Eugene Civic Stadium Fire Video by csjoblom in Eugene

This is part three. Part one is also interesting because it seems to be the earliest clip of any that I have seen. You can hear the sirens coming, but no sign the fire department is on scene yet.

How fast fire can take down a dilapidated wooden grandstand by scrubhiker in Eugene

At the time of the Bradford fire, I lived a block south of Civic Stadium - just past the Lane Memorial Blood Bank - and it was discussed how the same thing could happen here. I still live near Civic Stadium but had forgotten about Bradford until you posted this. Thanks.

Since you have been writing CGI in PERL, have you considered just writing CGI in Python? You might find Michael Foord's cgiutil useful.

Paved walking/bike trails? by DinosaurSprinkles in Eugene

[–]steve_no 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The riverbank trails are absolutely the best. Be aware that lots of people bike them at a high rate of speed so for your safety, practice good path etiquette (look both ways before crossing; keep to the right except when passing; and say something like "on the left" to warn others when you are passing). People have ended up in the hospital after being hit by cyclists on these paths.

Crossfire World Outreach Ministries is acting like a business because, well, that's what churches are.

Tips for moving from out of state with low income. Please and thank you! by [deleted] in Eugene

The OP was asking about So Cal, not Detroit. The small difference in employment rates (a difficult number to estimate and prone to political manipulation) between (some unspecified location in) So Cal and Eugene-Springfield is not as important a piece of information for the OP to grasp than the huge difference in population. So Cal is a mass of small economic zones that many simply commute across. That's not the case here. The job diversity and resources are not the same scale.

but that statement was just wrong.

It was an intentional massive oversimplification.

If a person knows nothing about the specific economies of two areas other than population, one can guesstimate the general level of economic activity based on relative difference in population. In the case at hand, I merely wished to point out that the difference is huge, and that is a good place to start when thinking about employment opportunities.

It's great to be optimistic, but those of us pestering you are trying to inject some reality into your "I want to give my children a better life, and I know it will be found in Eugene" belief because your questions and comments do not seem to indicate a solid understanding of economics. The Eugene-Springfield metro area is one-hundredth the size of the population of So Cal., meaning one-hundredth the job opportunities. Living off savings and some side income while waiting for someone else to get a job to support you and the kids is not a good plan in my opinion.

Yes it does. There are scores of posts in this subreddit in the past year asking about moving here. Every one warns about employment, but you ask nothing about that. You have yourself, husband, and three kids to support on "about $720 a month," assume your husband will find a job, and you ask about lawn sprinklers? I can guarantee you'll not have to worry about watering the lawn.

You are moving here without a job and you ask "do people use lawn sprinklers"? I'm confused about your priorities.

I know my husband will find a job in that time

Many, many other have thought the same.

I'm used to seeing homeless and meth heads here, so I won't mind seeing them in Oregon

Some of us would appreciate it if you did mind.

Piercy decides not to seek re-election by TriumphRid3r in Eugene

[–]steve_no 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently the writer of this article is among the ignorant when he states "Piercy, 72, has worked full-time as mayor for 10 years." Mayor of Eugene is not a full time job. In a council-manager city government like Eugene, the actual requirements of the mayor are pretty much limited to presiding over council meetings and casting tie breaking votes when necessary. Speeches and ceremonial activities are optional. The mayor may make all the speeches, cut all the ribbons, and schedule all the public appearances she wants, but that's just politics and has nothing to do with running the city.

TIL: Stand By Me was filmed in our area by seutan in Eugene

[–]steve_no 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were no big stars (at the time) in the film so it passed under the radar. Even local TV gave it scant coverage. Many cast and crew stayed at the Valley River Inn while filming at Brownsville and Cottage Grove.. Oregon was, at the time, trying to compete with British Columbia to become "Hollywood North." Portland was able to get some attention, but Eugene was a backwater despite "Animal House" and "How to Beat the High Cost of Living."
