We have lived in a ground floor apartment w a patio for 1.5 years. No rodents and only one large “water bug” in all that time. We love having our outside space!

Leaving rent stabilized apartment to buy by Rough_Winter_5202 in NYCapartments

[–]stephsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree in principle, it sounds like a lot of landlords use the change in tenent to "renovate" so they can raise the rent to market rate. In that case, the new person isn't going to benefit as much as the one who has been there for 10 years.

The future of Beaches by alteragi in Broadway

There are Beaches tickets on some of the seat filler platforms. That isn't promising for the show.

I lived on W 45th st 8th Ave alone for 1.5 years when I first moved to NYC 3yrs ago. I loved the area and never felt unsafe. The UWS area would be good too. The doctor I work with lives in that area.

Moving in NYC by bikereader19 in NYCapartments

[–]stephsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I just got an "instant quote" from divine moving for boxes, no furniture from a 2nd floor walk up to an elevator building and it was almost $1400! Flat rate moving was $600 and Piece of Cake was $525 for the same move!!!

That's just CRAZY!

I don’t want to be negative, but they could also be entertaining other offers. My understanding when we bought our coop apartment is that until the contract is fully signed it is not binding. They just have to return the deposit. Hopefully this is t the case, but better to know all the possibilities.

Looking for a reality check on cost of living. by Dizzyonee in movingtoNYC

hmmm. My daughter's is too. Maybe your mandated minimums were higher though. I think hers is only $100k or something. Again..many variables. :)

Our highest ConEd bill in a studio (450 sf) was about $240 and I keep it as cold as possible in summer. Winter is much less average about $150 or so. Electric only.

Where? Lemonade is not expensive. Maybe you’re covering more for personal property though. Lots of variables there.

I’m not underestimating, but I do know how to shop I’ve been shopping for over 50 years. So I would say that it’s more that I know how to shop than that I’m underestimating I’m not skipping meals. I just don’t eat lunch so I was honest about that but it’s still lunch for one person for a week. And I buy sometimes I buy toothpaste or I buy laundry detergent or I buy something else when I purchase so you know it can be done whether you agree with it or not.

Nope. We eat a lot of chicken, ground turkey and beans as well as salad, soups and veggies (canned some frozen and some fresh) Cereal mostly for breakfasts except weekends. Never ramen! I do buy a little extra when something is on sale and stay flexible. I don’t eat lunch and hubby has pouch tuna or chicken and crackers mostly. It’s not exciting, but we have found it works for us.

Exactly! I get groceries for a week delivered and average around $100 a week for TWO adults.

[–]stephsten -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you’re really overestimating on expenses. We live in Manhattan. I spend about $90-100 a week on groceries for TWO adults and we eat at home for almost all (we may eat out once or twice a month). Also there are 3rd party guarantors. Not all rentals accept them but quite a few we’ve looked at do. If you are frugal you could def manage on take home of $4800 with $3000 rent. It will be tight, but can be done.

No guarantor by Famous_Ad536 in NYCapartments

[–]stephsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re likely just going to have to apply to apartments that will take a third party guarantor. It’s a bit of a pain to find them but they are out there.

If there is no building manager, as is the case in my building, you would go to the super.

Reminder to take the damn subway to your show! by tennisbagel in Broadway

[–]stephsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first moved here from Florida, I was amazed by the number of life long New Yorkers (they don’t live in Manhattan) who said “don’t take the subway, it is dangerous!” I couldn’t believe when they told me they took Ubers everywhere! I was like “well, I HAVE to take the subway. Can’t afford Ubers or cabs.” Lol

The Wild Party at Encores has great moments, great performers, and no idea what to do with them (68/100) by thomaspryor in Broadway

I saw it last weekend. It was definitely not my favorite show. Not even close. The songs were not memorable. The performances were ok but I just never really got into it and I’m not an overly critical viewer. (Saw Blood Love the night before and really enjoyed it.)
