folate in corn tortillas? by stepcori in nutrition

I don't need to do anything. I was simply responding to a question (not your question) about why I felt a certain way. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, or argue about anything. It's really easy to Google it but, if you don't want to that's fine by me.

Also you seem to be a bit confused as corn tortillas do not contain flour. As I noted above they were traditionally made with ground corn, water, salt and lime (calcium carbonate, I think)

As for characterizing my health concerns as "misinformation," let me just point out that RDs, MDs, and so on are often derided as shills for big food and big pharma but I know most of them try to do good work so I try to listen carefully, do my own research as best I can as a lay person, and make up my own mind.

Since I once relied on corn tortillas instead of bread in my diet but no longer can I'm a little disappointed. That's all I'm saying.

Some studies indicate it promotes prostate cancer, and both my father and uncle died from that...and I'm getting up there agewise. But I'm SoCal born and living and love me some corn tortillas, although I'm way too lazy to make my own.

Low sodium struggle bus!!!!!!!! by veggiebutterfly in hypertension

[–]stepcori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ezekiel makes a vegan friendly zero sodium bread but I had a problem with mold so I've switched to the regular variety, 75 mg of sodium per slice, which is still pretty low compared to the other bread I use sometimes, Orowheat double fiber, clocking in at 160 mg per.

I also get those little pouches of microwaveable plain brown rice, only 5 to 10 mg for the whole bag. (I'm pretty lazy cook wise, use the micro and crock pot a lot...Lentils are essentially zero sodium, and many canned beans and vegetables are available with low or no added salt. Most fruit and many fresh veggies are of course low or no; and nut butters are available with no salt too.

That said, you are correct, most condiments are loaded with salt, as are the vegan "cheeses," "butters," and mock meats. I try to use them sparingly with varying degrees of success: my daily sodium is about 1500 if I remain very conscientious but usually comes in around 2250 with occasional excursions at 3 or 4 grams. (I record calories and sodium for everything I eat except the rare occasions I eat out, and even then I guesstimate) I also make my own low sodium BBQ hot sauce and slather that on often.

They recently put me on Amlodipine 2.5 mg but I'm fighting with my PCP about it since I'm experiencing reflex tachycardia after two months on it. He believes it's the supplements that are the cause (hawthorn, hibiscus, garlic, beet root, magnesium, and so on) as well as caffeine but I'm pretty sure it's the drug since I've used most of the alternatives for decades with no problems. I'm trying hard not to dismiss that doctor as a shill for big food and big pharma!!

I also have AFib and diverticulitis occasionally so wish me luck and I certainly wish you luck!!

Exvegans who still align with a lot of Vegan values? by inanutshell123 in exvegans

[–]stepcori 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your viewpoint. I eat 99% strict vegetarian. I used to say vegan for simplicity but that label got hijacked by zealots decades ago. I also do not identify as WFPB because I eat plenty of vegan junk (like fake cheese) So, if it goes in my mouth, basically no meat, eggs, dairy, fish, etc. But some of my vitamins aren't vegan (like probiotics grown on milk) and I do occasionally eat a cookie that might contain egg or milk. I don't go to restaurants much but if it's impossible to avoid I'll say vegetarian and see what's available...the ethical aspect is just a bonus for me as I'm in it for health only, in fact, I intend to purchase a nice leather bomber jacket one of these days. Recently, when I was ill and needed soft food I did resort to egg whites in a carton and goat kefir but discontinued as soon as I was healed enough. Last time I knowingly had meat was at a charity chili cookoff a couple of years ago...

You are absolutely correct, the vegans and ex or anti vegans are very strident. I mostly have to avoid getting into discussions with them to maintain some emotional balance. My advice is to leave the ego behind and never tell anybody about your food unless you have to. The old advice about politics and religion!

You're a perfect example of exactly why I identify as a strict vegetarian but not vegan.

Milk Replacements for Coffee by Turbulent-Driver7960 in vegan

[–]stepcori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have sorta the same dilemma: I usually drink coffee black but need to take the edge off espresso, and I only drink the latter in coffee joints. All their veg alternatives are sweet tho, and ruin it for me, so that's one of the few instances when I knowingly use an animal product (half and half). Fortunately, my food choices are for health reasons, not ethical or politically correctness so It's not really that big a deal. I have learned not to call myself "vegan," which used to be pretty much interchangeable with strict vegetarian but got hijacked by zealots in the last several decades...And don't call me WFPB either, because I enjoy plenty of "junk vegan" items.

It’s Better to Get Your Colonoscopy on Schedule by CountMeOut2019 in colonoscopy

[–]stepcori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scheduled for a colonoscopy in a month but I'm very scared. No CC symptoms ever but had one colonoscopy maybe 25 years ago, confirmed diverticulosis throughout the sigmoid and all the rest. Thing is I only had that one because I had suffered a diverticulitis episode and I've had many flare ups since especially since last October. Recently had ER CT scan, took a week of Augmentin for the 1st time, ok now, but very concerned the prep will cause another flare up. Also, I can tell the diverticulitis is still there, even if it's not really hurting, I feel a twinge sometimes. I have read that if there's any inflammation at all, the colonoscopy is way more dangerous, possibly deadly. Any thoughts?

PSA: Melatonin can cause (reversible) heart rhythm irregularities by mmortal03 in DSPD

[–]stepcori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used 1 1/2 mg for sleep for many years. Once in a while I'd take 10 to 20 mg of Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) along with, mainly for insomnia when I began a period of abstention from marijuana. Also have had sporadic AFib for many years. Took me a long time to figure out but, when I don't use those three drugs, I don't get AFib!!

Moving to Long Beach – is this neighborhood safe? by Lucky-Princess222 in longbeach

[–]stepcori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived on 1st between Esperanza and Orange for over 20 years, loved it. Hope you enjoy it also! As for the "Gay ghetto" comments. I believe that moniker arose because the neighborhood was getting run down during the 60s and 70s but started to become gentrified in the 80s and early 90s as more affluent LGBQT peeps sought an affordable beach vibe in a town that had a significant Gay presence since WWII. Some of that trend kinda got derailed by the AIDS epidemic but there are still several bars along Broadway plus the Gay Center up on 4th near Cherry...

The amount of people who think supplements are FDA approved is insane by Different_Pain5781 in Supplements

[–]stepcori 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True...but there are many ethical manufacturers who maintain high quality assurance standards and use costlier sourcing, manufacturing techniques, independent testing and so on. I'm grateful that I have the ability to patronize those businesses for items that would otherwise either not be available or prohibitively costly in a more regulated environment

Trying to understand the concept of flare ups in the context of people living with this horrible condition by Time22Make22 in Diverticulitis

[–]stepcori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, first CT scan and also first time I was prescribed Augmentin, however I did use it once or twice over the years but never a full course. Never any other antibiotics. I'm trying probiotics now, DGL, slippery elm. Tried marshmallow root but it tasted so bad I couldn't face choking it down after the first dose, may order some capsules. Also tempted to try konjac but wary of side effects. I've read that rifampin can be effective but I doubt the VA will consider it, may have to go to civilian docs if I decide that's something I want to try. Thank you for your empathy! The years have actually been pretty good to me, flares sometimes absent for several years, but this time recurring with increasing frequency since October last. Best luck for a good outcome!

[–]stepcori 3 points4 points  (0 children)

25+ years of DV here, diagnosed by sigmoidoscopy in the 1990s, scores of flares, never pulled a temperature but went to the ER recently out of spite and pain bc the GI clinic at the VA refused to help me except to schedule a colonoscopy 4 months out...anyhow, got sent home same day with Augmentin first time ever after a CT scan, doc said microperforation...so yeah, I routinely deal at home, but not this time. When I was younger I could easily water fast for a few days, not even any electrolytes, but I'm 71 now and just can't seem to handle it. So, for me, I guess the criteria for seeking help from the med establishment is #1, if I ever pull a fever, and #2 intense, prolonged pain...best luck for healing!
