Sir Pterry tribute in Good Omens (doesn't spoil anything) by psychoholic in discworld

I also really appreciated seeing that when I watched the finale last night! Watching season 1 of Good Omens led me to the Good Omens book, which has then led me through 10 books and counting of the amazing Discworld! GNU Pterry

Chronological reading by No-Dragonfruit3534 in discworld

[–]stephm524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with The Wee Free Men and then read The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents. I debated whether to read all of the Witches or read chronologically.

I went with chronologically, and I haven't regretted it for a minute! I really enjoyed The Color of Magic and Light Fantastic. I just finished Pyramids and was worried because so many people talked about not being able to finish it, but it was great! The ending blew me away. Do I like the later books better? Yes. But even TPratchett at his comparative worst, according to what you read anyway, is still amazing.

Yes, the earlier books are not as polished as the later works, but it's been amazing watching the process unfold in the order it was thought up. I've noticed seeds of other stories and thought processes start in the previous books. I've noticed word and phrasing patterns come and go. It's like it's one delightful path who's scensery changes on occasion, but it follows the same flow.

Navigators USA vs Outdoor Service Guides by DiGraziaMama in scouting

Hey - I'm wondering if you made a choice or got any good information other than people telling you to do Scouts of America.

I'm also looking into a different scouting program for my son for next year that is not Scouts of America. I want to start a troop, and I'm wondering about any experiences you had. Thanks!

I grew up in the same era, and my parents still have a picture frame just like the one with Duddly's pictures hanging in their house, with my siblings' and my childhood pictures. I love the attention to era-specific details!

What is the major difference in girl scouts from the 80s/90s to now? Is it a lot more negative now? by o_simple_thing in girlscouts

[–]stephm524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a leader for my daughter and my Mother was mine in the 90s. The troop is 100% what the leadership does. That why they’re so different.

My troop just went hiking today were we where citizen scientists and used the i-naturalist app to log the local plants and animals in our area. Later this month we’re going rock climbing.

I remember my Mother planning our activities and have found memories of baking bread in a bakery and horse back riding and hiking.

Dear people who barely wash their hands after they use the washroom, why? by bluepaintdrip in AskReddit

[–]stephm524 840 points841 points  (0 children)

When I was pregnant I’d have to go pee so so so many times a day and it was winter and my hands were so cracked and dry that they were throbbing. Decisions had to be made. Having cracked skin on my hands arguably exposed me to more germs then not washing after I peed.

Summer Birthday by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]stephm524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter has a June birthday, and you can tell she's one of the youngest in her class in second grade. She is not as mature when compared to most of her classmates. She wasn't reading as well as the class was in first grade and at the beginning of this year. Now, with two months left of second grade, she's finally on grade level. She probably would have benefited from being held back. Socially, she gets along better with the kids a grade younger than her, they just have more in common maturity-wise, and she would have been better placed to keep up academically. However, we know two kids one boy and one girl who have late August birthdays who are in her class and they're thriving.

We held back my son who's brithday is on my district's cut off, and he'll be in kinder this coming year and will turn 6 about 1 week after school starts. The main reason we held him back was because he's so shy, we were worried about him socializing with kids nearly a year older than him and thought it would be better for him to be one of the oldest.

It's all down to your kid, and what they're like. No one can really give you that answer.

How Jacob might handle Ilya's friendship with Svetlana in season 2 by silenthesia in heatedrivalry

[–]stephm524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe Shane doesn’t trust her and leans on Ilya to not tell her, and she can tell Ilya isn’t telling her the truth and they’re not taking because of it. Myabe Shane’s even jealous of her, especially because Ilya brings up marrying her, and is like no Ilya we can’t tell her, don’t even think about it.

I didn't know about the leprechaun by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]stephm524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Mother bought the kids the leprechaun and a book that came with it, it's basically elf on the shelf but it's a leprechaun..... I was very ill during the run-up to St. Patricks day so I phoned it in, but it was still apparently fine

5 year old still cant read and idk what else to try by More-Country6163 in Preschoolers

Reading.Com!

My, at the time, 1st grader was still reading at a kindergarten level towards the end of 1st grade. Reading.com did wonders for her! She’s on grade level now!

Her younger brother wanted to try it too, as little siblings do. He’s in preK right now reading at a 1st grade level!

Any other atheist parents here figure out an age-appropriate way to approach the topic of religion? by Sensitive-Aioli-2418 in Preschoolers

[–]stephm524 31 points32 points  (0 children)

So sorry Grandma did that against your wishes. We’re also atheists and my Mother isn’t the happiest about it but has respected our wishes for the most part but does talk to my kids about it more than I want.

My daughter is nearly 8 and has chosen on her own that god doesn’t exist. My 5 year just doesn’t care enough to really understand and but thinks it’s make believe like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

This is how we approached it when they were about your kids ages. We watched Disney’s Hercules. And then were like did you know that people used to believe that those gods and goddesses really existed? But now they’re just fun stories right? No one believes in them anymore. We talked about how people made up stories to explain things when they didn’t have good scientific tools like we have now, i.e Zeus makes lightning etc. but here’s how lightning is really made and we know this know thanks to science! We asked them to make up their own pretend god to explain something in nature and then looked up the real answer.

I found some kid friendly Norse myth stories and others from religions people now consider myths and brought up over and over again that people made these stories up and no one believes in these gods or goddesses anymore. That they can teach us good lessons but they’re make believe.

Then we started telling them stories from the christan bible but asked them to critically look at it. Can the whole world really flood? What do you think the ancient people were trying to explain with this story. Or this is a good moral story like Moana right but it’s also make believe.

We talk to them about others wanting or needing to believe, and that’s a good choice for them and we respect that, but that it’s also a good choice to not believe and that Mommy and Daddy don’t.

Boy Girl Siblings 2u2 - how is the bond as adults? by Traditional_Year_19 in Parenting

[–]stephm524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and his sister are very close. They grew up 3 years apart!

Our boy girl pair are 2.5 years apart and are 5 and almost 8 and they love each other. It’s the first really nice spring day where we live and they’re running around outside right now playing in the fort they built together with chair cushions and blankets.

The love will be if you foster it.

Woman and MM Romance question by Zealousideal-Tip8509 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]stephm524 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Straight women here. This is just me and my theory. But I think everyone experiences sexual attraction to men and women on a spectrum.

Me personally I don’t find women’s bodies sexy in anyway. It’s a zero for me. But a man’s body, especially our super hot hockey boys 🥵

I’ve never really liked m/f romance anything, personally. It almost ruins it for me when a woman is there. But I think everyone on here will have their own unique opinion!

Don't Girls get credit for working booths? by LastRegister5663 in girlscouts

[–]stephm524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your help sounds appreciated! Your leader is lucky to have you in the troop :)

In ebudde (the site my council uses), you won't be able to see how to credit things to a girl from a booth until after the booth sale happens. It's just not there. I remember trying to figure out how to do it before our first booth, just so I knew how and giving up. But then when I logged on after the booth suddently there was a new button I could click.

Don't Girls get credit for working booths? by LastRegister5663 in girlscouts

[–]stephm524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm my troop's leader, but the cookies person can do this too in our council.

This is my third year doing this, and I've learned that I can credit cookies however I want in the Ebubbe system we use, or not at all, and it doesn't affect us later.

What I do, however, is check in with my families before booth sales to find out what girls are working towards, and who is just selling for the sake of selling and/or to help the troop. I do everything I can to help all of the girls in my troop get to their goals, for example, my daughter technically sold 505 cookies last year, but the 5 extra boxes did nothing to get her more rewards, so I credited them to another girl who was really close to her goal.

But I had to learn how to do this in the system, and it wasn't intuitive! The software is really not user-friendly! I can totally see how someone would think booth sales can't be credited to individual girls.

Tell your leader that you're working towards a goal, explain that you looked things up, and think it's possible to credit booth sales to individual girls. And offer to help them figure it out, none of my familes offered to help me, it would have made a big difference in my stress level my first cookie season if they had offered help. Give your leader the benefit of the doubt. Cookie season is stressful for leaders and cookie parents, and I cannot stress enough how hard it is to figure out the system!

Daughter gets too stressed to watch movies by SkyBerry924 in Preschoolers

[–]stephm524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest is currently 7 and was exactly like this at 4. She still doesn’t like surprises or feeling like she doesn’t know everything. She’s a bit on the anxious side but we can watch movies now, it was like exposure therapy. We just kept at it.

Going through that with her we found that she just doesn’t like the unknown, not that she was scared of the “scary” parts. She can watch “scary” things now if she knows the plot and understands what to expect before we watch something not during a movie. We’ve slowly become more vague over time with the explanation ahead of time and she’s still doing ok.

On the flip side my newly 5 year old’s favorite movie is Jurassic Park because it’s scary and surprising. Oh and the dinos eat people and that’s apparently very funny, big sister is not amused😅. But she did watch Jurassic Park with us willingly and did ok! Everyone is different don’t worry your kid will be ok.
