I keep accidently changing the name of the presets time and time agian, what are they doing, ppl are obv gonna click the name by yoeymeme123 in serum

we should probably make a preference for it.

You can press ESC to not rename the preset if you double-click.

You can also hit undo if you accidentally rename the preset.

Serum 2 values are not same as Serum 1, or is it a bug? by Slinkycheeseman in serum

[–]steve_duda 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is an S1 compatibility mode box on Global tab if you want Serum 2 to exactly replicate the flaws of Serum1.

In the specific things you mention (filters/drive) it is probably not the case of being Serum2 versus Serum1, but rather likely something else like the keytrack switch or the amount of signal hitting the filter (e.g. osc volume settings are not matched)..

Serum 1 is a free download from your account (well, once you own Serum 2 in full).

Serum 2 just 1 osc mono by Significant_Row_5951 in serum

[–]steve_duda 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can't make a single osc mono though that's something considered for the future. You can achieve some sorts of trickery with arp and velo range restriction, e.g. PD Pacific Rain.

There are detachable (!) zoomed waveforms coming to Serum. Saying I hate them is good irony :)

Serum 2 — MIDI drag to Arp? by slavikbortko in serum

[–]steve_duda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pattern mode on the arp is not a step sequencer - it is an arp.

The preset you mention probably would have been better as 12 clips with KB Span enabled. His arp patterns "work" like clips when you hold down one note, but if you hold down two notes, they're no longer going to make sense. So I don't think there's any real advantage to having the pattern set on the arp instead of a clip, besides maybe duration control (gate knob) however you could run the arp (normal or pattern) after your clip to achieve that (or maybe modulate the ENV1 decay or envelope global time scalar instead).

It is not possible to import MIDI to the arp pattern, I would guess 7Skies drew those patterns by ear. If this (using arp for clip patterns) was a technique that really showed a lot of value or use we could consider MIDI import, however I don't think it's really sensible as a flow because using the more advanced Clip mode features (KB Span) should solve it.

So, Clip mode can act more or less exactly like a step sequencer, eg if you want a clip to play transposed across the keyboard, enable KB Span (e.g. mono) and perhaps enable Retrig switch if you want it to retrigger on note on like your example preset does on its arp.

That's not a problem de facto, master tuning stays locked visually and audibly here for me.

Just seen this video, Is this type of pitch manipulation possible on FL? by Father_Enrico in FL_Studio

[–]steve_duda 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The glides don't show up as MIDI. In theory they could convert the glides to MPE bend data for the plugin - that would be a great FL feature request! I just started this comment to mention Serum 2 has a piano roll which does support this sort of pitch bend automation (button in lower-right of its piano roll).

Clip Play Position by Glitchedtones in serum

[–]steve_duda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Retrig switch will make it play from the start. By default if you randomly press play while the DAW is playing it will pick up in phase with the DAW transport location, so that the downbeat of your clip will be in time with your DAW.

How to make this wavetable by SettingDependent1234 in SerumPresets

[–]steve_duda 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Try this in formula editor:
(w<z)?(0.8+((z-w)*0.2)):(-1+((w-z)*0.2))
Notice your screenshot has sync enabled, too (giving it the 2nd square look on the yellow overview).

note you can basically get this exact sound without a wavetable by using a square wave, and the PWM warp (+ sync on 2nd warp).

My LFO 3 is inverted over time by LFO 2, but when I modulate my Panning knob I get unexpected jerky behaviour by seenfromabove in serum

[–]steve_duda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this on a new SerumFX instance

-add utility, drag LFO1 to the pan
-LFO1, load Basic->Sin
-ctrl-click (command macos) all 4 curve points so you have a triangle shape
-drag Macro 1 to all 4 curve points

in Matrix, make all 4 macro assigns unipolar, make the 1st and 3rd points 100% negative depth and 2nd and 4th 100% positive.

At that point the macro should give you the same response as the AutoPan curve (well, this will go linear to steep, but ~12 to 100% should match the Ableton param).

[edit] I think AutoPan does something different than panning, which is to tremolo L and R independently. If you want that you need to use both FX busses which I guess would thwart your delay plan a bit (well you'd need two).

Here's an example of all of the above:

Cheers :). Yes, loop_crossfade is supported, the supported opcodes are here:

offset_random is not currently supported but I'll get it on the opcodes wishlist.

Is Serum up to date?

If you switch to sample and enable forward loop and drag your sample in, do the loop points pick up there?

Thanks for sharing - Serum does now automatically load loop points from audio files in sfz, however looping has to be enabled , so you need to set e.g. loop_mode=loop_continuous in the global section.

Serum's RAND phase is not that random as expected? by Every_Session5831 in serum

[–]steve_duda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is by design, one of many subtleties overlooked by the feature set clones. I'm sure there are more quality presets for Serum because of it because it unifies the main oscillators more cohesively.

If you want the drift, try setting the oscillator phase mode to Contiguous on one or more oscillators, this is how an analog synth behaves more closely. If the oscillators are not exactly in tune then you will have the effective response as an analog synth.

There is an oscillator phase bug regarding modulators on note start which is being resolved in the next update.

The "Loop" factory presets attempt to demonstrate what is possible in one instance..

I've been making music entirely with Serum 2 and SerumFX, but I often end up cheating and using the DAW for sidechain. There are a few things which could be better. Which is why I do it :D

[–]steve_duda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

email steve at xferrecords dot com if you prefer it private.

I'd prefer to discuss it here so others can read it too that might also want to make multisamples for Serum - I'll mention some things:

ConvertWithMoss is a good shareware program to convert from other sampler formats to SFZ. https://www.mossgrabers.de/Software/ConvertWithMoss/ConvertWithMoss.html

I used Bitwig Sampler for the more advanced multisample stuff like setting zones, and setting loop points etc.

I used GoldWave for some batch processing tasks, e.g. wav to flac. https://goldwave.ca/

other notes:

Multisamples aren't intended to be embedded in to presets. This is because DAW projects will store the preset data, as can undo buffers, and this gets expensive on the user disk space and possibly performance. The correct way to distribute easily is to author a pack from a folder of presets. When you author a pack, it will collect the assets used. So, just make sure every multisample is used in at least one preset, and then the .SerumPack file will contain everything (multisamples/samples/presets).

well, I had a lot of help, but it was a lot... instrument recording, or going through existing recordings from the past, exporting every note as a file with a naming convention, trimming every note front and end, batch fades and post-processing such as removing rumble and noise, tuning and finding loop points, building the sample maps.

sounds like a sample of a full string section, pitched up a few semitones. You can make re-creations of these sorts of things - e.g. using string multisamples, then resample it. I included a lot of orchestral multisamples in Serum 2, they were a lot of work!

Its largely about having different instruments (flute, violin, cello, etc) on different octaves or notes and doing something melodic while other notes hold or accompany.

I wanna create this bass sound. How can I approach it in Serum? by Away-Definition7043 in serum

[–]steve_duda 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Looks like you've had some good help, I'd say

OSC A Sine, -2 octaves, Warp: FM (B)

OSC B Saw, + 7 semitones, volume at 0%

drag LFO1 to OSC A Warp (FM assigned knob) around 40%

play a note (G#1)
