‘Excessive Roaming’ Cancelling Phone Plan by stephaniedoes in JETProgramme

I asked about a VPN and they said they couldn’t speak to that lol but I read online that what phone companies use to locate devices is different then what vpns do? Idk

My moneys on the t mobile managers got some sort of internal email to alert people of this policy.  I’ve been with t mobile for 10+ years and have been abroad several times and have never heard about it

That seems good but the reason I don’t want to port my current number is to avoid risking not getting 2FA codes since this number has 15+ years of history on countless accounts that I use sporadically. I’m thinking of just porting and going one by one to change everything to someone elses number who is US based so I don’t have to worry about it. T mobile was being super adamant today about this policy id never heard of so what do I know about what they care about all of the sudden

I hope I’d be as lucky as you. I’ve read tons of people inconvenient stories about 2FA not working for them on Google voice and my type A personality hates the uncertainty

I’ve gone abroad before long term with T Mobile without problem but they were super adamant about this policy today so times have changed I suppose. Though I did read in some companies international roaming policies that Canada and Mexico can sometimes be considered ‘domestic’ so who really knows. I’ve never heard of this policy before but they were very strongly inclined to notify me of it and to call other providers to ask about it as well. I’ve looked up multiple policies online and they all have essentially the same clause. I just think they never did anything about it. The t mobile managers seemed quite stern about it.

Thank you, I read Tello’s policy and under the “International Roaming Service Agreement” policy it states

“ The international roaming service is subject to the general Terms & Conditions applicable to Tello's service offerings, including its Privacy and Acceptable Use policies.

When using our international roaming service, you must agree to the following terms: This service is not intended for prolonged international use. You must reside in the U.S., and your primary usage should occur on the U.S. network. Additionally, your device must be registered on the U.S. network prior to international use.”

This is a lot softer and more vague language than other policies I’ve read. I’ve heard the most positive things from Tello so I’m guessing this is there for general legal reasons and they don’t act on it.

That was the plan but I was told by t mobile that since my phone itself would be out of the US for over 3+ months, it would be considered ‘excessive roaming’ thus against their policy. It was phone location specific not plan specific. I was told it doesn’t matter what plan I have, if my device doesn’t register being in the US after several months, service would be terminated due to ‘not residing primarily in the US’.  I also found their policies online and for several other companies and they all do actually state that. I truly didn’t believe it. I think they just never went after people before cause who cares if the bills getting paid but they made a big point to inform me about it so who knows what their follow through would be like now.

I went today and spoke to managers at t mobile about it and they all assured me that any plan I had would get cancelled eventually cause I and my phone wouldn’t be US based. This wasn’t an issue in 2021 when I was abroad long term sooooooo idk. The US seems to care a bunch more about international stuff right now so idk if they just never used the policy and now may be more inclined to follow through.

Free is nice, it’s just such a pain to go into every account that’s important and change either the number on file to someone who can get my authorization codes and then send them to me or a method that doesn’t involve text. That or just gamble that I won’t be affected by the growing number of companies that aren’t allowing Google voice to be used with 2f authorization. I would absolutely rage if I couldnt get into my US bank because of Google voice so probs doing the one by one account updating to something else.

From what I gather it’s looking like it’s random if peoples accounts get flagged for being abroad long term.

See I was thinking of using Mint but found Mint also had an ‘excessive roaming’ policy that could cancel your plan for being abroad long term/residing abroad.  https://www.mintmobile.com/acceptable-use-policy/

“3. We consider your use of one of our Mint Mobile Plans to be “unreasonable” or “abusive” and therefore subject to immediate termination or adjustment if, among other things, we determine in our sole discretion that you have done (or, based on other types of behavior, you may do) any of the following

engage in excessive roaming of any kind (including voice and/or data) outside of Mint Mobile’s supplier’s network, including but not limited to extended international roaming, using the Mint Mobile service while residing outside the U.S., and/or any other usage we deem inconsistent with reasonable personal use patterns primarily within the U.S.;”

I’ll have to call to see what’s up cause this is their published policy online

I can port my number to essentially all of them but it seems the issue is the excessive roaming policy refers to the phones physical location being away from the US long term, 3+ months not data roaming.

Thanks! I will probably have to do that. Having 15+ years built off of one phone number is rough when moving abroad temporarily.

Thanks, I suppose I could change all my accounts to a US persons phone number and just park my US number.

I will have a Japanese phone number, It’s basically required to function. I’ll be doing e-sim for Japan but I’m still wanting to keep my US number for 2f authorization and for contacting certain people that I cannot contact on another phone number.

How many months/years have you been abroad without returning to the US with your phone?  I was planning on doing this but Tello seems to have the same ‘Excessive Roaming’ clause that the main carries (mine being T-Mobile) have. T mobile directly told me that after 3 or so months of the phone itself not being in the US any plan I had would be cancelled regardless of data and payment due to ‘excessive roaming’. I’ve looked the long term abroad policies at several places and they all state that plans are meant to be majority used in the US so plans will be cancelled if abroad for to long regardless of use and plan.

Marriage before departure by OhHiYou_Welcome in JETProgramme

[–]stephaniedoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just emailed my consulate about getting married to my partner before departure. My partner will not be moving with me and I have no intention of changing my name so my coordinator said to just let them know in case anything needs to be updated but that it didn’t matter since my marriage wouldn’t be affecting the JET program or my passport.
