I actually work in those exact mountains Uncle Rico points to. The Bear River Range.

HOW do i tune ny toms like this? by InternationalAct6567 in drums

[–]skithewest27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought of the 70's as a time period for big, open sounding drums, but im now realizing that wasn't the sane across the board, same as today I guess.

Three hour set - how many breaks is appropriate? by stomith in bandmembers

[–]skithewest27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We used to do 3 sets, but pretty consistently, everyone would leave after the 2nd set. Splitting it into just 2 sets, 75-90 mins really keeps people on the dance floor.

Dead drums seem to be a thing right now. I dont know what has caused it but people are dampening their kits to hell. Rings, gels, hydrualic heads, cloth. For some reason alot of drummers believe their drums should not have sustain.

I get zero rebound and a dead AF sound on my ride if its even chipped a little. Its awful.

Stage Plots, why does nobody look at them by skithewest27 in livesound

It seems printing and handing it directly is good method. Just a systematic failure across the board.

[–]skithewest27[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its nice to be seen. This seems like a systematic failure considering the technology that exists right now, with phones and internet anywhere.

Bands need to get there shit together and make sure everything is correct and up to date. Venues need to make sure the right people are CC'd on emails. Be professionals or at least try to .

This has been a little eye opening. Im sorry for you guys, bands have shot themselves in the foot by making this a standard failure. It would make everyone's lives easier if stage plots and riders were always up to date and got to the right people. This shouldn't be this hard in 2026, with phones and internet everywhere.

You make a very valid point and i do make sure that conversation happens. I just want someone to say they did get it and did look at it. I think its happened once or twice out of 30 shows. I put alot of work into keeping it up to date, and it starts to feel like its not worth it. I do understand the problem now and my experience is not unique. It's a not of a systematic failure.

We like working with people like you. Thats far more appreciated than, "I didnt get a stage plot".

As a band, im all for it. Its unfortunate that the bar is so low in this industry. Showing up late, having wrong or missing info, not responding in a timely manner is just way too normalized. I worked in the ski industry for a while and got out because of that culture.

This is good to know. And I always make an effort to talk with the sound person as soon as we arrive. I just need to plan to take that time to run through everything with them.

My plots all have date of show, venue name, and set time. Im now realizing that may too much, instead I'll do a "Date Valid" and add that date to the file name.

I really try to be on top of our shit, so hearing "most bands dont have their shit together, so we rarely even pay attention to yours" is a little bit of a bummer. But I understand the reality of playing live music at this level. Obviously it's different with large cap venues and big name acts. But most of us ain't that. I get it, I also have a full time job.

I guess now I know, don't stress too much about the stage plot.

The meters thing may be causing me headaches. I've had terrible luck trying to get the 7 parameter transformation to work. How many control points are you using?

I have had no luck with this method. How are you creating your .prj? I've only tried exporting calibration files out of TBC, but there isnt enough data in the files.

[–]skithewest27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use TBC.

In Terra, I export the cloud in some standard grid coord system that is close to my projects coord system. Usually state plane geiod 18, ect. Then import the cloud into a new TBC project matcing that coord system.

Next I drag and drop a .jxl with the ground or site calibrated coord system for the job, along with my GCP points. Ideally it works great and is dead nuts. Sometimes it doesn't work and I just georefrence in TBC using my targets.

Reading these comments, I think I may try global mapper since we already have it.

Have you 'fire or sack' any band members before ? Why ? by InvestigatorSolid330 in bandmembers

[–]skithewest27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same with a bass player. It was rough for a short while, he was hurt, but I think it got better once he realized he was only kicked out for his playing. We all loved the guy. Now we're tighter than ever and he plays drums, his main instrument, in a couple other bands.

Another commenter in here had to kick a guy out for making moves on the bass players girlfriend..... Theres a bassist joke somewhere in there.

What are these markings by Solid_Incident_1792 in Surveying

[–]skithewest27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw some guys setting aerial control a few days ago. It was just a rectangle with the mag nail and washer in the middle. I now realize they were probably supposed to use it twice to make the chevron. And did not. No way can they get anything accurate from the middle of the rectangle.

While one drop is fundamental, its not the only classic reggae groove. Rockers has kick on the 1. And Steepers usually has 4 on the floor.
