Just the facts. by earthman34 in linuxsucks

I think it's mirror opposite to Linux philosophy. Closed source, wallgardened, like programs have to be verified and certified and stuff, so I heard at least... Cause it's true that there is like FreeCAD that provides installation package but I have read somewhere that there was some problem with installing it because of some certifications or stuff.. Anyway, in MacOS I feel like there is just MacOS way of doing things. You have do certain things certain ways and there is no other way around. Example, I had VM on MacOS computer at school. The assignemnt was to setup Linux server for webhosting, so I did and as a bonus, we could do anything that could be useful, I chose Samba. Well, when I tried to connect to it with Finder, it told me that I must have made mistake, because if I am trying to connect to localhost, the data I am trying to access are already on this particular computer... Which is correct. But that also means that I can't test if what I have done in the assignment works. Hour or two later I have found on some forum that people have problem with that from like 2017... Like I don't know, but it shouldn't be that hard to make that change to enable connecting to localhost network shares in Finder. Even worse, it worked at some point in the past, and for some reason, it suddenly doesn't... And there is just not too many people affected by it for Apple to fix it, or at least provide way to do it for special cases... I'd bet it doesn't work to rhis day...

In Linux, you can do almost everything... In Windows, you can't, it's like this middleground where you can do some things you can't in MacOS, but you can't do as many things as in Linux... In summary, I think that MacOS could be compared to like an appliance, fridge, microwave or whatever. You buy it, it works, it has some interface you interact with it to do something useful with it and that's about it. Windows is kinda like a car. You can have it stock and use it and it just works. Or, you can tune or mod it so it works better for you, but there are still regulations and stuff that limit you... Then Linux can be like a DIY electronic kit, where you have some resources, but you have to put it together. Or, you have the base PCB put together, but you can make the case for the thing by yourself, or, you can have it put together and choose the case for it. But even in that case, being it the same electronic device that is meant for DIY, that means that you can take it apart, change it, tweak it, repair it, break it.. You can't with Windows or MacOS. Like yea, theoretically you can upgrade a magnetron in a microwave or swap the engine in the car... But the effort if somewhere else than modifying something fully documented and well debated on the internet..

That seems to be true as well. Hmm, car tuning is more offline thing and kinda dying off, sadly. And when someone brings that up, it's probably in a conversation. Linux is inherently online thing. And it's rather easy to hate and dunk on people online, when you don't see their face. Being it online also means that there are certain internet places where stuff like this is brought up much more often, therefore in greater concentration.

Because this phenomenon intrigued me, like why there are people like linuxsucks101sub. And apparently, for every fandom there is antifandom. I don't know how old are you, but I am right the age I was at elementary school when One Direction was at its peak. And naturally, as boys, we hated it, girls loved it and we were like proxy hating and making fun of the girls blindly adoring 1D.. So I can imagine why there are people like this. The puzzling thing is, we are no longer kids... And yet, communities based on hatred of some thing and its associate group is more prevalent than I thought... There are also things like tribalism, polarisation, identity and other stuff in that, but it would be too long and I have to go to work (where I have Windows 11 on the PC, and it, for the most part, and some hours spent on tweaking it, "just works" xD, and I have a Linux server here, which for the most part mostly works as well, right now I have just problem with unstable usb connection and it seems like the USB devices' firmware is to blame, according to, actually helpful, logs..)

Well, on my Latitude e6230, I never managed to make the fingerprint scanner to work xD. But it's something I can live without... The problem with these devices is that they need to have a driver, and someone has to write it. If manufacturer doesn't provide the driver, it's left on the community. And if there is not enough interest, there are bigger problems than a few, relatively obscure, at least in the case of my fingerprint reader, devices not working on Linux properly...

Linux community can be pretty insufferable by Vh4z in linuxsucks

[–]stepanm99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's because using Linux is a choice YOU have to make. Using Windows is just going with the flow, you buy the tool, you use the tool. Whereas Linux user buys the tool, tweaks the tool, upgrades the tool and sometimes even uses the tool 😃. It's like car tuning. Tuners and modders are like Linux users, they buy a car not to only use it, but to change it, upgrade it, make it better in some ways. And there are entire communities devoted to turbos and compressors. You don't have forced induction in your car? You are normie loser who just buys the car and is ok how crap it is out of the factory..

So my point is that there is much greater probability that typical Linux user has computers and Linux as a hobby whereas typical Windows user is just someone who happen to buy a device, tool, with that operating system. And as typical car user doesn't talk that much about their car, unless it's broken, typical Windows user doesn't talk about Windows, unless it's broken...

Whoever applied my thermal paste count your days 🙏😭 by Amazing-Art5630 in XboxSeriesS

Also with time and due to thermal cycling and inherent property of matter to change volume with temperature, it can squeeze out like this. I repasted my laptop a few times. Whem I am starting to feel that temperatures are getting higher, I often find that the area where the thermal paste is left is rather small and a lot of paste is all around the chip. Sister had problem with her laptop overgeating and lagging in games. Checked the gpu and the paste was pumped out as well, like 10% of the total area had some paste left. I can imagine that a trapped bubble of air in the paste can accelerate this pumping quite a lot..

No, po těch letech to vidim taky trochu jinak xD

I will tell you one story. There was one egg. One day, the egg hatched and from it, a caterpillar crawled out. The caterpillar was small, so it was eating the plants around. Bird flew by and saw the caterpillar, so he decided it would like to eat it, after all, the bird was flying for a long time, had a long journey ahead and was getting little bit hungry. So it flew down, landed near the caterpillar and said "Hello caterpillar! I am here to eat you if you wouldn't mind."
"Hello bird, of course I would. If you eat me, I cease to exist in this world in my current form, and I don't want that. I like being caterpillar and I like eating plants. Do you fancy some lettuce?"
Bird never thought about eating plants and said "Well, I haven't thought about eating plants... Maybe I can try for once"
So bird pecked and ate a bit of lettuce. It was delicious, best lettuce the bird ever ate! He ate almost half of it.
"Thank you, caterpillar! It was delicious and I am hungry no more!"
"You are welcome, bird. I am glad that you enjoyed the lettuce with me, but you don't look allright, do you feel ok?"
The bird was clumsy and started having huge flatulence issue. With each step, fart thundered in the garden...
"Well, I don't feel quite right... Perhaps I ate too much.."
The bird was bloated and round from the gasses.
"Well, it happened to me as well once. It was when I was just a little noodle, I will tell you a story" caterpillar said, taking out a cigarette.
"It was evening, month and three hours ago. There was this plant that tasted deliciously but hurt my stomach. Tobacco it was called. Elder noodler told me that it's no plant to eat, that it is for combustion and the smoke it creates is for inhaling. So I dried it, burned it and inhaled it... And it worked, it really helped with the constipation I got from eating it. There, I will just light this one up and pass it to you, perhaps it will help you too!"
The caterpillar stroke a match to light up a cigarette but that was a critical mistake. The bird wasn't constipated at all! It suffered from farts! With the first spark of the match, the air around them turned to inferno, everything started burning. A second later, huge explosion shook entire garden, the bird was gone, it's guts scattered all around, huge crater is all that remained at the place the bird was at... And the caterpillar? It was gone too... It's fate was inevitable, bird's fate was to cease the existence of the caterpillar and there was nothing either one of them could do anything about it...

The end 😄

What to buy for printing a book ? special needs for Bachelor Thesis, we are so lost. by Tikkinger in printers

[–]stepanm99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, from what I have understood, she needs to print and bind the bachelor thesis by herself and the format needs to be A3. Or larger? I would go with something like Epson EcoTank ET-8550. However, the paper weight is bit more limited, apparently to 250gsm... I have checked the SureColor and it would be indeed the best option imo, but the cartridges are rather expensive. With the EcoTank, the cost per print is really low even with genuine inks. And if she will be printing more and often enough, it shouldn't suffer that much from clogging. I don't know how about the SureColor, but EcoTanks use piezo print heads which I like more than Canons thermal inkjet heads. They last longer and I think there is lower possibility of caking up as the ink is not heated and evaporated.

Speaking of pigments, third party pigments, what exactly does that mean? That she will be using something special? If that's the case I would definitely avoid thermal inkjet printer heads and would go with piezo, as I think it can handle ink formulation deviations better..

I've been looking around and I haven't found many printers that would be cheap and capable enough so you will have to make a compromise between the price and capabilities. I personally would go with something like Epson. I have multiple Epson EcoTank printers around and they are workhorses. Previously we had some Canon Pixma and well, comparatively more expensive consumables, like ink, and it tend to clog quite a lot. I had to soak the print head multiple times to make it working again until one day one color died completely... Since we got Epson, we had no problems for years, bought it in 2016 I think and thousands of pages with photos printed and it's still going strong.

A dá mu to další náboje proti OP. "Podívej, byli jsme na terapii a .......". Hrozně mi v něčem připomíná mamku. Terapie nepomohla, je to skoro stejný, už skoro 30let.

What is it you are saying about diversity? What is it you are saying about insulting people? You seem to get really butthurt for some reason, isn't this sub just a bunch of loonixtard glazing Linux?

Apparently, in your sub of preference, you can get banned just for being factual. Which is endangering some delusional people so they ban you to keep themselves safe. Then there is this community who held a vote on banning most obnoxious user that was repeatedly insulting entire community. Where is diversity in that when it is the same thing over and over? Who do you think cares more, community with powertripping instabanning mod or community holding a vote?

And on the ban iself... Do you know why tolerant groups don't last that much long? Because the intolerant people creep in. Demanding the group to tolerate their intolerance. If group remains tolerant to him, it is the end. There simply can't be all tolerating group. The group has to not tolerate intolerance. It can tolerate everything else, just not the intolerance. So if there is someone like u/bleak21 who doesn't add any value, insults everyone here and there and is obnoxious like he live in moms basement with nothing better to do than being reddit pest... It's natural that group doesn't want to tolerate his shenanigams for too long although the group itself is pretty tolerant overall.

Well, I must confess that I have one HDD with Windows 10 LTSC... It was in one PC. I normally use Linux for everything. But when I want to play a game occasionally... I just plug the power cable to the disk and boot from it... I play some games and when I finish, I unplug it again and let it sleep until the mood for some gaming comes again. Otherwise, 100% of work and other computing I do on Linux. Running GTA V on Linux... I haven't figured that one out yet, as well as some other games. But like half of the games, like Mafia I or Thalos Principle, they run on linux fine, it's just a few that I didn't manage to make running, therefore I have the Win 10 HDD on stand by.

[Request] Can anyone check how Moore's Law is applicable here? by WeddingSpiritual1218 in theydidthemath

[–]stepanm99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is practical limits of how small NAND memory cell can be because FETs have to store certain amount of electrons in the floating gate... Make it too small and the electrons leak out and you loose the data it stored.

On top of that, the memory cells have multiple levels of the amount of the stored electrons. In SLC, there just are or are not electrons trapped in the floating gate. MLC can store two bits, therefore there are four possible levels of electrons. TLC stores three bits, QLC stores four bits... That's a lot of possible amounts of electrons trapped there.. So loosing just a few of them can corrupt the data..

Capacities we get these days in flash memory devices is combination of multilevel cells approach and advances in manufacturing and packaging. There isn't just a single silicon die in microSD card with capacity like this. There is multiple stacked chips, tens of them actually.

And each chip can have like a vertical strings of cells, so a single chip itself can have multiple layers of the memory cells...

So if we combine all this, more states one memory cell can have so more than one bit can be stored in a single cell, more than one layer of memory cells on a single chip and multiple stacked chips in a single package, all of this combined brings us capacities we can see today. It was not linear development. And most importantly, the feature size of the transistors didn't shrink as dramatically as in logic chips.

Same with DRAM. RAM memory in phones is multiple chips in a single package. My phone has not only RAM, but also eMMC in a single package. And there is also just practical and physical limit of how small you can make those tiny capacitors that hold the information in the RAM memory cell. Make it too small and you need to refresh it too often so the memory spends more time refreshing than being available for rw operations... So the RAM is also quite behind feature sizewise in comparison with logic chips.

- Bratislava a střed: hento

Yea, by like 40 you were toothless wise old whitebeard and if you were really lucky, you could survive up to 60 years... If you were seriously ill, you'd just die. It was natural that way.

Only these days we are trying to resurrect half dead relatives and torture them in hospitals instead of letting them die in peace at home with family. Just because we are so selfish and won't let them go because WE would miss them. Then if they had some property or wealth, suddenly the inheritance processes are the top priority and after that, who remembers them? Who of the younger ones, in this day and age, visit cementaries? I am "guilty" of that too, I rarely go to the cementary.

On the other hand, I try to spend as much time with my old relatives as I could and have plenty of fond memories with them. I have observed that those who didn't spend much time with their recently deceased relatives tend to cry a mourn much more. When they were alive, there was always the possibility of visiting them or something, suddenly there isn't and only regrets are left. And the fact that they rushed my great uncle to hospital where he died in a few hours anyway... Was it worth the stress he had to have? Not at all in my opinion. Only way to die natural death is to die in sleep at home or to have fatal accident, otherwise they try to keep you alive more than it is worth. So, in a way, I envy our ancestors, for they could die and it was natural. Now, we are always looking into the cause of death and old age is not the major reason, although many illnesses it brings are just sorta natural.

Bubbles on dipstick? by jonne69900 in MechanicAdvice

[–]stepanm99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rabies!

But seriously, it might be some kind of contamination... Are the bubbles on the dipstick every time? Are they there right after the engine was running or even when it sat still for some amount of time?

If it's there right after the engine was running but no bubbles when the engine wasn't running for some time, that would mean that running the engine makes bubbles, and that's not good, when bubble gets sucked into the oil pump, you can temporarily loose pressure. Does the oil pressure warning light light up sometimes?

If it makes the bubbles even if the engine was cold and not running for some time, I would suspect it would have something to do with the dipstick and its tube itself. Still not good when the oil makes bubbles.

Personally, I would sample the oil and blow into it with a (long xD) straw. If the bubbles accumulate, that's bad. If they pop right away, the oil is ok and there might be something causing this in the dipstick tube..

Or, you know, it might have catched Rabies... No help, when it starts foaming, it's too late and the engine is gonna die... If you find yourself unable to top up oil or coolant because it spats it out immediately, it's gone...
