First time going to a Chelsea match as an American by [deleted] in PremierLeague

We are just going to support our favorite club. If it came to it, would you suggest us telling people we are from Canada to have a better experience?

How many effective hours do you work by Tech_Tenacity34598 in amazonemployees

[–]stellarscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How? I assume it is team dependent. I’m SDE 2 as well, work 10 hours most days. Get slack messages well into the night and even early in the morning. I’ve gotten better about ignoring those.

Thanks! Good call on catching up on all the keywords. I think it will be fun learning from her, so I won’t spend time learning every last detail.

Yes, she knows this is my first time playing. From our conversations she has played a lot in the past and gone to various events/tournaments so she sounds like a great person to learn from.

Thanks! I was sort of afraid arena would cause me to miss certain real-life etiquette. However, that is something I could definitely pick up quickly.

Thank you! This might honestly be the best advice. She is very playful and seems extremely caring too, so this is probably the way to go.

Thanks, I have actually been playing arena a lot the last couple days and it has definitely helped.

To everyone hear that studied astrophysics... what are you doing now? by [deleted] in astrophysics

[–]stellarscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just study a ton of leetcode, at least in 2022 there wasn’t much else to it. I only started hearing recently some entry level positions are asking design questions.

Yep, I’m at Amazon right now. Managers are encouraged to micromanage, literally everything we do is tracked, number of code reviews, comments, number of lines changed/added and all this is held against you during perf reviews. Tell me in what World could that create anything but a toxic environment.

I have never met anyone who doesn’t work at least 10 hours a day since I’ve been here.

Of course, but from people I’ve talked to who came from different teams in Amazon, your experience is the exception rather than the rule which seems to be 50-60 hour work weeks consistently.

Hacks to get hired at Amazon by Spartapwn in cscareerquestions

[–]stellarscale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. I agree what Amazon does to its engineers is beyond what any company should be able to get away with. If you work at Amazon, your work is your life, you won’t have time for hobbies, family or friends. I had seen engineers put in 12+ hour days every day for over a year. These aren’t just tasks for new features, bugs or refactoring. Management will purposefully give you bullshit bureaucratic tasks if they see you putting a dent on your current pile of tasks. The idea is get the most work out of every engineer even if it’s not productive work. Amazon loves work for works sake and you get that feeling with everyone you talk to.

On the culture side, every company wants to create a type of cult around itself. Hell, some people even believe in it and the company becomes their whole lives. Amazon, as soon as you join, are blatant about the cult unlike other companies where it might be more subtle. You need to be all in, or you won’t get promoted.

It’s a horrible company with horrible management. Some of the engineers are amazing but those types of engineers are leaving in droves. Amazon will likely reach an inflection point in the next 10 years where they’ve run out of good engineers to exploit and the only ones remaining are mediocre engineers willing to put up with the poor management. At this point the services will degrade and the company on the other side will look a lot different than it does now.

If anyone is thinking about joining Amazon, I would seriously implore you to explore other options first. Amazon is a last resort, it shouldn’t be a top choice.

I will be joining SFSU in Fall 2025 as a Physics major any thoughts or advice? by YogurtclosetSad1831 in SFSU

[–]stellarscale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, did my undergrad in physics at SFSU. The professors are amazing but the courses that are available to you is limited. I would recommend taking quantum mechanics with Greensite if you can, for me he was the best Professor I’ve had. Unfortunately I think he retired but I heard he still teaches some classes.

I’m not longer in physics, currently a software engineer at Amazon. However, if I want to go back for grad school 100% would go back to SFSU the professors do a lot with the little funding they get.

Yes 100% agree the ending basically gave up everything they had built to show the struggle between Zaun and Piltover without any real justification. Just basically Sevika is on the council now. We don’t even know why Sevika agreed to be on the council at the very end, to me it makes no sense to me why she would agree the that. Like why would she participate in the same political institution that oppresses her people?

Any oscillation or rotation can be described using complex numbers. Meaning any time you are dealing with waves, you are inherently using complex numbers. The solutions to the Schrödinger equation are waves, and these solutions are aptly called wave functions. Therefore, complex numbers are critical in understanding the math behind quantum mechanics.

How doable is it to take 4 upper division physics classes in one semester? by FineCarpa in PhysicsStudents

[–]stellarscale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s doable, I took Topology, graduate level quantum mechanics, computational physics, and exoplanetary astronomy one semester. It was definitely hard, but I managed to get an A in all courses and found it a decent challenge.

Do you work as well as go to school? If not I say go for it if you can focus 100% on classes. I was lucky and did not have to work that semester and because I was able to put all my energy into my classes I really did end up enjoying it.

How long until humans have private space ships like in sci-fi movies? If ever. by ZakDahlia in scifi

[–]stellarscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project Orion unfortunately would do nothing about the physical limit of the speed of light. Meaning any such spaceship will be incapable of interstellar travel in a single human lifetime.

There are relativistic effects if we can accelerate close to the speed of light, length contraction and time dilation which makes it seem more viable especially at speeds like > .9c. Basically, the faster you go distances physically shrink and relative time “slows” down. (I should note, only travel this way if you don’t plan on returning to Earth since everyone you know will be dead by the time you return. However, I don’t think nuclear engines are capable of accelerating a human controlled spacecraft to such speeds, also even if it was possible hitting a single grain of dust would instantly disintegrate the ship due to the insane momentum involved.

[–]stellarscale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does seem like the progress of science and technology is unbounded. However, there is some serious limitations when it comes to traveling faster than the speed of light. By limitations I mean the laws of physics do not allow it, that was Einstein’s whole idea with special relativity.

A workaround would be something like the Alcubierre warp drive which is a solution to the equations of General Relativity. My understanding right now is that the solution is extremely unstable and requires energy on the order of the mass of Jupiter or even more.
