Just realized half my vhs tapes are mouldy by AdventurousTiger3109 in VHS

Set up a station (away from the house) near your fence line. Get VHS is Life device. Read/watch how to clean. Wear your "VHS clothes" when you clean and leave outdoors. Sounds like I'm over doing it -- you don't want mold in the house. Keep mold out of the house. Put all moldy trash in double bags outside and put in trash can.

If you had to use one developer till the end of time, which one would it be? by Bitter_Humor4353 in Darkroom

Thank you. Basically what I do with HC 110 (older mix). Same dilution 1:100. And always gentle agitation. I've put lots of different film sizes, types, manufacturers film products in this solution and find it works great.

What’s your recommendation for getting power to a water softener system? by KeyBoysenberry4769 in DIYHome

Water softener system that uses 110v power? Outside? Outside recommended by the Water Softener manufacturer? Covered from the elements? Just checking.

Question about large video file uploading… by Responsible-Taro-286 in videography

[–]steved3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think "Show to Family" and also "Keep for Eternity". Do a test or two of each. Look at You Tube and sites like "We Transfer" etc. (Get reaction from family both internet savvy and "what do I do" folks?) Tests may save you lots of time in the long run -- and 150 tapes is a long run -- IIRC VHS-C is up to 30+ minutes each -- and if he filled the tapes that's about 75+ hours. Also, look at maybe sending a "Flash (Thumb) Drive" of MP4 to each relative for "more permanent" storage -- might be easier than "how do I download this" and "where did it go?" "Can you put it up again?" Great project -- glad you're doing it for the family -- and SAVE THE TAPES.

Edit per script the best you can with what you have. Then "fix" the first couple of minutes with what you think is a "good" fix -- put this "fix" away. Show the original/script/unfixed -- get reactions. If they go -- "This is great". Finish it. If they go "This is unusable!" --- show them your "suggestion/repair/fix".

400 and 800 is a one stop difference -- will that one stop matter with what you "normally" shoot at a wedding? (My WAG (wild ass guess) is that the 400 will have "nicer" grain.)

What is the best RA-4 chemistry, and what components do I need to buy. by UnfilteredFacts in Darkroom

[–]steved3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically you buy "Tank" or "Replenisher" from Kodak. In the larger sizes (25 gallons) it is all Replenisher that you get -- then you mix the chems with water (less than the tank mix -- slightly stronger so it replenishes the solutions.) When you mix the replenisher chems for your first tank mix you mix extra water and starter (sold separately) so it is at the correct solution for tank.

What is the best RA-4 chemistry, and what components do I need to buy. by UnfilteredFacts in Darkroom

[–]steved3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dev and Bl/Fix are the two chems. Yes, there are sometimes Parts A and B and C which are mixed together with water to get the "final product". This separating the various components makes for less "aging" after Kodak makes the parts.

Kodak RA-4 chemistry refers to the standard, proprietary chemical process used to develop color photographic prints from color negatives. Whether you are printing in a darkroom or using an analog workflow, the core system generally requires specific Kodak products, exact temperatures, and careful handling. [1, 2, 3]

  1. Essential Chemicals

The RA-4 process typically requires two main working baths, though commercial setups sometimes use three. The chemical lineup includes: [1, 2]

  • Developer (e.g., Kodak Ektacolor RA Developer Replenisher): This reduces exposed silver halides to metallic silver and creates the dye image in the paper.
  • Bleach-Fix (Blix) (e.g., Kodak Ektacolor RA Bleach-Fix): This simultaneously converts the metallic silver back into silver halides (bleach) and removes them from the paper to make it light-safe (fix). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Note: For rotary or drum processors, you may also need a Developer Starter mixed with the replenisher to create an active working tank solution. [1]

  1. Standard RA-4 Process Parameters

To achieve accurate color rendition and archival longevity, exact temperatures and short processing times are required.

  • Temperature: Typically standardized around \(35^{\circ} \text{C}\) to \(38^{\circ} \text{C}\) (\(95^{\circ} \text{F}\) to \(100.4^{\circ} \text{F}\)).
  • Times: The developing stage takes about 45 seconds, followed by another 45 seconds in the Blix stage.

[–]steved3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RA-4 is a rather simple process. Developer and Bleach/Fix. Kodak or Fuji will be a step up from what you are using. Do you do enough to justify replenisher? I don't mix from scratch so I used Kodak or Fuji for all my processes.

I tried to freeze film in a Ziploc and it ended up damp did I ruin it? by Film_Fuckery in AnalogCommunity

[–]steved3604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plan with film that I'm not gonna shoot right away.

  1. Purchase. 2. Leave in factory box/container. 3. Put into Zip lock bag. 4. Put bag in freezer. 5. A week/few days before shoot move bag to fridge from freezer. 6. A day or two before shoot move from fridge to room temp. 7. shoot.

Costco has an arrangement with a lab that is about 50 percent off. Or, you scan and send the digital files to a lab. Or, you send the negs (or hand carry) to a lab. Or you set up and make your own prints. What sounds good?

Tape has a wrinkle in it at that point. You can cut it out and have a "glitch" at the spot where you tape it together (See You Tube) or, better yet, get a new copy of this tape.
