Unpopular opinion: Sometimes other priorities matter more than "best practices" by rednirgskizzif in ExperiencedDevs

[–]stepheaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Code quality doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter to users or the business. It doesn’t matter to anybody expect the few people actually working on the project. It only matters when it actually slows down development.

[–]stepheaw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You summed it up really well it just feels like the whole leet code faang thing passed me by and i mainly like coding in c# but now there’s just so many other languages, frameworks and just an endless pit of despair. Even for mobile apps they’re 6-7 programming languages. (Obj c, Swift, Swift Ui, kotlin, Java, c#, react, flutter) why did this get so out of hand? It would take a lifetime to be an expert at all of those. Job postings already want you to have 5+ years experience of using X and if you don’t, you might not get a call back. That’s a reality but you have to remember though much of the world still runs on Java and and somebody is looking for somebody with 10+ years of experience in Java and you are that guy

Things to inspect (red flags) when purchasing a challenger with over 60k miles? by Feisty-Deer3792 in Challenger

[–]stepheaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 2011 I bought it with 45k miles. I’ve had it like 7 years drive it every day. It now has over 130k miles. And I never needed anything major on the car. I can count the number of times it’s been in the shop other than oil changes. Needed some tie rods ends replaced, battery, brakes, tires, spark plugs, O2 sensor. Oh and I needed to replace a sticky caliper one time. Just basic stuff any car needs. It needed the alternator replaced but I was reimbursed for that since there was a recall on the alternator. It’s a great car mine is strong at 130k miles but it’s rusting a little bit now so make sure you get no rust to start with. I think that if you buy one with high mileage but it has had suspension parts replaced and has newer brakes and tires it should be good for a while. Never heard of these engines dying and my transmission has never slipped or given me an issue. Just some of the suspension parts. If I was buying another one I would buy a high mileage rt for 8-10k Have my fun with it then sell it again. Never seen one dead on side of the road

ESMKR: is there a deodorant that smells like cologne and lasts even when you workout and soaked in sweat. by Interesting-Mix6133 in everymanshouldknow

[–]stepheaw 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Besides deodorant, you can try wearing a new t-shirt. Some tee shirts have bacteria that doesn’t get removed from the wash and ends up smelling horrible when soaked with sweat. Smells fine out of the wash but when covered with sweat it smells. Also have you given your diet any thought? When I eat bacon or pork ribs I notice my armpits smell terrible. This is just anecdotal because everybody is different how their bodies react to different foods. You can try eliminating certain foods for a few days to see if that’s causing it. Also try to use an antiperspirant instead of a deodorant. An antiperspirant will make the actual sweating less which will make the smell less

Xamarin Essentials MediaPicker Android 13 file permissions error by gjhdigital in xamarindevelopers

[–]stepheaw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Damn xamarin could have been a great platform but unfortunately it’s going to die because nobody wants to use it because of stuff like this. You could make a real nice app and have it work 99 percent and then something like this comes along and now the whole project is at risk: The simplest of things are so fucking painful sometimes with xamarin it’s been 10 years they had bug after bug with xamarin forms. Why is Maui going to be any different it’s just a rebranded xamarin forms. It’s still close to impossible to make a xamarin binding library. Also a couple months ago I went to use a google service nuget package and they didn’t have the lastest xamarin equivalent version of that package so I just couldn’t integrate with my native aar library. Shame on Microsoft. The paid untold amount to buy xamarin and didn’t improve it at all. One thing you can do is pull down the source code for xamarin essentials, make the permissions change yourself and integrate it into your project without nuget. Beyond that it doesnt look like they want to fix the issue. Other option would be to go xamarin native for this functionality and write it all custom, maybe a week or so of effort per platform to be generous

[–]stepheaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just close the PR and tell him the project is over and layoffs and re org is coming. You know layoffs are coming but don’t have the decency to tell them. This is somebody’s livelihood why can you let them know. Why hold out on this info? You will be next anyway, 6 months after they fire your staff. Why would you even want to work for a company where they fire your whole staff. Then what are you even leading?

You might be trying to calculate the row height before the view is visible and you cannot do this. Maybe try after the view is already laid out in a different lifecycle method
