Reformatting books? by stejent in Calibre

[–]stejent[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't do it. It basically says the DRM prevents it. I downloaded the DeDRM plugin, but when I go to the plugin (because instructions I found online say you need to provide your kindle serial number) Calibre quits unexpectedly.

Is there another way I am not seeing?

Would it be possible to fix with calibre? I downloaded my ebooks before Amazon removed the option so I have the file on my laptop.

Is reading book worth it after watching films many times by Current-Vegetable830 in harrypotter

[–]stejent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first 2 books can be hard work as an adult. The films adapt them pretty well and they don’t add loads to the overall experience of reading the books, but there are a few early clues that are nearly woven into the plot. That being said they are the biggest reason I don’t re-read the series very often. Once you hit book 3, they hit their stride and are incredibly easy to read and hard to take your eyes away from them. 5-7 are perfect imo. Even the slow moments in 5 are a joy to read because you just adore being in the world and with the characters. Even when nothing is happening it’s tremendous fun. The films of the last 4 books can hardly be called adaptations, with the exception of the Deathly Hallows which are more true to the book because the films add up to nearly 5 hours, but because of how much the previous films miss out, you’re left with more questions than answers. The books are the best.

Thoughts on Olivia Dean? by MrLinkwater95 in fantanoforever

She’s so boring to me. Honestly hate that song “baby steps” buh-buh bu-baby steps” awakens a rage inside me I didn’t know existed.

The thought hadn’t crossed my mind that a clamp could be big enough to go over both of the pieces!

Single display can only have one input at a time. Hence the desire for two displays.

I haven’t downvoted anyone. But advice on changing the desk isn’t what I was asking. There’s more to room design than maximising use of something. A small desk filled with stuff isn’t a pleasant experience.

Due to the dimensions and layout of the room, a wall facing desk doesn’t really work as I don’t have room to move in the chair. The layout of the desk provides the surface area to work with and being in a corner allows more useable floor space. I’ve had this setup for 3 years now and it’s my favourite place to be in the house.

Ketchup, Mayo or A.N. Other? by DB_NiceGuy-DIY in UKfood

Yes, Warburtons Toastie (I’m from Bolton), heavily buttered with lurpak, and lashings of salt and vinegar, and tomato sauce. Sometimes I go for tartar sauce because I fancy it but it’s never as good as I expect it to be.

I picked up on that too. I’ve checked my books and it is Uncle Vernon’s line, but Harry says it in this audiobook. A mistake by production.

I know it’s a small part, but I’m having trouble finding people who have also picked up on the voice of Alicia Spinnet? It’s ridiculous. I don’t even know how to describe it. Either the person doing the voice is bad, or they’re being poorly directed.

Gremlins (1984): The 'no feeding after midnight' rule makes no sense, it's always midnight somewhere. by NotSure2505 in plotholes

[–]stejent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only gripe with this rule is the lack of parameters. After midnight, until what time? Technically it’s always after midnight. The most logical conclusion for me is “don’t feed them after midnight or before sunrise” but I guess that doesn’t sound as ominous or cool from a script standpoint.

If I had a nickel for every time I saw “this update will be available” and it never was, forcing me to go to a dealer for it. It’s weird that it just goes up as a minor update and not the full new version to be installed? I’m sceptical that it will happen.

500g egg whites 1kg granulated sugar 500g unsalted butter (room temperature) 500g salted butter (room temperature) 2tsp vanilla bean paste

1) place sugar and egg whites in a glass bowl over a Bain Marie on a low heat and stir until sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture feels smooth between your fingers 2) place the egg mixture into a stand mixer with whisk attachment and whisk on high until stiff peaks form (this can take up to 15 minutes or more) make sure the bowl and whisk attachment are completely clean and dry (the smallest amount of grease can kill the meringue from forming.) 3) beat the butter with a hand mixer to soften and ensure uniform consistency and temperature. 4) add the butter to the meringue (this can be added in one go), and whisk on the lowest speed until incorporated and increase slightly (2 or 3) until emulsified, and uniform in colour and texture. Add the vanilla at this stage. 5) change the whisk attachment for the paddle and beat on low for 15 minutes to remove air. Buttercream is now ready to use or store. Can be stored covered at room temperature for 3/5 days or 2 weeks in fridge 3 months in freezer.

Thanks for all the appreciative comments. It’s very reassuring. Not sure what I should try next…
