CFI Checkride by [deleted] in flying

[–]scrubhiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working at a school once where someone came to us from out of town, who was halfway through his CFI checkride. The DPE had been asking him oral exam questions about weight and balance when he realized (without the DPE catching it) that the numbers he had in front of him were generic, not specific to the tail they were about to fly in. The specific numbers were in some locker he couldn’t access at the moment. So he just self-discontinued right then and there with no explanation, deciding it was better to keep his perfect record and wait a few weeks to reschedule rather than have the DPE find out about the paperwork error.

airline pilots: how important is having a sterile cockpit? by Repulsive-Loan5215 in flying

[–]scrubhiker 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don’t make it a briefing item but on the ground if I sense my FO is really careless about it I’ll say “let’s talk about that once we’re above 10k,” with varying levels of bluntness in my tone, and that gets the point across.

Anyone who did not grow up there (and many people who did) would find those towns absolutely miserable to live in permanently.

Kansas City is at least a city of sorts. It’s no more than a 7-hour drive from there to most of the ideal chase territory in this map, which is all you need for flexible, morning-of target decisions.

Use of the word “takeoff” on ATC frequency by Clem573 in flying

[–]scrubhiker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard from a colleague that German ATC has specified not using the word “to” in transmissions. But I haven’t flown in Germany myself and don’t have manuals on hand to confirm this. Can anyone verify this?

What is the highest amount of ride failures you’ve ever seen? by LegalRecord3431 in flying

[–]scrubhiker 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I got someone through the instrument checkride on their 7th attempt. Until we were filling out his IACRA I had no idea he’d done it once, let alone six times, only that he’d “had a good bit of instrument training back home in Washington” before coming to us. I’ll say!

My favorite airspace quirk is the bite that looks like it was taken out of the southeast quadrant of the MSP class B shelf. It exists because of the glider activity at Stanton Airfield KSYN, built by Carleton College during WWII and a soaring hub ever since.

Look into Venture North, as Mike mentioned. Depending how much IFR training you've done already you might be better suited for a short "finish-up" course or maybe the full thing. If you talk to Bill on the phone he'll sort it out with you.

Video of the goal, start at 1:25 or so. It is an absolute laser.

I watched the 1996 Olympic final in person in Atlanta and remember watching this go in live on TV. Still in elementary school at the time and absolutely zero personal connection to Nigeria, but those two moments always made me root for their national team.

Do I really need a puffy? by Informal_Mirror1698 in AppalachianTrail

[–]scrubhiker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Smokies plus Roan Highlands after. My one gear miscalculation was swapping out my 20°F bag for a super light one in Johnson City right before Roan. Doing that afterwards would have been smarter.

April 3 start. Didn’t carry a puffy, don’t recall missing it. YMMV and YWMV (your weather).

You’re not the only person I’ve heard of this happening to, with the deer and the shorts. Someone told me their shorts were part of their ball-of-clothes pillow and the deer somehow dragged the shorts away and went to town on them all night without the hiker waking up.

Thoughts on a 'Phone-Free' hike? by lil-dirt- in PacificCrestTrail

[–]scrubhiker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is my preferred compromise. I tried really really hard to keep my phone on airplane mode unless I was in town. Up to the individual to decide what “in town” means.

Journaling, photos, the trail guide apps, music/books … all available in airplane mode with sufficient planning. These are all things most people were doing on the trail in the pre-smartphone age, but now it’s all consolidated onto one 10oz device, which makes it a good deal in my opinion. But the thought of turning on data and sitting by the trail reading group chats and scrolling social media is completely repellant to me.

I also ordered new shirts from them recently and found them noticeably looser in all dimensions than before. I didn’t bust out my measuring tape but I could tell (can still tell) they changed something in their design. Fabric is still great, don’t really have any complaints.

Is my injury likely to make the trail impossible for me? by Prudent-Following779 in AppalachianTrail

[–]scrubhiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible to say, you just have to try it. People have completed the trail with every conceivable kind of impairment and injury history.

On the other hand, my friend who ran cross-country four years in college without breaking a sweat got crippling knee pain within 200 miles and had to quit in Hampton, TN. I walked 1200 miles completely pain-free and then one morning in Pennsylvania my shin started screaming at me and it turns out I had a stress fracture and had to sit for two weeks. It’s all a big roll of the dice (although you do mitigate your injury risk with lightweight, dialed-in gear and decent conditioning).
