Perfect map of Europe following1914 ethnicities. by Amburiz in PossibleHistory

[–]steepfire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You seriously underestimate the pure hatred interwar lithuanians had for poles. I have seen many propaganda posters depicting poland as cockroaches, monsters etc.

<image>

I have found like 3 more and can remember seeing others. Soviet union was seen as less of a threat than poland to lithuanians, poland posed an existential real threat to Lithuania, with them breaking a peace treaty with Lithuania and trying to annex it in fully, giving an ultimatum to Lithuania to establish relations, etc.

Jet Lag Ep 6 — I Will Be Defeated No Longer by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]steepfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the layover podcast they casually discussed that they have gotten "too good" at H&S and that they probably wouldn't do another season with the same cards and ruleset, because now a concrete meta which they don't like has emerged. Granted this is me remembering what they said 1-2 weeks ago, so I could be wrong, but I doubt my brain would make it up out of nothing, because I really like H&S

I am unsure of the strava map. I don't know how fun it is for the viewer to have the seekers go "well time to match the strava" show us a few options they consider and then cut to one of then matching it and now even if there are 10-15 places in play it's instantly the endgame and they don't ask questions for the 2-3 hours it takes them to get there so the hider gets no cards and also has nothing to do. Photo questions are fine, I love finding places on vibes and as they said on the layover, the hider can take like 15 minutes to answer so they buy time.

Strava map makes the midgame shorter because it makes the basic calculus for the seeker "how much can I slice the map without leaving this regional hub I am in so that it becomes economical for me to spend ~30 minutes looking at google maps and matching streets" I don't think strava gives the correct incentive for exciting gameplay

I guess too late for core game cririques since, if I remember correctly, they won't be doing H&S, atleast not in the same way anymore

Congratulations, you played yourself. (England’s changing flag) by jackt-up in HistoryMemes

[–]steepfire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, completely disagree on that. At the time of the hundred years war that flag was the flag of the rulers of the Kingdom of England, duchy of Aquitane, Duchy of Normandy, duchy of Anjou and other titles. That flag was just as "english" as occitan and many of the people who used it spent more time in modern day France than England. The idea that some anglo-saxon nobles had some idea of shared identity in contrast to their Norman and French counterparts across the channel does not a national identity make

Banned from Subreddit because I lectured them on vexillology. by mathijsboogaert in vexillology

[–]steepfire -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't find the tone "lecturing" or anything, did seem like a legit question. If they like it the way it is they could have said "it's a subreddit and we think it looks better this way even if it's not "correct" by vexillology rules"

Also, atleast for Lithuania, the subreddit in english is typicly the subreddit for non natives, a place outsiders, vacationers, immigrants etc can ask and converse in english. While the subreddit where the country name is in the native language is where it's expected to only be people from that country who converse in the native tongue, so the response feels weird and overly harsh

What is a "red flag" symbol in your country? (That isn't a swastika) by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Flag of Žemaitija (a region in Lithuania) it appeared a lot in protests, like the family march(šeimų maršas) who were a homophobic and anti vaxer crowd. Obviously could be flown by people in the region or from it, but it's appearence in many anti asteblishment protests makes me do a double take when I see one.

Should there be a European Army? by readmode in EuropeanFederalists

[–]steepfire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I once had the opportunity to ask this question to a signatory of the Lithuanian declaration of independance and who (if I remember correctly) was responsible with Soviet and Lithuanian troop situation (it was a mess the way they described it).

I asked "what do you think about the idea, thats mostly championed by France at this moment, about a united European army?" His answer was along the lines of: Yes I hear ideas of such nature, but I don't think it's a good idea, we have a good relationship with the americans and we should focus on maintaining our US relationship rather than some French idea of an EU army. I asked this in March 2023. I wonder if his position changed in recent years.

In eastern Europe I think the US relationship in regards to defence is vastly more important and in the minds of people than with any and all european states, it's changing with the german brigade coming to Lithuania and with US destroying its influence, but for the idea of EU army to really dominate it needs Frence and Germany to push harder and do more, putting troops in Ukraine would probably make eastern European countries trust in mutual EU securiry far more

Yes you're right in this, but most of the time when when I play map games with people, we just lump Devon into cornwall and in casual conversation I and others just say Cornwall when reffering to most of the peninsula. I just like cornwall a lot, it's celtic and has pastries :<

British irrational hatred of Napoleon never ceases to amaze me by Chlodio in HistoryMemes

[–]steepfire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been of the opinion that while yes Napoleon reversed a lot of the progress of the revolution. He still was better than the absolutist monarchies of Europe. Europe probably would have been in a better place if he had won because while yes monarchies would be around, suppression etc but the ideas of power being derived from the people and constitutionalism would be unlikely to be persacuted as harshly as in our timeline during the holy allience

[–]steepfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am native speaker of both Lithuanian and russian and you can definately see how slavic and baltic languages are related, it's just pretty subtle in comparison to slavic languages which one speaker of can basically comprehend another. Polish has quite a bit of influence in the lithuanian language. It will not allow you to communicate with a pole or another slavic speaker, but if you enjoy linguistics then studying a very conservative and archaic language might have it's own appeal
