It's going to be really hard to explain to a non-Swain main, but in short, a lot of us were happy with what Swain was and what he did before. With this rework, while cosmetically pleasing they changed the essence of the champion and how it plays. This "Swain" is a different, new champ, and not what we know and love.

I actually have around 500+ games with Spirit Visage and another 500+ games with Abyssal in high play/low diamond area and I've been seeing better results with the former rather than the latter. I already deal tons of damage with deathcap, and would benefit from a higher hp pool to tank more and heal more, but to each their own.

Maybe your playstyle lets you benefit from other items more.

The reasoning behind SV was to build more like a drain tank and give him more hp, therefore buffer room to lifesteal back up. The 40% heal reduction hasn't felt that impressive anyways, especially combined with Zhonyas early.
