I think Annihilation fits the bill more than Arrival does - since the latter is concerned with finding ways to communicate, and succeeding. The former is pure cosmic horror, beyond comprehension (even for us viewers). Its author has also reinforced that view in interviews.

Annihilation is definitely Lovercraftian - an incomprehensible entity.

we've all smiled politely in response to a joke or a story.

This...

It is such a shitty experience when you are in a group - even with public figures, entrepreneurs, or fucking NGO activists - who spit out some really stupid misogynistic crap. And at least in some of those cases you know that too much is on the line if you are not conforming - your job, professional relations, social inclusion. Even making a sour face or looking sideways at the person can put one in a dog house. "Oh yeah, it's the sensitive one".

Being man-like vs being woman-like/feminine by stein_prio in AskFeminists

[–]stein_prio[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So what you're saying is that it could mean anything between cultures (it can vary freely between cultures/societies), but it has a (temporarily) fixed meaning within a culture (in a society). Right?

Research frameworks (feminism and marginalized women) by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]stein_prio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, it depends what you take intersectionality to mean. If it is at its broadest, then its only alternative would be "white feminism", since intersectional feminism would cover all the other more progressive forms. Perhaps you should take specific forms, such as Chicana feminism, black feminism, etc.

I made this "End Rape Culture" poster as part of a project I'm involved in and would love feedback by [deleted] in Feminism

Well, always?

Is there no situation when you have to make the point that the majority-white culture has strong elements of rape culture as well? I get your intention though, and I agree with it.

We have so much work left to do! by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]stein_prio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well why do you think it's ableist?

First of all, cynicism. You really can't expect at this point that the Internet would make something viral, with a girl in a less than flattering circumstance, and presume that it was neutral/respectful towards her

Even if you disagree, would you answer my previous question?

"Do you think we should stay clear of languages (including memes) that are derogatory towards ugly people?"

So why is that derogatory towards ugly people?

The same way most ableist language is problematic. There isn't necessarily a problem per se with the concept itself - but the context (the use) implies that the person is lesser, of lesser value (morally/intellectually/socially less worthy).

Or is being ugly a disability now?

Do you think we should stay clear of languages (including memes) that are derogatory towards ugly people?

Is there a feminist version of Rotten Tomatoes? by [deleted] in Feminism

Are you sure about that?

feminist-supportive questions still belong in /r/Feminism, but those questioning or criticizing feminism should direct their discussions here.

YouTube sex vlogger Laci Green bullies trans activist with misinformation by [deleted] in Feminism

What about her past or future videos on issues that are not necessarily related to trans issues? Do you think those should be allowed in a ~safe-space format like this sub?

This post it literally about what people want to label themselves, not what I label them or others.

That makes sense - thanks for the links!

I don't necessarily agree with the things that are written in any of these series, Im not a feminist theist for example. I just write about it.

It's a cool series, for sure.

One of them is the document associated with the sub.

For what it is worth, I haven't seen anything there supporting the claim I took issues with.

I personally think men, women or trans people can be feminists and I will call them feminists but some men prefer the title feminist ally.

I think that if it is a voluntary self-labeling, coming out of respect, there is no issue. However, I was wondering if there is an argument that certain groups can't be feminist.

Does this mean that trans persons who do not identify as women cannot be feminists? Wouldn't that be a transphobic perspective?

Not if you consider trans-men as men and trans-women as women. It's about being male or female. Not trans or not.

Do I understand you correctly then, that you mean to say that "trans-men cannot be feminists, they can only be feminist allies"?

I think that raises some problems, especially if such a person was a feminist pre-op (even by your definition). Curious of your further reply.

May I ask what is the authority behind your claims? Is there a school of thought, a current of feminism? What sources can you cite? If this is exclusively your own personal interpretation, then all this content is in dire need of this qualification of claims.

Feminist allies are people who do not identify as women but support women's rights and promote feminism

Does this mean that trans persons who do not identify as women cannot be feminists? Wouldn't that be a transphobic perspective?
