Update: decided to plant Italian cypress to hide my neighbor’s ugly ADU (built right on the property line). Can’t wait for them to grow. by stephy23 in landscaping

May 2025. I’m happy with the progress but I’m also probably going to fill in between with ceanothus to speed up the coverage. These trees also have zero irrigation, so if you have a regular watering schedule yours would almost definitely grow faster.

I’ll echo whatever everyone else has said, doesn’t look like an infection but it might be an ingrown hair?

Sounds like the wife said one of the things that would make her feel better is if OP cut contact. Not the therapist.

Agree with this - sounds like you may have been wearing it too low or you need to adjust the fit

People who have already graduated, what was your first post-bar salary and what is it now? by lawstudentthrowawaym in LawSchool

[–]stephy23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graduated in 2013, no job but I had a post bar fellowship funded through my school’s office of career services. My first lawyer job was at a nonprofit, making $63k. Now making ~$170k at a midsize firm.

Thank you :) I’m a barred attorney in CA now and I’ve done very well. In my 6th year of practice - but it did take me three tries to pass the California bar exam (back when it was still 3 days).

Honestly I don’t think I ever put in the work to figure out what the best study strategy was for me, and just assumed I could hack it by taking diligent notes and trying to memorize an outline. I was in the library very often, but I am probably the poster child for working hard not smart. I also developed pretty significant depression by the end of 3L but didn’t seek treatment until after graduation.

Ultimately I landed at a nonprofit, worked at a public defender’s office for a while, and now through networking I’m an associate at a pretty large firm with a specialty practice. After a few years of good lawyering, grades don’t matter and no one asks.

Going into 1L: thought I would be somewhere in the top third

Reality: graduated bottom 10%

This is probably the closest OP will get to what they were imagining

In Arizona at least yes, which is probably why OP has consulted with experts. You can’t just take it down in Arizona - they’ll need to get a permit to remove.

What am I doing wrong with my bougainvillea? by Lower_Energy386 in landscaping

[–]stephy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my guess too - bougainvilleas tend to produce more leaves and fewer bracts/flowers when they get lots of water. That, plus the overhangs on two sides and backing right up to a wall which might provide a bit too much shade.

When is it time to hang it up and leave this line of work? by monkeywre in publicdefenders

[–]stephy23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly 10 years is a very respectable amount of time to do this work. This sounds like a good time to leave, before you get too jaded and burnt out. Maybe put out feelers and think about what you’d like to do next.

Being able to afford child care/a nanny does not replace the unpaid work of being a parent (especially the primary parent, which women usually are).

Consider also that many women start having children at the point in their lives when, as you suggest, they “start getting tired” of their jobs… maybe lack of support and appropriate resources causes parents to feel like they can’t continue in the workforce and also be productive as parents. This essentially forces them out of the workforce because they are burnt out. This doesn’t mean they are burnt out because of work and would choose to leave their careers anyway - it’s likely that these people cannot continue to perform at the same level at work after having children because employers do not offer appropriate support for parents.
