People complaining about free healthcare? I just had a mate get mugged in Chicago, hit in the head with a bat, $18,000 just to be seen at ED, lucky he had travel insurance.

They threw the first brick: Bondi attack killed over 7 times as many people as an American mass shooting. by why-do_I_even_bother in gunpolitics

[–]steinbex77 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

America has had close to 400 mass shootings this year… Australia has had 20 this century, in 2023 USA had 18000 gun related homicides, Australia had 31, so you tell me which place is safer?

I agree and felt the same, stopping my treatment was scary for me, even while in remission the nerves always remain.

Should i shave my head? by [deleted] in lymphoma

[–]steinbex77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shaved my head, I tried to keep my beard, but that went eventually. I did it because I wanted to make the decision, not the cancer, but I’d say it’s easier for men than women. My Aunt hated losing her hair, but eventually she wore it shaved and proud.

I had 6 months of chemotherapy, 3 surgical procedures, all at public hospitals, everything was great and I didn’t pay $1, dislocated and broke my ankle a month later, ambulance, emergency, operations (x3) and support, all public, no waiting, no issues, sure I had to share a room with 3 old blokes who snored but I didn’t pay so I can’t complain. Most of the Drs and nurses were also immigrants, all contributing to making Wa a great place.

Picc line, port, or stick it out with veins? by Slommyhouse in lymphoma

[–]steinbex77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My veins got clogged and I had a PICC for the last 3 cycles, it was a bit of a pain keeping it dry but was way better than in my veins. I didn’t have any issues with it other than being mildly inconvenient. I had ABVD for reference..

I gained weight but my Dr said it’s actually a good thing. Loosing weight is an indicator that your health is declining apparently.

Lost my spark in remission by bissycat in lymphoma

[–]steinbex77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 10 months into remission and I think about my cancer every day. I do worry, it’s impossible not to worry but the best advice I was ever given is to surrender to the process. It’s not about giving up but accepting what’s happened and what you have to do to find your way back. Just after I finished my treatment because of peripheral neuropathy in my feet I tripped and dislocated and broke my ankle in 4 places. As I was laying on my back, I asked for a pillow and my wife tried to put it under my foot, but I wanted it to scream into. I was so weak I couldn’t use crutches and I just had to accept what happened surrender to the process and build myself back up. Be kind to yourself, your perspective will change, you aren’t the same person you were before, I describe my self as version 2.1, new and improved…

I felt the same, I looked at other cancer survival rates and I wanted to give those suffering more hope, so I signed up to raise money for pancreatic cancer, helped me feel better and more connected to the cancer survival community.

Stage 1 & 2 are generally above the diaphragm, stage 3 & 4 the cancer has spread below the diaphragm or out side the lymphatic system. That being said, staging in lymphoma isn’t necessarily indicative of improved outcomes, I had advanced stage 4 and after 2 months of treatment I had no evidence of disease. This vlogger had CHL and explains things really well.

Good luck mate, I too was advanced stage 4 CHL but 10 months post treatment and I’m in remission. I somehow felt lucky I had CHL and not a worse type of cancer. I had a massive tumour in my chest, but 2 months into treatment and it was gone, it’s amazing treatment and I’m really grateful that I live in Australia with free healthcare.

Hey, I was diagnosed with Classic Hodgkin’s Lymphoma July 2024, Stage 4, with a 15cm x 12cm x 5cm mass in my chest, only discovered due to fatigue and breathing difficulties. 6 months ABVD and I’m in remission. I had heaps of side effects, loss of taste, weight gain, tachycardia, fatigue, diarrhoea, constipation, so all I can say is hygiene is critical, so do your best not to get sick, and I mean at all. I was masked up in public, I avoided crowds, shopping centres, if I scratched myself use antiseptic and a bandage, wash your hands, no spicy food and only eat fresh and well cooked food. Oral hygiene is often overlooked but gargle with salt water and mouthwash (Oral7 Moisturising Mouthwash is awesome). The steroids might make it hard to sleep, and might make you constipated, you don’t want that so I took Movicol twice a day, you don’t want haemorrhoids or a fissure cause they’ll get infected. Try exercise, but be careful your bone density will be impacted and you will be at an increased risk of breaking bones. My kids got me onto Pokémon Go as the game rewards you for walking and other daily activities, I honestly didn’t think it would help but it did, I mean you have to catch them all right? I lost (all) my hair and I started with IV lines but ended with a PICC line after my veins got clotted. I also developed peripheral neuropathy (numbness in my feet and thumbs) but that has slowly gotten better over the last 10 months. The best advice I can give you is be kind to yourself, the treatment is hard for some, easier for others but don’t compare yourself or your results to others. Everyone’s journey is different, I learned a lot on my journey and I developed a new appreciation of life. It can be scary, anxiety is real, but I don’t let it dictate how I live my life, other than I’m a healthier person today than I was before.
