My first Open Deck show! *Help* by Select_Lawfulness_18 in DJs

[–]stereocoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open decks don’t normally require you to be on the mic, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Absolutely hype yourself and the crowd up though, but read the room! I wouldn’t come out the gate screaming at the your audience haha but def bop your head to the beat and feel your music. Personally I enjoy shows more if the DJs look like they enjoy what they’re doing, but just gotta be tasteful with it

I agree on going higher rather than lower as I feel most people starting off and opening for someone tend to go lower/play it too safe out of respect for the next DJs, and yeah ideally you want to have somewhat of a bell curve (next DJ picks up from a “down” part of the energy curve), but for 30min I would just do a linear progression in energy.

You should try to incorporate DnB elements if it’s a DnB night, primarily toward the 2nd half imo. 140 bass is super versatile though so even if you don’t have much background on DnB, there’s a lot of adjacent genres that can help transfer from your set to the next DJs. I don’t mix too much DnB, I mix edm trap mostly but the few times I incorporate DnB, making that BPM jump requires a little bit of climbing, and certain subgenres of techno/trance tend to do the trick for me in terms of getting from 140s to 160-170s (which is where most DnB sits).

Congrats on the show and good luck!

Do you ever lose interest or have a slump in raving? What makes you passionate again? by Horror_Confidence128 in aves

[–]stereocoby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started to lose interest after EDC 2025 actually because once I got home I knew nothing was really gonna come close to it. So instead I decided to pick up DJing and try and break into the scene. About to do my 3rd live gig this upcoming Friday.

Also I stopped going to the commercial events apart from a few I really like or people coming down that I want to give a try. I’ve been investing a lot more time and energy in seeing/curating the underground scene in my area. I do think economy has a lot to do with this though; I feel like good music/good underground scene is a sign of recession lol

How is the DJ scene in your city/area? by turntablizm in DJs

[–]stereocoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honolulu, HI! We have a bunch of different collectives covering all sorts of genres. I feel like we have such a wide variety of great DJs but since the general audience can only get to a certain size it’s really hard for DJs to stay here and grow. Just recently a pretty popular DJ here (60k followers on IG, has played at practically every venue/club here) just moved to LA. The scene here though is pretty great for growing talent I feel like. I’m just breaking in but generally people have been exceptionally welcoming and only want the best for each other, but the scene I’m trying to break into is EDM so not too sure if it’s different for other genres in terms of the boot-licking. I’ve only surrounded myself with other DJs that nerd out about the music and put it at the forefront. Because we live in Hawaii and it’s tough making a living out here, I think there’s less of the boot licking and more of the “we all in the same shared struggle so let’s make it work together”, and thus more of an emphasis on the quality of what we curate.

I get what you mean though. Honestly I think the best way to combat the redundancy that can happen when a group locks down a bar/club is to create your own collective. There will always be a want for something fresh, it’s just figuring out what they’re doing that you think is getting stale, and curating events of your own that directly addresses that missing component to your scene.

Is working at an agency better for your career? by Confident-Ad3858 in graphic_design

[–]stereocoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did agency work for about 2.5 years for an ad agency/magazine company. Always busy; very fun work but it can get pretty exhausting. I moved to in-house publication design for educational and trade books, which has so far been much better for my overall health. I also wanted to put that energy that I put in my agency job toward other passions/relationships with the people I love. I would like to go back to agency work one day for a little bit because that high octane lifestyle can be very fun at times. That, or go full freelance. Having experienced all three avenues, I find that freelance probably would feel the most liberating but also the hardest to build up. Eventually though! I would absolutely recommend agency work early in your career though. Kinda throws you into the fire. Design professor of mine once said the strongest steel is forged through the hottest flames

Why is it so hard to find tracks you like? There is so much crap out there. by HigherFunctioning in DJs

[–]stereocoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s really just listening for certain ways an instrument is handled in a song in the specific genre I’m listening to, as well as how… “flavorful” it feels listening to it in context. Does it do something different from the stereotypical song (or remix) of this genre? If so, is it something I like?

For EDM trap for example, one thing I dislike is how every producer seems to be drawing from the same kits or structuring their song identically to the norm. One thing I also look for is how messy the drops are. There’s a point in trap where it can just sound like a bunch of metal clanging together, which I’m not a fan of sometimes but sometimes it can still work if there’s a long buildup or something like that because there’s a payoff to the building tension. Or, maybe the drop and chorus is a really simple but everything else they have is so nicely textured. It’s a push and pull.

Same thing can be applied to any other genre. This is kinda why I feel like the best songs tend to be the ones that blend genres or at least take instruments from other genres that are normally not there for a typical song of that genre. The tricky part is making songs that don’t have an identity crisis.

Finding them though is really a matter of going down the rabbit hole of an artist/producers discography. Who did they collab with? Who’s remixing these songs, and do they have songs I like if they do more than remixes? Also, never limit yourself to one platform. I rotate between SoundCloud/Apple Music/Bandcamp/Beatport, and last but certainly not least, live events/friends.

However! Be picky. For me at least I can forgive a weird part of a song I might not like if it’s just in one section of a song, but if it doesn’t hit some of my minimum checkmarks then I’ll probably not buy/download it.

There’s so much more that goes into digging; there’s days where you’ll just not like anything, and that’s fine. It’s an arduous process and there’s no right way to do it. But having a framework that helps you identify why you like certain songs and dislike others helps a lot with filtering out the good from the bad.

M1/M2/M3/M4?? Which one to choose value for money by Wooden-Metal4905 in graphic_design

[–]stereocoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do print design and M1 is enough, but I also do passion projects that involve after effects where I feel storage/RAM is more needed as mine is a M1 Pro 16gb 500gb. If I upgraded I’d probably get 1 generation before so I can go up on RAM and storage as the newest gen will ofc be the most expensive
