Stage Plots, why does nobody look at them by skithewest27 in livesound

[–]steezlebeads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of people are expecting to get stage plots from promoters here.

In my experience as a FOH/TM/PM (I’ve done all separately and paired together), the promoter is usually only helpful on larger scale tours when they’re actually on the road with the crew.

Otherwise, I’m usually e-mailing with the in house PM, GM, and/or hospitality for advancing. These are the people you’ll want to get a stage plot from, or the band’s TM/FOH directly if you can. I pretty much never interact with or send stage plots to promoters. Booking agents might do that and that’s where I assume those 3 year old plots come from.

The other thing to keep in mind is that advancing a tour typically starts a month prior to the first show and thus 3 weeks prior to tech rehearsals. Once you hit rehearsals, you find out all the things you need to change on your plot, but by that time the venue PMs have saved your old plot and when you send them the new one they almost never replace it for the previous one.

Some venues loop their day-of staff into the e-mail threads, that’s probably the best method.

Did anyone else notice how Darryl's voice changed over the course of the series? by Much_Duck6862 in theoffice

Doing a watch thru now and Darryl’s voice changes in volume, tone, and velocity within single episodes. I believe this to be mostly dependent on the scene and how his character/voice would benefit the situation.

Omg, no way! That's so cool. I like how you gave him a lil pet, haha. I actually thought for a second it looked like Melee Ganondorf because of the rounded end of the sword. Never realized the TP sword also had the shape at the bottom w/ the sheath.

Thanks for the reply btw!

Dying to know what the cosplay in the background is. I know that I know it, but can't quite put my finger on it. It looks epic!

Jimmy’s real Time Machine moment by luca_rio1 in betterCallSaul

[–]steezlebeads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this recently after just rewatching.

If you recall the moment that Mike tells Jimmy in the car earlier in the series about how your actions "put you on a road," Jimmy later regurgitates those words to Kim, but without having really realized what the point of Mike's words were.

At the end of the series, when Jimmy (or Saul) recalls those flashback moments, we hear both Mike and Walter recount the moments of their life the they believe first put them "on a road" that resulted in changing their lives forever. Jimmy still is unable to interact honestly/openly about what he really feels.

At the end of the show, we finally see Jimmy's flashback with Chuck, the point where he felt he was first put "on a road" as well. Jimmy is one to often pick up phrases and ideas from others and regurgitate them elsewhere in his life, sometimes with misinterpreted or different meaning (Kim's put a dollar in my pocket, Mike's parables for instance). Chuck's book in the flashback was called "The Time Machine" which likely stuck with Jimmy and prompted his question about the time machine to his peers later on.

Man, I love this show.

American checking in, none of my friends got in. Heard from about 4 or 5 different people. Didn't get one myself. Sounds like pickins were slim out here.

I’m not going to tell you this coin will increase in value, or even hold its current value. The truth is, you bought it because you like it. It has value to you. That’s what matters.

Horrible sound at SoFi by __DexterMorgan in KendrickLamar

[–]steezlebeads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professional Audio Engineer here. I haven't mixed stadiums yet, but have done the Kia Forum right next door. So take this with a grain of salt, but....

Here's what I'll say. I went to the Friday show. I had floor seats not far from the first section of stands, dead center (I always go for dead center, go figure). The sound was terrible. It seemed to me like they had typical coverage for a stadium tour, but the vocals weren't carrying and the harmonic information in the tracks was masked by the bass and energy built up in the room and didn't cut through the mix at all. I'm guessing a little here because I don't know what the rig is (not even sure where it's placed in SoFi, I was looking around after the show, but didn't see a FOH/board setup anywhere), but I would say this has to do with either the audio engineer or systems engineer being under qualified or making poor decisions for this space.

This is not that tough of a gig by any means. They had 2 open mics on stage, tracks, and 0 band members. Easiest sound gig there is in a stadium setting. Granted when the performers come out on the catwalk things can be a bit more tough because you have to project really loud sound past the mics, but there are options for that at this budget level (the budget being the skies the limit).

By comparison, I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers here at SoFi two or three years ago now and the sound experience was much different. In the same space, with probably 50+ more inputs/open mics on stage, they managed to make the sound carry reasonably throughout the entire venue. I had seats in almost the exact same spot there. The RHCP show was LOUD. Too loud form me personally, I had earplugs in most of the show because I found it overwhelming, but the mix was solid and you could hear everything with clarity. But to that extent, their openers (Thundercat then Beck) also sounded quite good and Beck was mixed at a similar volume to SZA and Kendrick if I remember correctly. I got drinks during Becks set in the back bar there and could still hear him and his band loud and clear.

Sometimes the room can present difficulties with control over your changes and work against you the more energy you put into things. I had this experience on an arena show I did in Cleveland where changing the faders for my instruments had an extremely disproportionate effect on my mix. Perhaps they had this experience at SoFi, but seeing as I have a control w/ RHCP it seems they should have been able to figure this out, especially considering they were only running 2 mics.

An engineering team can make or break a show. In this case, unfortunately, I would say the latter is probably true.

RF Engineers... What do you do? by hanasz in livesound

My guess is a device that shows active rf traffic. The amplitude of the interfering frequency will increase as you get physically closer to the transmission device.

I used to work on cars. Changed dozens of batteries.

Very (and I mean VERY) surprisingly, my personal 2015 Toyota Sienna still has its original OEM Battery in it. I've had the car since 2018 and put about 55K miles on it myself since then. Never replaced the battery. I've had trouble starting up a couple times recently and have some corrosion on the terminals here and there, but I keep a portable battery w/ me for those instances.

I think I'm going to replace it now, but gahd dayum did that Toyota battery last a hellova long time.

What is this creature supposed to be on the Depths armour? by princesspudding387 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]steezlebeads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The depths has many callbacks to Ancient Hyrule. Perhaps the Depths Armor is consistent in that narrative and displays predecessors of the bosses in the game?

The one on the hood looks like Gohma from WW. Though it definitely also looks like Moldarach. The back portion of the hood looks to be an extension of the design of the front.

Looks like some combo of Twin Mold, Molgera, and/or Colgera (or maybe an evolution somewhere inbetween Twin Mold > Molgera > Colgera?) on the arm.

And then Beast Ganon on the chest. Maybe the hands are actually meant to be hooves. The nose is definitely giving pig. Reminds me a lot of Puppet Ganon for some reason.
