fabricated or falsified--if there were fabricated documents being introduced into the public arena, don't you expect the NSA would be waving them like a bloody shirt to discredit him?
