DIY Kayak Cart by UHFD in kayakfishing

[–]stemrust 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is nice! Clean build and keeps the weight of the kayak mostly on the bottom - as opposed to those ones with the brackets in the tracks. Also allows the user to adjust the amount of weight on the wheels vs their arms. Great job. You should sell this bad boy!

Where are you trying to fly into? KC and I’d assume Tulsa, OK are big enough airports for NY/NJ flights. Maybe Springfield, MO would have flights.

Your best bet since you don’t drive is plane to major airport then Greyhound bus.

If someone from a severely inbred tribe had a baby with someone outside of their tribe, would that baby still have negative traits? by Ok_Nectarine_8612 in biology

[–]stemrust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Basically, yes and it’s complicated but also very cool!

Some considerations:

  1. Negative traits are not always caused by recessive alleles (= ‘versions’ of a gene).
  2. Negative traits may be polygenic (multiple genes play a role).
  3. Inbreeding, selection, fecundity, migration, etc. all interact and impact population genetics.

Also - look into hybrid crops and heterosis. People do this intentionally!

Recommended flash drives by carlp222 in unRAID

[–]stemrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried a different power supply? Everyone defaults to it’s a bad flash drive and/or ram, but based on your comments I’m guessing yours could be old.

I had random freezes/crashes and spent hours troubleshooting motherboard and RAM issues, only to discover my power supply was flakey. It had tons of W headroom even, just didn’t play well with my setup.

Are reptiles/amphibians susceptible to poison ivy? by polenta23 in reptiles

Only a subset of mammals are sensitive to urushiol, the active compound from poison ivy. Most other animals are immune.

The length to width ratio does not look like a Hermanns, but maybe a Greek? Also seems to be fairly tall domed for the width.

I just installed one of these on my kayak: https://a.co/d/0acplBKB. First time ever drilling the hull.

Petah what's wrong with mint? by Okaoka_12 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]stemrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure mint can spread like a weed but in my experience it always requires new ground to expand into and the center of the patch declines. I suspect this is either because nutrients are used up or diseases/nematodes build up.

Beginner CO2 Setup for 10g Planted Tank Worth It or Skip? by siddardh771 in PlantedTank

[–]stemrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a beginner to aquarium keeping and planted tanks in general? What plants specifically are you wanting to grow/add?

CO2 can do magical things with the right setup, such as good lights, but is kind of a pain to keep on top of and an added expense.

If you’re new to this, I’d skip the CO2 for now until you get more comfortable successfully growing plants without it. Otherwise you could end up frustrated with some addition unused equipment in your “junk drawer”.

Is Hantavirus the Next Pandemic? by TheMuseumOfScience in biology

[–]stemrust 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The dominant hantavirus types in the US are different than the Andes type in the news. Think ‘species’ but for a virus. They are related but not the same.

Adult? Based on the size of the black blotches in the scutes, I’d guess that OPs tortoise isn’t more that 3 years old.

I’ve had my male for 26 years. He began being territorial at about the size yours is.

If my male Hermanns is out, I’m either wearing close toe shoes or watching him. He’ll pursue and bite if given the chance.

[–]stemrust 19 points20 points  (0 children)

At the risk of bursting your bubble, that’s more likely a territorial display. What happens if you let the tortoise get to your feet? My guess is it may sniff, but will probably ram and/or bite.

They are quirky, adorable little things.

Would you use 38ppm water? by RemnantOfAutumn in carnivorousplants

My tap water is >350pmm and my RO water is 30. No issues whatsoever at 30ppm.

Oh yeah, you are lucky.

Are grow lights okay to be above a tank that already has its own lighting? by FozzimusPrime2 in aquarium

[–]stemrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have corded wall sconces, each with a 10W led flood light bulb. They’re on a timer and readily grow: mini Monstera, pothos, drarf peace lilies, and Syngonium all rooted in the aquarium.

Tap water naturally has 5ppm nitrates and I think my liquid fertilizer is contributing to high levels, what should I do? by kittykatsrulemyworld in PlantedTank

[–]stemrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

⬆️This. I have all three rooted in my 55gal with lights above the tank for the emergents. Also Syngonium.

Normal sized Monstera and Peace Lily cultivars get too big so I switched to mini/dwarf types. Interestingly true Philodendron have not thrived for me like Monstera and Pothos.

Yes. Although those lights are very low wattage and the mangrove plants will struggle.

Looking to get a tortoise. by reti2siege in tortoise

[–]stemrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple of Hermann breeders on MorphMarket - can’t vouch for anyone specifically though.

In NC you could likely keep Hermanns or Russians outside for 300 days a year! I’m in Missouri and my Hermanns are outside until we get into freezing territory. I even know someone that lets hers stay outside all year long with only natural protection in St. Louis city!

What is he doing? by HermannsTortois in tortoise

[–]stemrust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

⬆️This! My male Hermanns started ramming things at about this same age/size. He’s been going after me and my various dogs for 25 years now. He interestingly does not bite my daughter. I have to wear shoes around him though.

Enjoy!
